Well, there is one place to land to take care of all that, and that's on a dusty old moon in front of a planet that no one wants to go to. On this moon, you'll find a civilization that looks a lot like one's stepped into a wild west movie, hardened cowpolk and mutant horses and all. Will you become a vigilante, hunting bounties and stopping gangs from doing their dirty work? Will you go exploring planetside, with a cowboy hat and a stalk of wheat in your mouth to complete the look? Good luck with that; there is no wheat. This town ain't big enough for all you flooters, but make it so! For the ratings!

Oh, she was one? That kinda explains it - they've got the healing factor and the strength. [He'd flex his muscles, but that would give him away too easily.] Though you'd think they'd pick up a weapon if they wanted to blend in.

It's something everyone from my world can do, don't worry about it.

She didn't want to blend in, she wanted to fucking wrestle dinosaurs. And she did. And won. Bare-handed. For fun. And that was before she was a vampire.

[She is so fucking salty about that, and it shows.]

[Now that earns him an eyebrow raise. He can't blame Nightingale for being salty - he'd be too, and he's not even jealous of this kid.]

That's... uh, that's some life goal. She wouldn't get far where I am, dinosaurs've kinda been extinct too long.

[He doesn't want to dwell on the vampire thing long, but he is curious--] So vampires were an open secret where you're from?

Well... Where I'm from, vampires are monsters that just get killed on sight. An undead, demon-type monster, most of them from a different plane. The kind of vampire that used to be a person was something new in the last interdimensional shithole I was in, and... I dunno, she never acted like it was secret? But we were team, so none of us had secrets.

[He deflates, slightly - a soulless monster doomed to death. That seemed more than a little appropriate.]

Most people freak out when they hear that vampires exist. We had some back home, along with werewolves and witches and ghosts and spirit mediums [oh my!] but...

If you ask me, it's harder keeping that stuff under wraps for so long.

[She shrugs lightly.]

I was the one who fed her half the time, so...

I've fought actual, proper demons before, ones way higher-level than I am. Vampires aren't worth freaking out over. The kind that used to be people don't stop being people just because they get resurrected wrong, so it's not like it's a big deal.

[Most vampires aren't him, so it shouldn't surprise him that Nightingale volunteered. It shouldn't, and yet - he flinched a little at the thought.]

I guess not. I wish everyone thought that way - like, we had vampires back home. A lot of my friends were vampires, or werewolves, or witches, or something "not human," and the fear in people was hard to deal with.

[He shrugs uncomfortably.] This is kind of my first foray in interdimensional life, so it's a lot to get over.

... Why would 'not human' be a problem? My best friends back home were Beast Tribe, an elf, and a merwoman.

[More like her only friends, but let's not get into that right now.]

Well, I get freaking out that something that's supposed to be a monster is actually a person, but still.

Means you're more open-minded than the bigots I grew up with. My dad's best friend was an elf - well, kind of.

His past life was an elf, but point is, magic and supernatural stuff wasn't common, and when it popped up, people tried to keep it under wraps.

[He shrugs.] I like the way you think, though.

[She shrugs, but she's got a small smile now. She officially likes you, even if your world is weird as fuck.]

Magic was pretty common where I'm from. The only people who can't use it are the merfolk. But I'm two worlds removed from home right now, and one of the nicest people I've ever met was a dragon in the last interdimensional shithole I was in. The way I see it, I'm pretty sure the only things that are always evil across every world are gods. Might as well keep an open mind for everything else, right?

I guess so.

[He flinches a bit at the idea of gods being evil - because frankly, he's got a solid relationship with his - but he can't exactly call her out on it either.]

Supernatural stuff seems more common around the Fleet period, but maybe I'm noticing it more because it wasn't a Thing back home.

[Let her regale you with the tales of her world's gods, Stefan. Or her crush's world's gods. Or the previous game's gods.]

That's probably it... I can't really imagine what it's like to live without magic.

Whereas I couldn't really imagine life with it.

[He's thought about it, sometimes, upon realizing that he's descended from one of the most powerful warlocks in existence - but it's never been his reality.] Can't say I mind it much, though. Healing magic makes my job easier - and when you've got monsters to fight, a little of it goes a long way.

Well, when it comes from a decent healer, anyway.

What's your job?

I'm a medic on the Paisley. [First mate too, but he keeps forgetting he has a title.] Before the Fleet came and nabbed me, I was studying to be a doctor.

I also worked at a church for a long time, but that's not really... related to healing people.

[Literally, at least.]

Oh... That's pretty cool. Do you have any healing magic, then?

What's a church?

[She sounds completely serious about that last one.]

Nope. Sure wish I did, though.

[You know what, that is not the strangest question he's gotten, so he stares at her for a couple of seconds before trying to think of a clear-cut way to explain it...] A church is a place of worship. On Earth, they were also places for the community to get together and organize things.

Depending on your faith, you'd call your worship place something different. So you've got churches, synagogues, masjids, temples... a whole hodge-podge of things, really.

I can help with that if you need it, but my healing magic is pretty damn weak.

... Temples? Like the ancient ruins?

[He has to pass, sadly; vampirism isn't compatible with any kind of magic.]

Only the old ones, but those're more museums and tourist attractions than places of worship.

[She couldn't fault thatn if she knew. When Bluebird first turned into a vampire, Nightingale had tried to just spam all the healing magic she had... Which ended up hurting her worse, with her status as an undead. It was unpleasant all around. Still, she doesn't know about Stefan, so instead she just lets it go awkwardly, focusing on the other part.]

So... Your world still has gods, then.

[He shrugs, a bit awkwardly.]

No one really knows. If we have gods - or a God, they've been MIA for a very long time.

I think we've got one, but He's pretty off-hands and lets people do their own thing.

... Okay, that's a new one. What does he do, then?

[Sorry, Stefan, she's from a JRPG world. Whoever heard of a god that wasn't a final boss?]

He answers prayers, mostly. [Wow, this is a good question he'd never given much thought to. Stefan keeps forgetting people have gods who actively intefere in their lives.] Indirectly punishes people if they're not quite on the right path...

But mostly, He created angels and jinn. Angels watch over us, while jinn are kind of like other world's ghosts? They can interact with the human world, but not too many people can see them.

Um...

[Okay that's. weird. So... It punishes people, and it created monsters? If it's creating ghosts, it's smiting people then turning their ghosts into its servants? So it's bad after all, right?]

Okay, I don't think I understand, but if it's not evil, I'm probably not going to...

[It's confusing, and he's actually one of the better people to ask about this.]

Nah, not evil. I'd classify God as more "lawful neutral." He has rules set out that He wants people to follow, but it's up to you to decide whether you'll follow them or not.

He's kinda got a bet going on with the Devil, and that's mostly what I mean by indirect punishment. You follow the Devil, and crappy stuff happens along the way...

[sigh] I could teach a whole class on this, really.
