[ She tilts her head slightly, though it isn't terribly easy to tell. A bit amused: ]

Were it and I at war?

[rebella]

No, I wouldn't say something so dramatic.

( It's said as a jest, and it's meant as one too - Ella wouldn't think of the world in terms of martial applications. that's not what's been important in her lifetime of experiences. this is just friendly banter, really. )

More that the two of you have been involved in a very intense moment of silent regard that reminds me of a staring contest.

[ She's much quicker to think of things as conflicts; that's her own area of comfort, in a way. ]

I see...no, I've only never seen a bird quite like this before. Can it even fly?

( Ella turns her head to regard the ostrich, making a noise of consideration in the back of her throat. )

I don't think they can. Those wings wouldn't support a body that large, and there's no top to these enclosures, or chains binding their legs, or even clipped feathers on their wings. It's strange to think of birds who don't look as if they were ever meant to fly. I've never seen anything like it before either.

That does seem odd, doesn't it...a bird that can't fly. Is it even a bird, anymore?

[ A bit pensive, but thinking about birds is much easier than...probably anything else involving space. ]

...at least they do have their uses.

( space is weird and sometimes you sleep a month and wake up and are still in space, who even knows )

Is a bird only defined by its flight? They still have wings, and feathers. They walk like smaller birds do, and they sound much like them as well. I don't think the concept of a bird is so narrow as to say they couldn't be part of the whole of the bird kingdom... just from a different part of it. I'd love to see what the place they came from is like, to have bred such an animal in the first place.

( then again she also thinks centaurs - who have no intelligence - are pretty, so. she may have a warped point of view. )

They're mostly used for meat here, aren't they? That's the impression I have from walking through the... market, if that's what it's called.

People seem to consider beings with wings angels, as well. There's a great deal of room for a variety of judgments.

They could be birds, though.

[ Almost a bit sad-- even if it doesn't make sense. ]

The shops make it seem like they have a good many uses, doesn't it. Whether or not it tastes good...is another story.

[nah, he doesn't mind. he's happy, she's... okay, and everything's good. he just stands within conversational distance, looking at the bird that's trying to stare down Emblica...]

Oh, yeah. The guy over there were saying they can break bones.

They'll peck you pretty bad, too.

[ All's well here in birdland. The ostrich fluffs up a bit before finding something else to do with its life. ]

Interesting...if they can't fly, they must be able to make up for it somehow, right? Otherwise, they'd likely be extinct by now.

[ She wants to see what these weird tallbirds can do......... ]

It's true. Their bones must be very dense. They look ridiculous... Were you having a staring contest?

No, I was watching it, and then it came over here...I must seem a bit confusing to it.

I wonder if it thinks you're a predator... [he continues watching the bird... tilting his head a little in the direction that it walks...] But if they're raised in captivity, they might not even know what predators are...

Whoever owns them uses them for food. Even if they don't understand that fact, they do have predators..

Likely nothing, they seem...content where they are.

Even so... dumb, living animals tend to react badly to death.

This looks like more of a predator than one like them. Maybe they liked that.
