Gumball Wishes and Taxicab Dreams

[On today's episode of the Drift Fleet:

The cargo holds are full of mysterious crates! The crews are filling beyond capacity with new faces! Official alerts are informing the passengers that they are signed to contracts that they've never agreed to! They are docking at the dazzling FS Starlight, but are flat broke!

What are they going to do!? Stay tuned to find out!

My senses are going haywire from everyone here.

[ with a slight huff -- so, agreed. nothing but unsavory types, for the most part. but she pauses at haruka's question, and immediately steps aside to make room. ]

Sure, if I can come with you.

[ where're you heading haruka ]

...Don't let me throw off your plans. [ Nowhere. That she wants to admit anywhere Atroma might be listening, at least.

...she wouldn't put their finding a way to gain access to security footage past them, okay. Even if all the accounts are frozen for some reason. ]

I don't really have any plans except avoiding the casino.

[ something tells her that she's probably not welcome there anymore. though her brow furrows slightly, at haruka's pause, and she tilts her head a little.

hm. ]

But backup is never a bad thing, in alleys like this. You never know who might be lurking around.

[ Haruka snorts. ] You've grown up crooked.

[ She does not sound....entirely upset about this, however. You always had that uh. Unpredictable spunk. To you. She moves to start slipping further into the alley. ] Don't slow me down.

They were the ones who started it.

[ pointedly -- which is true. rei only started cheating when the card sharks and the machines proved themselves to be rigged.

but haruka, having given her blessing, immediately has rei stealing into the alleyway behind her, only continuing once she's caught up, her tone quiet. ]

And I don't slow anyone down.

[ Haruka just laughs at that. She says that to all the cute little kittens who follow her around. Don't worry about it.

Once they're both in this alley, however, she'll be looking around every time they reach a door or a cross-street. Where is it... ]

[ rei's hands dip into the pockets of her coat, her fingers brushing against her transformation wand. you never know what you're going to get into, when you're following around haruka -- and she's felt several strong presences aboard this station. so... better safe than sorry.

but rei is impatient, and it only takes a few minutes of watching haruka glance at doors before she speaks up -- ]

What are you looking for?

Ssh. [ There's some more people up ahead. Haruka's hand is in her own pocket now. They are the subtlest soldiers. It is them. ]

[ she immediately falls silent at that, stilling immediately. her eyes flicker to haruka's hand in her pocket, and she slowly withdraws her own transformation wand. just in case.

mars and uranus are many things, but subtle? definitely not one of them.

the individuals ahead look to be the typical unsavory type, with some form of weaponry tucked underneath their jackets. smugglers, probably, thieves. the usual. they haven't noticed the girls yet, but they hardly look to be practiced soldiers. ]

[ Then in that case there will be no transforming until and unless it proves necessary. Haruka keeps walking like she owns the place but avoids eye contact, hugging the wall. Not going to disturb you folks. Just heading on past...

...with her impeccable rich-young-man haircut, but whatever, those are just details, right...? Maybe styles are different this side of space. ]

[ rei is a lot less ... well, amazing, at swaggering into places like she owns them. she has presence, certainly, and her time in adstringendum has only strengthened her no-nonsense approach to skeevy men.

it's as rei passes them that the men seem to take notice of her -- eyeing haruka, because who's this man with her? -- and immediately speak out: Hey! Aren't you the girl who attacked our carrier? What the hell's wrong with you?

and she pauses before rolling her eyes, shoving her hands deeper into her pockets. ]

Maybe if he kept his hands to himself, he'd still be conscious.

We're not looking for trouble.

[ Says Haruka, while staring down the bridge of her nose at the men. Her eyes narrow slightly, both daring and forbidding them to try anything. It's not a pleasant expression. ]

[ there's a shuffling of the guard, and one of the men responds "then why are you on our turf?" some seem intimidated by haruka, and some don't. no one seems very intimidated by rei, who apparently doesn't look at all threatening in comparison. ]

Isn't it a free city?

[ with a slight scowl ]

We're just passing through. Step aside.

'Scuse us.

[ And screw all this posturing - it gets them nowhere. Haruka moves to shoulder past the group. Stalemates are stupid. They waste everyone's time. ]

[ the first man haruka shoulders past doesn't seem to mind (or, rather, he's not that invested), but the second grabs her arm to spin her around. who the hell do you think you are?!

another man grabs at rei's arm, and she immediately yanks her arm backwards, instinctive. ]

What is wrong with all of you? Don't make me take your arm off -- !

[ Haruka spins, all right - with her opposite fist already clenched and moving for a swift blow to the solar plexus. Her expression doesn't even change. Seems like she won't be getting where she's going on this particular outing. They're about to make too much of a fuss.

Her eyes flick to Rei. Everything okay there, too? ]

[ rei, meanwhile, has yanked her arm upward -- and when the man who has her wrist refuses to let go, she immediately slams her elbow into his gut, using her size to her advantage as she slams into him to knock him off balance. and once she has her hand free, she immediately throws another punch to the man's side, to prove her point. ]

Back off --

[ Either Rei really has been through quite a lot during those years she managed to gain on Haruka, or Haruka hasn't been paying enough attention to Sailor Mars. Regardless, her own opponent folds like an accordion, which leaves Haruka free to glance at any additional would-be assailants (as if to say "you're not really going to try, are you?") and also to speak up to Rei. ] You good?

[ She doesn't get involved in what doesn't concern her unless it can't be helped. This is how respect works in Haruka Land. ]

[ it's hard to really pass time in adstringendum without constant training -- there had been a lot of fights, and a lot of events that took away her powers, which led her to have to become stronger. it's certainly led to some upgrades in strength, but she's still rei.

which means she stlil has a mouth: ]

I'm fine -- Really?! You can't just let us pass by, you have to try and assault us, because we're women -- ?!

[ to rei's credit, the man she's suitably knocked down for the count now looks terrified of a short thin priestess, and the rest of the would-be attackers are looking at haruka like she's officially dangerous.

rei huffs before dusting off her shirt, turning to haruka with a frown. ]

I'm ready when you are.

[ Haruka sniffs one last time before continuing on her way. Not only did that waste time, it raised a fuss. They may have to call this expedition off now.

As she leaves the alley, she can dimly hear one of the guys asking another, "...both women?"

Whatever. ]

[ rei almost whips back around at that, but if haruka doesn't care enough to bother, then far be it for rei to be offended. and she shakes out her right hand, annoyed. ]

What idiots.

[ under her breath, as she follows after haruka

hopefully no one else heard that ]

[ Nope, they're in the clear! ...From that group, anyway. Haruka's currently checking to see whether they've caught anyone else's attention after the scuffle. ] We might be better off trying again later.

[ -- oh, right, and rei blinks before looking up at haruka. ]

What were you trying to do, anyway?

[ Given that she nearly took Rei along for the ride, there's no telling her it doesn't concern her anymore, is there. Haruka stifles a sigh. ] Something managed to trap us here, right? I wanted to see if the authorities knew anything about Atroma.

[ And by "see" she means "break into security", because Soldier of the Outer Soldier System. Whatev. ]
