Oh yeah, they're super nice. And I think I lucked out? What are your crewmates like?

[and yesss he takes that glass and immediately sips some from it, like he hasn't already had a few.]

Mmm, thanks.

Oh, they're an all right group. All of them are pretty capable, which is all I could ask for. [They can sip this stuff. Hmm... she's here to get drunk, not take care of an infant, but next time she sees the kid maybe she'll bother him to let her examine him. Who know if he's sexually active, or what itchy, seeping surprises he might be spreading if he is.]

Petted any more ostriches lately?

Ha! No way.

[and he's here for the same reason, so sitting here sipping nicely is not what he'd planned on either.

he's also not very good at sipping in general. he's very quickly taking larger pulls from his glass than he maybe should. it's probably not going to be long before he starts to get a little antsy.]

I don't have great luck with animals. Once was enough.

Wasn't it fun though? It's good for you try a new thing once in a while!

[She'll keep his glass, and her own, topped up.]

I guess! It still would have been better if they were smaller, though.

[and yeah that bottle probably isn't going to last terribly long. and he's already a little twitchy, can't sit totally still in his seat. for now, just moving back and forth between leaning forward on the table and slouching back.]

I like trying new things that can't kick my teeth in.

Aww, there was a fence right there, kiddo. No way it could've got to you.

[In contrast to Nel she seems to have stilled. She knows to grab rest where she can find it, is good at that sometimes and not so much at others; the alcohol makes her better at it. Means she can settle.]

[and Nel has never mastered the in-between gears of life. he either guns the engines or slams the breaks. no one should ever let him drive for real. he's glancing out at the rest of the bar now, every once in a while, even though there's nothing there to see. no dancing, no shady folks to elbow up to.

at least this means that his attention always comes back to the table, without something shinier to pull it away for long.]

I bet they could have broken that fence if they really wanted. I've seen gargoyles do it. You just can't tell what big animals can do if they try.

What's a gargoyle, kiddo?

[Just a steady banked coal in comparison to his flickering light. She's observing him more than anything else. Wondering if he'll attempt to come onto her at some point during these proceedings and thinking about how to deal with that.]

[his brain is still scanning, bouncing around, searching for something to spend this energy on. he wants to play.

so, once the contents of that bottle get lower and he runs out of other places to search, it's pretty likely that he'll eventually focus on the person in front of him.]

Oh, man. You don't have them where you're from? They're these big, horrible creatures... kind of made of stone, I guess. People train them and keep them, but they're really dangerous.

We don't have those. [They have some other really dangerous things, she supposes. But no gargoyles.] We have deer, ducks, horses... normal things. You know what all those are, right?

Those things, yeah. Nothing like the giant deer from that one planet, and those tall birds from the stations, though. Just... little normal things.

Mostly little birds, cats and dogs, stuff like that.

[whoa, pausing in drinking to really think and chat for a minute. not that it will last long, but still.]

[He doesn't need to hear about titans, so she'll refrain from talking about them.]

What's the place where you're from like? Are you from the countryside? The city?

[he can't help but laugh at that.]

...That's always going to be a weird question to me.

There really isn't any countryside. It's just a big giant city. Everyone stays inside the walls.

[She laughs too, absentmindedly, but she's focusing more now.]

Is that so? Why do they stay stuck in there, huh?

[she can focus, while he unfocuses and drinks.]

It's super-dangerous outside. It's all big deadly wilderness, and there's like... big monsters and stuff.

Oh, yeah? [Lightly] What kind of monsters?

I guess it depends on who you believe. Some people say there's giants and gods out there, or just really huge versions of regular animals. Like drakes as big as houses.

And some people say that it's just the trees that will kill you, or just all the types of creatures that aren't allowed in the city.

Giants, huh? [Amused. Of course that means more to her than she knows.]

So how do they keep all of you safe? Is there a wall?

Oh, yeah. A big giant wall around everything, and then there's this, like... barrier thing over that. And they have all the gates guarded and watched and everything.

[Sounds like home.]

What do you mean, a barrier?

It's like a shell, but you can see through it. It's either, like... electricity or arcana or something.

Who made your wall, kiddo?

Oh, I don't know.

I never thought about it.

Do you know what it's made of?

...Energy?

[it really is his best guess.]
