Telepath, actually. And she said I tended to... 'fling my thoughts everywhere'. I'm still not sure what that even means besides that she could hear everything in my head.

I think it just means we're not as good at controlling our thoughts and shielding them from others than telepaths are.

I just think it means merfolk are terrible at explaining that.

Well do keep in mind, it's another sense to them. If you had to describe smelling to a species who had never smelled anything before, it'd be very difficult to explain why their food was too overwhelming to eat or why you like a particular flower so much.

That's true, but... Still, wouldn't being able to read someone's mind at least make it a little easier to explain things to them?

Perhaps. Depends how her mind reading works, I suppose.

Pretty sure the way it worked was "however was the most inconvenient for me".

They do have a way of doing that, don't they? To tell the truth I like it sometimes though. It is nice to not have to explain how I am feeling, to just have her know.

... Yeah. I... know how that feels. Even without telepathy, with people who just understand you. It's a good feeling.

It is. It's a feeling I miss a lot here.

... What was this friend of yours like?

Deanna is the most wonderful friend anyone could have. She's compassionate, intelligent, funny - [Beverly laughs a little.] she does wonderful impressions. Somehow she always knows exactly what to say, what I need to hear. There are few people I trust more than her.

She sounds amazing... You must miss her a lot.

I do.

I really do. But - I wouldn't wish for her to be stuck here either.

Yeah... I miss my friends, too, but not enough to want them to get the involuntary brain surgery here.

At least there are good people here. I don't regret meeting them either.
