Nice to meet you. [Common courtesy feels better on her tongue than small talk. She tilts her head. It wouldn't hurt to press further. Most people really enjoy talking about where they lived before.] What do you mean, not exactly? What's different?

Uh, well ...

[ It's always complicated to explain this, but she'll try. ] The place I come from is called Fire Country. It's totally landlocked, unlike Japan, which I heard is an island?

But the language, the food, and a lot of the clothes and other cultural things are pretty similar, so I end up getting mistaken for Japanese.

[It's not exactly the most creative name she's heard, but she just raises her eyebrows briefly, though they're mostly hidden under her mass of bangs. She gestures towards her own costume.]

So would you call this a yukata where you're from, too?

A yukata is still a yukata, ramen is still ramen, so on and so forth.

[ She looks a little amused. ]

Mostly the government and the country names are different.
