[ It could be either, honestly, or imported, but it still tastes better than anything he's had aboard their ships so he'll be happy with it. ]

They sound delicious. I've always preferred apples, myself. There is nothing better than a good, fresh apple pie with a proper buttery crust.

I'm sure you could find something that'll remind you of it, if not be the same. Did you bring a little purse to hide some in?

I did, but I'm not sure it will fit much.

[She laughs, disbelieving that he isn't reprimanding her.]

Are you condoning my act of theft, Kirk?

[personal profile] universal_charm 2016-05-09 03:43 am (UTC)(link)

They put them out for us to eat at our whim. I don't think it's stealing if something is freely given, do you? Besides, it's a better use of the food than it getting thrown out at the end of the night.

moonofmylife: (wait i'm the rookie)

[personal profile] moonofmylife 2016-05-16 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
They would throw out perfectly good food? Why?

[Marking that down on her list of things that are Not Okay. What if they had poor folk here that needed to eat? That's just plain horrible.]
universal_charm: (Default)

[personal profile] universal_charm 2016-05-16 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
Well, no one wants to eat it, and this isn't exactly a place of residence. Many food laws require that after food has sat out for so long or gone uneaten, it has to be disposed of because it is considered no longer safe to eat.

[ He shrugged. ]

I don't know their practices here, honestly.

[personal profile] moonofmylife 2016-05-16 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
There are laws about food in your home?

[That is the dumbest thing she has ever heard. The only smart law is don't poison your customers, really.]

How is it not safe? It just.... is. It's food, isn't it?

[Someone thinks all this modern stuff she's learning about food is a little weird.]

Yes if it's no longer edible it wouldn't exactly taste good but still...

Well, yes, of course.

And now, it's not. Food spoils and can go bad. Take for instance those little things -

[ He points at what seem to be like shrimp to him, but he had no idea what their real name was. They sat in a chilled bowl. ]

Some things like seafood need to be kept cool in order to remain fresh. They have to served at certain temperatures to avoid making anyone sick. It's the same for foods that need to be cooked - like meat. People who serve food and make a living off it - restaurants and such - have to meet certain standards in their food preparation. Such preparation kills any bacteria that might be in the meat, and avoids spreading harmful diseases.

Companies that make food also have to disclose the ingredients so that people can make choices about their diets, and in many cases avoid certain things they might be allergic to.

[ Food can be complicated Danny! At least, you know, if it's your job to serve it - or if you wanted to avoid getting salmonella. ]

If food is rotting or not edible, you shouldn't eat it. You run the risk of contracting diseases.

You're worried about food killing you.... there are so much worse things out there.

[She shakes her head, disbelieving. Sure, food can kill a man. Illness can kill him too, but a blade or poison could probably do the job quicker.]

Though, I suppose it's better than going back to the Caprine sick, if I eat food that's properly taken care of.

[personal profile] universal_charm 2016-05-16 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it's not a great worry - but it is one. And while yes, there are worse things, preventing a disease is much easier than curing it.

[ Many diseases had been mostly weeded out due to proper food preparation, or at the least controlled. Bacteria were a resistant sort. ]

Trust me, food poisoning is not fun. The body is a marvelous thing, but sometimes it tries just a bit to hard.

[personal profile] moonofmylife 2016-05-16 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
No, I can't imagine it is. No more fun than being sea sick or anything else like it.

[The more she's hearing the more she's learning that people in the future are crazy obsessed about disease....]
universal_charm: (Look Back)

[personal profile] universal_charm 2016-05-16 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
[ Well, you know, it kills people? Like, whole swaths of people. Wiped out entire populations even. ]

Well, considering being sea sick won't kill you but a disease can... yeah, not very fun.

[ And just imagine how many more there are out in the universe. He's had so many booster shots Danny. He's sure Bones takes some sort of sadistic pleasure in administering them. ]

[personal profile] moonofmylife 2016-05-16 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
[Wow Kirk you really know how to woo a girl. Talking about foodborne diseases.]

So you... store everything, then? Or throw it away. To keep people from being sick.

[Hmm. Interesting.]

Should we be worried about how well prepared the food here is?

[She eyes the shrimp-like food too, wary of it.]
universal_charm: (Default)

[personal profile] universal_charm 2016-05-16 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
[ Well, you know, things go there sometimes. You were the one who looked shocked, all right? ]

More or less, yes.

[ He glanced at the buffet laid out and chuckled. ]

This looks just fine. I wouldn't worry about their food preparation skills.

[ He lowered his voice to a conspiratorial whisper. ]

And if you get those lemon cakes into the fridge in time, they'll keep for longer.
moonofmylife: (let me get this straight)

[personal profile] moonofmylife 2016-05-16 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
[She whispers back, looking up at him with a small smile.]

Perhaps we could smuggle more than that and have an entire feast to ourselves.

[It would be nice to have some companionship, truthfully. He was a strange man but if he was willing to be her co-conspirator in a fun game like that, she wouldn't hate it.]

That dress didn't happen to come with a purse, did it?

[personal profile] moonofmylife 2016-05-16 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
[As it happens-!! She holds it up, smiling proudly.]

Funny you should ask that.
universal_charm: (Flirty Smile)

[personal profile] universal_charm 2016-05-18 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
[ He grins and motions to the buffet table with its bounty of food - and napkins. ]

Then by all means. It is rude, after all, to look in a lady's purse.
