Just because they don't carry weapons doesn't mean they aren't able to defend themselves. And who says they are all weaponless?

Dagger doesn't amount to much if someone's aiming at you from across a room.

But they have that awful - what is it called, "kick"? To them. A weapon shouldn't do that to its owner. It's bad enough someone else is trying to knock you down in a fight. And ordinarily I have a shield, but it's a bit much to lug to parties like these.

Could modify for you; you're not used to a kick, is all. Any weapon can turn on its owner if its not practiced. Needs adjustments. Could get you something small; peashooter, maybe one of the guns with no kick. Future technology, hnn -- provides weapons without it.
