It's as much a part of me as anything else.

[ He shrugs. The programming aside, nothing steels your natural ability to lie quite like being tortured. ]

A lot of your life was founded on lies. That doesn't make you a liar. You are a product of what happened. And it defines you, but it doesn't make you a part of the system.

You've never struck me as a liar.

Then I guess I'm doing my job.

[ Thankfully, he doesn't feel like he has to lie too much in the fleet. But lord, is he capable of it. ]

What is your job?

If the mission called for it. Most didn't.

[ Ah. To his credit, he doesn't look away. ]

Your missions were very detailed.

If they needed to be.

[ Most consisted of target details, locations, and orders there there would be no witnesses. As if it needed saying. ]

What's your mission now, Winter?

I don't have one.

. . . Would you like one?

I don't kn-- [ He does know. Jim would be upset with him if he resorted to that again. ]

[ Softly. ]

I can't. [ God, part of him still wants to, though. ]

[ He exhales, a quiet sigh. The drive and the belief, all tangled together until there's no end. Erik lost his memories, so he had the chance to explore a possibility of him being something different.

Winter never got that luxury. ]

You'll break my heart that way.

I don't want to do that.

[ Disappointing Charles at this point would be like a blow to the face. ]

[ He smiles, rueful. ]

[ Cheater. Charles has to know that, too. ]

Hope I didn't completely ruin your afternoon.

[ He motions to Charles' notes and the fluff slugs. ]

[ He shakes his head. ]

Not at all. I enjoy talking with you. And I'm glad you're comfortable enough with me to do it.

[ Well, he's a super downer, so you can't blame him for assuming. ]

[ He smiles. ]

Then we're on the same page.

I'll let you get back to it. [ A pause. ] Do you need anything?

[ He shakes his head, bemused. ]

I'm fine, really. Go enjoy yourself.

We're not on the ships anymore. That's as good as it gets.

[ He offers Charles a brief smile. ]

Who knows? It might get even better.

[ His expression brightens at the smile though. ]

It's a possibility. I guess we'll find out.
