[ He feels a little self-conscious. ]

I'm impressed you remembered.

[grandstanding]

I think I picked it up from one of your memories. I can't recall exactly which one. [Just one of those bits of information that had floated through at some point or another, during their many shared experiences.] I don't believe you ever told me.

[axiomed]

[ He nods in understanding. ]

That can happen. Things slip by when we're connected.

[grandstanding]

They do. [To punctuate the statement, he reaches to grasp Charles's hand under the water.]

[axiomed]

[ He clasps it warmly. Tendrils of affection and candor slip through. ]

My very considerate partner.

[grandstanding]

I try to be. [He doesn't always succeed, but he tries. Leaning forward, he kisses Charles lightly.]

[axiomed]

[ He kisses back greedily, heady from the heat and the sentiment of celebrating his birthday. ]

[grandstanding]

[Amusement filters through, along with pleasure. After a while, he pulls apart. It's a good thing they're already hot and bothered from the water.]

In any case, I've let Hank know.

[axiomed]

[ He nods. He should invite Moira . . . but that seems like a recipe for disaster. He'll do something private between the two of them later. ]

[grandstanding]

[Erik doesn't bother to mention that Hank is going to ask Moira anyway. Consider that his surprise for the day.]

I came up here with Raven last week, actually.

[axiomed]

[ Aww. ]

Oh? I'm glad you two are spending more time with each other.

[grandstanding]

It was an accidental meeting. It wasn't... bad, though. [There's so much still bound up in his relationship with Raven, that it's hard to describe just what their time together is like. He goes distant, looking out over the mountainside.]

[axiomed]

[ He nods, a vague understanding. ]

If it helps, our meetings are still like that. Somewhere in between. I trust her but I don't trust myself around her.

[grandstanding]

[He nods, curling his fingers around Charles's again.]

It's... been a long time.

[axiomed]

[ Charles hums, rubbing Erik's knuckles subconsciously. ]

We've come a long way.

[grandstanding]

[That's true, but what is their destination? Erik doesn't have one in mind, and it still irks him at times.]

Further than most, certainly. [In a literal sense, and spiritual. Recollection sparks in him, vague memories of their fights, their losses, their gains.]

[axiomed]

I wonder sometimes . . . about our other selves. Everything I hear sounds depressing.

[grandstanding]

Do you hear it often? [Most who talk to Erik don't reference his other selves again after their first meeting. He doesn't mind; in fact, he prefers it.] You can tell them to stop, you know.

[axiomed]

[ He shakes his head. ]

Not all that often. Most of it I heard from the start. Mystique has told me a little bit more about her world and the state of affairs there to help me with ours.

[grandstanding]

[Forewarned is forearmed. It was what prompted Kitty to tell Erik about Apocalypse and the warning from Leto, he's certain. How much use the information will be is anyone's guess. Some of their realities were quite different, but so much remains the same...]

Anything in particular?

[axiomed]

[ He hesitates before nodding. ]

She gave me some details about a man who wants to head a Mutant Registration Act.

[grandstanding]

[It sends a chill through him, seizing onto one of his eternal fears. A mutant registration act. This was the very future they were warned about, the concept Erik had argued with Charles about on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. A brief flicker of that time, playing chess in the early dawn and talking about the inevitability of human nature, passes through their physical contact.]

It happens everywhere. No matter the reality.

[axiomed]

[ There's a faint murmur of agreement. ]

Having a name helps. I can keep an eye on them.

[grandstanding]

[It's this comment that reminds Erik that Charles isn't quite the same naive young man he used to be, always arguing for peace above any kind of rationality. No, Charles understands things now that he would have refused to see before. He hasn't become the kind of hardened cynic that Erik is - Erik will always be much farther down that road than Charles can ever go - but he understands. And it fills Erik anew with respect and affection, to know that they have edged closer to a middle ground than he would ever have thought possible back in 1963.

He nods sharply. He'll get the name from Charles later, once they leave this place.]

[ His lips twitch slightly at Erik's reaction. It's a little hard not to grin a little. He knows the person he appears to be at times. ]
