Shops

[Recognizing one of her so called students as she made her way around the shops, Mystique headed her way towards her.] Hermione. [She called out, several long items wrapped up and tucked under one of her arms as she approached the young girl.]

Mystique! [ Quick to turn, Hermione steps forward and offers her arms without hesitation, her smile softening from the initial delight as she tilts her head. ] Do you need any help?

I'm fine, thank you. [Though appreciating the offer.] Although it does involve you. I had several items commissioned, they aren't the most ideal options but I think they will work well for practice. [She shifted the weight and drew back the cover enough to show the hilts of two swords. Giving one a tug to get it free Mystique exposed it to show they were full wooden swords.] Maybe a slight adjustment to the handle to make them more comfortable to use and gain a better grip, but a good starting step.

Oh, really? [ She steps over to have a closer look, and there's no hiding the bright smile that crosses her face, especially when she realises just what they are. She'd talked to Erik about swords, of course, but she'd never really thought that she might be able to get some fashioned, even if she had asked Gendry. Now, seeing the wooden hilts and the shapes of them... It all seems real, and she feels a bubble of excitement. ] They look amazing! I mean, they're not our real swords, but given how limited our resources are...

Yes, [That word was drawn out into a sigh, a touch of distaste behind it that was echoed in her features.] This planet is a little limiting in its resources, it would seem, however productive enough for our requirements.

I have also commissioned several different swords, more akin to those used in Kendo, designed for a two hand hold, as well as a couple of daggers to be used in combination with a one handed sword.

I did speak to a blacksmith earlier, but he said there wasn't much he could do with the metal available on the planet. Maybe on the next one? [ She does sound a little hopeful, at least. It would be nice to have some actual weapons to practice with and she already feels as though she's too out of practice - she needs to make sure she doesn't forget what the masters at Treun taught her before she goes home.

But Mystique... To say she was prepared was an understatement. ]
I'm used to having daggers and knives with me, if that helps? I've never used two-handed weapons before - would you be able to teach me that, too?

Knives are easier to conceal than a sword, so I certainly suggest practice on those alone as well as using them with a sword. Provided you can handle using two weapons it has a certain advantage that not many expect, it also allows you to step in closer to your opponent, which most do not expect in a sword fight.

If you want to learn a two hand then we can certainly work on that as well. It is quite a different format to what we've been working on, but still not a bad set of skills to have if it is the only type of weapon you can get your hands on.

A lot of my experience with knives is because a friend of mine kept giving me them and making sure I used them. [ Mako just kept putting knives in her hand or sending her them for Christmas or her birthday, and eventually she realised that she really ought to learn how to use them properly otherwise she'd just have a dozen knives and nothing to do with them. ]

I think it would be useful to learn. I was taught duelling and swordwork because I got caught up in a duel and had no idea how to handle myself - learning to protect myself in more than one way seems logical.

Interesting friend you have there. [If only her's were so nice as to send her weapons. Or to even have friends.] A wise choice then, to be prepared for a possible next time. I had been considering storing the swords away in the gym, however considering there is a risk of them being damage there by others I believe giving you one of each will work better. That way you can practice your stance and strikes in your own time.

You have no idea. [ She had a lot of interesting friends. Most of them wanted to see her prepared and defended, and it had gotten to the extremes at times - but other times they'd been the ones to protect her. It was a lovely, awkward balance. ] I could enchant something with a lock if you wanted to keep them close? Otherwise I don't mind taking them myself - whichever is easier for you, since they're yours.

I think that can be held off until we get the metal versions, or something that could be considered more lethal. [Although a solid strike with the Kendo swords could also do that. Then again she could also snap the wooden blade and use the sharp edge of it to create a more effective weapon, but no need to go into that quite yet.] I'm happy to either let you take them now, or pick them up at our next training.
brainiest: (there she goes again)

[personal profile] brainiest 2016-07-28 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
You're right. The wooden one's aren't too dangerous, but if someone accidentally found themselves grabbing onto a metal one then all kinds of terrible things might happen. [ She's seen people messing around and flinging their swords here and there... It could get ugly. ] I can probably fit them in my bag, if you'd like? [ And she holds out her small purple messenger bag... That definitely doesn't seem big enough for anything. ]

[A glance to the bag as Hermione mentioned it and... yeah, that wasn't going to work.] Short of it being along the lines of Mary Poppins' bag, [Oh look, she can do pop culture jokes... if only a couple of decades old.] Or you are capable to altering mass at will, I think the second option might work out better right now. [Mystique moving to conceal the hilts of the blades again in their wrappings.] Will you be at your lesson this week? I understand if you get caught up with exploring the planet. [Understand but maybe not approve of it.]
brainiest: (is it gone)

[personal profile] brainiest 2016-07-30 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Hermione blinks before she looks down, fighting her smile. ] Actually, it's just like Mary Poppins' bag. It's charmed so it can fit things far, far bigger than it inside - you'd be surprised how helpful it's been. [ But she relents, letting the bag close and dropping it back down to her side before she nods her head. ] Of course I'll be at my lessons. The planet is lovely and all but I don't want to stop learning. That's just ridiculous.

I can imagine. [It would be incredibly handy. Mystique's own ability to carry items was very limited, although it taught her to adapt and work with what she could. As a shapeshifter the idea of carrying a bag or anything bulky that would interfere with her powers was pointless. She limited herself to 'pockets' in her clothing, just enough to store a few items, typically weapons.

A sharp nod of her head at the girl's answer, Mystique voiced her approval.]
Good, I'm glad to see your dedication. [It was far better than others she had worked with in the past, it was why she never really bothered to tutor the Brotherhood boys. They were a lost cause.] I shall see you at our normal time then.
