Oh, I thought I'd do English literature.

Is that different from just plain literature?

Sort of. It's a different culture of writing after all.

But I thought English was a language, yes?

[axiomed]

It is. But only a certain group of people use that language. There are hundreds of languages around the world, all centered around the country's idiosyncrasies and cultures. As such, the term "English" literature usually means European or American based, two countries that primarily use that language.

Oh, I know what European and American mean, I think. [she frowns a bit] There is not one language everyone speaks, then? Like Common?

No, not even close.

Goodness. Then how do you speak to one another?

[axiomed]

You could hire a translator.

Erik can speak quite a few languages, I believe.

That seems so strange . . . my village had people who could not speak Common, but most villages like mine were like that, since not many of them deal with the rest of the world. I learned Common because my parents' spoke it.

But the other languages I know I learned out of convenience, not necessity.

There are too many languages in my world for anyone to know them all competently.

[dryly] If someone can speak every language, then they are using magic to do it.

I could. But I'd be cheating.

I'm touched, but the fact that it's cheating still stands.

That is like saying magic is cheating, and - well, I suppose it is, but it is not a permanent thing.
