[Sorry Max, we can't be companionable edgelords loners today. There are a lot of telling facts about his encounter with Misty, and his actions during and thereafter. She knows it got rough. She wants to clarify for herself, perhaps.

So she doesn't come closer, but her expression remains placid, curling around the instrument in her hands. Truly, she isn't here to pick a fight.]

You shot a woman in the markets some days ago.

[She may as well have been discussing the weather, with all the emotion she adds to that.]

[He predicted hearing something like this. He leans back a little, hand still on his weapon. Not gripping it with aim to draw it, but just for the sake of comfort. It's clear by his posture that he's begrudgingly expecting to be hurt by someone for the incident, though he's not sure if that's from Makie or elsewhere.]

Something happened then, yeah.

[He glances her up and down. He couldn't tell her stake or dedication to this.]

I'm not in the interest of picking fights when there's nothing to gain.

[There's a faint ghost of amusement in her expression. Mostly because Max has a laser pistol, and she's reasonably sure that even the very fastest of swordsmen won't match that for speed. She's unperturbed by his hand on the weapon, because there's precaution and then there's antagonism and she excels at telling the difference.]

You didn't kill her. You didn't shoot to kill. [Or this would be a different conversation entirely.] I'd merely like to know if this is going to be a habit.

[He's not gonna lie to her. It's how he works.]

[Max huffs, and that's about how the tone of the conversation is into eternity, am I right.

He leans back against the tree trunk.]

Could have not worried at all if she let me leave in the first place.

[She doesn't sound accusatory tbh. A picture is forming here and she can see pretty much how things went down, but Misty wouldn't antagonise him without reason, even if it was ill-advised antagonism. So, genuine curiosity. Help a gal out.]

I pushed away someone who tried to grab me.

[It's not the best situation, but they shouldn't have touched him.

He doesn't give a damn if it's their way of life; it doesn't mesh with his own.]

... I didn't hurt anyone.

But I understand. Thank you for being honest. Do you hold a grudge?

[He looks entirely annoyed by her correction, but he lets it go well enough. He did hurt her, after all, but he's not about to be put a spotlight on because he did it. She was threatening him first. He's hurt people for less, even if it was purely on rabid instinct.]

You should ask her that, not me.

[She's seems like an emotional person, if her concern for a stranger is any guess.]

[What a childish response. But hey, it's in keeping with 90% of other men she knows, so Makie's response is to...not really give a response at all. Surprise. She just watches him another long moment.

It's all she needed to know. She can save her breath on anything else. But eventualy, courtesy will move her to ask.]

[He assumes she just means physically — that's really what counts, for most people.]

[He's had a ton of those, anyway. But he shrugs abortively.]

I'll stay away from the villages for the rest of the time. Keep everyone comfortable.

[Not a surprising answer. She inclines her head at the statement. If he's camping and cooking and talking lucidly days after the fact, the concussion is healing without incident. And really, she needed to make sure there wouldn't be a repeat performance. That's all.

Max is a man who prefers his time alone. She can respect that in spades.]
