At the risk for earning a reputation as a party planner, I have a thing for everyone to attend again. Don't worry, lots of other people are helping pull it together. It's going to be on New Year's Eve, but the real event is the countdown to Winn's birthday which is also on the first. It's going to be in a club we rented out for this in the red shift district. Starts around seven-ish. Ends when you pass out?

It's kind of a surprise maybe? At least the part where it's for his birthday. And if you don't know Winn but you still want to come that's fine too. You can trade a gift for Winn for a free drink at the bar. Otherwise, bring some money. Cake's on us though.

[Birthday/New Year's Party]
[The space is well decorated and so glittered you can probably tell Wrath was part of the team putting this together. Lots of Winn's friends came out to help whether it was getting decorations up, managing food, music, or chipping in to buy out the space and a drink for anyone bringing a gift. Not to mention drinks for the birthday boy all night.

There's a table for presents and another one with a spread of openly available food though the bar has appetizers you can buy too. There's a big cake at one end because of course there is and some punch that didn't start the night spiked at least. There's space for dancing and a karaoke machine set up on a small raised platform for those who want to try their hand at entertainment.

The night really kicks off when Winn walks in and instead of a balloon drop there's a fluffy blue stuffed bear drop. Feel free to take one of those home. There are a lot.

When midnight comes closer some people will file out to one of the observation areas to get a good view of the nebula for the big countdown. Bring your own person to kiss!

[He laughs and doesn't bother correcting her. He does let her pull him closer and then does his best to spin them both around to show off though.]

So do New Yorkers. [ she grins. ] Well, the cool ones do.

[ the spin catches her (delightfully) off-guard. the world is a brief blur of colour, and then she's back to hitting the beats with her easy, comfortable dance moves. although a wealth of technical dance training keeps most of her motions smooth and elegant, modern music isn't much of a precise art. mistakes are made. she owns them -- cheerily. ]

[He keeps up even though he isn't exactly sober himself and with no yellow sun around he has none of the powers that came with it on earth right now. On the plus side, that means he can afford to get drunk now. He's not there yet though which is probably a good thing if he wants to dance to impress at all. Some of his moves may be a little unusual not being from earth and all, but he did have some time to get used to modern Earth dancing so it's definitely compatible.]

Kate the cool New Yorker? [She smiles.] That's the city you're from?

[ladybro]

Mmhm. [ a toss of her head -- a shimmy of her shoulders. ] New York. Oh, God, she's a beauty of a city. There's nowhere like it.

[ one of the most beautiful sights (she figures) is when she finishes up a night of dedicated partying somewhere in a penthouse overlooking the rest of manhattan. its grids and lights form a hectic and live-wire piece of art. no matter what the hour. let her talk too long, and she'll start waxing poetic about when which boroughs first got electric lights. ]

What makes it so special? [He's not really that interested in the city, but Kate looks happy talking about it and that's a good look on anyone.]

[ladybro]

It doesn't sleep. [ gosh! mon-el! how can she count the ways? ] It's got art galleries and trendy food hubs and Broadway. [ she grabs him by his wrists and executes a delighted little spin. ] And the bagels! Oh my God, the bagels.

I didn't think cities were known for their sleeping habits. [More kidding than being overly literal here.......but maybe 3% wondering if they actually sleep. He won't worry about it so much he can't spin though, smiling along with her.]

What's a bagel? [Sorry, this one is real. He still had so much food to learn.]

[ladybro]

[ she stops herself just short of pinching his handsome cheek. oh, poor little lost boy. ]

Round bread with a hole in the middle, buddy. But they are so much more than the sum of their parts. Cream cheese! A bit of smoked salmon! Mmn.

Like a donut? [He's had those.] I don't remember fish, but there were sprinkles.

Bagels are kinda like the donut's more savory and breakfast-y cousin. Not that I'm condemning you if you wanna have donuts for breakfast, I guess. That is a valid life choice.

[ y'all should never learn about earth from her. ]

[It's more like he just needs to learn about food from anyone but Kara. Have you seen her with a box of donuts?]

I like pancakes for breakfast. [Is he confused about how pancakes work or did he crack the code?] I hope we can still be friends.

[ladybro]

[ cue a delighted gasp as she draws nearer -- dancing, of course. nothing hinky. though the mild wine buzz helps. ]

I love pancakes.

[Smiling and not at all bothered by the nearer. In fact, he uses this as an opportunity to dip her. Dipping is universal.] We should get pancakes sometime. [Does that sound like a come on since it's a breakfast food?]

[ladybro]

[ dipping is absolutely universal. kate does her part -- not daring to go slack in his arms and prove herself a shoddy dancer. after all, she's got a handful of years spent learning ballet with one of the best instructors manhattan's power-parents could afford. ]

We should absolutely get pancakes sometime -- [ if it sounds like a come-on she either doesn't care or doesn't assume. ] Not least of all because it's been way too long since I've had pancakes. Protein gel in the morning is just a sad, sad, sad state of affairs.

I think we have a plan. [Even if it's lacking details like when and where.

And back up and twirling around with her mostly along with the music but a little just for fun. Tonight has been the most legitimately fun night he's had since ending up here even if he's been entertaining himself to the best of his ability.]

[ so they dance. kate was never shy to begin with but each measure of music invites a fresh familiarity. she shares her personal space; she infringes a bit on his. locking her fingers loosely against the back of his neck. it's all friendly. ]

So you know about pancakes. But not bagels. [ how funny. how kinda endearing, too. ] I wonder what else you're missing out on.

[Friendly is good. Heck, friendly is great! If his arms curl a little tighter around her waist then that's pretty friendly too, right?]

I'm a complicated guy. [Who just hadn't been on earth that long yet and a lot of his life wasn't very earth-typical with the DEO and alien bar.] You should quiz me on Thanksgiving.

[ladybro]

[ totally friendly. and as long as they're both on the same friendly page, she doesn't fuss so much about making room for the holy ghost between them. ]

Quiz you? [ kate's head tilts. her laughter crinkles her nose. ] I mean -- I don't know about you, but I don't usually talk turkeys while I'm two-stepping. But I confess, you've got me curious.

Well, if you have dance conversation rules about it I would not want you to break those on my account. [Smiling.]

Oh, I'm not all that bothered by flexing the rules. [ and she speaks with sincerity -- not some sorta coquettish pageantry. ] Luckily, though, no such rules exist. What's your hangup with Thanksgiving, dude?

[He laughs.] It's just an earth tradition I was there for. One of the things I have the hang of. You wouldn't think it would matter back in space, but most of you are still from earth.

[ladybro]

[ yep, sometimes -- like just now -- talking with him is like an echo of noh-varr. it both frustrates and fascinates her. ]

We're floating through the stars, but we're still clinging to what we know. It's gotta be annoying to still be confronted with it all. [ ... ] Or thrilling. I think I kinda envy your ability to experience stuff for the first time.

You make me sound a little like a child. I'm sure you're experiencing things for the first time too. We're both dancing with each other for the first time.

[ladybro]

[ oh! charming. it catches her unawares, and it shows in her grin. ]

Believe-you-me, I definitely don't think you're anything like a child. [ she hems and haws and clarifies: ] But I've...danced with non-earthlings before. Seeing all these things that are old hat to me through fresh eyes? [ whether those eyes are his or another alien's? ] It's neat.
