holding her means he knows for a fact she's still here. ]
I don't know. [ he decides to give honesty a shot. ]

You're probably right. She meant a lot to you, didn't she?

She does. [ present tense, he insists on it, emphasizes it. she may be gone from the fleet, but her influence on him lingers, it'll last as long as his memories. it may be a lot easier and healthier to let go of the people he loves and lost - he may go crazy from the pain if he doesn't - but he stubbornly refuses to do it. he wants to keep them by his side.
a small, fond, longing smile creeps its way onto his face. ] I couldn't be sad around her. Just couldn't do it. [ even when he was hurting so badly after sascha's attack, she cheered him up and helped him plan kitty's party, all without needing to talk about it. he needs someone like that. ]

She gives him a soft kiss on the cheek in silent apology for the past tense.]
I know what you mean. [Though sometimes it came from a good place of Pinkie lightening the mood and sometimes it was just that Kitty fought harder to act pleasant, holding back anything darker or sadder that she might have been feeling because it felt inappropriate around Pinkie.]
She was unexpected. In a good way.

[ and he can't help a sad little bark of laughter - it's so ridiculous to say, even now. and he misses her and it hurts. ]
I never would've expected her.

[ he'll always remember that time his girlfriend and his friend the pink talking pony threw a pizza party for him. he was weak and disoriented from his coma and had so many questions and suspicions rolling around in his head - but like every other painful moment he spent in pinkie's presence, at that moment he didn't care.
there was pizza, made especially for him by a person and a pony he loves, there were good friends, and he was happy.
that's not going to happen, wherever they stop next. not even if they have pizza. ]

he feels embarrassed, even though he figures what he's done is probably a pretty natural thing to do under the circumstances. ]
I was just...watching the first time we met.

You can watch it if you want. [ he just feels kind of self conscious about it, though he is proud of how he responded to her - he was so instantly delighted by her. being a little drunk helped. ]

I'm okay. You don't have to [ pity me ] worry so much. I know you miss them too.

[Softer.] He was the last of the mutants who were here when I arrived.
[She's sad Pinkie and Cheese are gone too, but she didn't have quite the same connection Winn had. And the were so impossible it almost makes sense to her that they're gone. They belong back in pony world if that's really what happens when people disappear.]

his grip on her tightens. ]

Wish I'd gotten to know him, sounds like my kinda guy. [ he cared about kitty and the version of him that was here cared about jim - that's enough common ground for winn to like him. and in a tiny way it's comforting that the last thing she heard - was a friend. ]

[ why didn't he make an effort to get to know him while he could? why can't he figure out of this? he can't lose kitty. does he take a terrible chance she'll resent him for for the rest of their lives - or, her, if it doesn't pay off?
he has to do something. she can't be the next to go.
he can hear the seconds tick by, each louder than its predecessor. he's going to lose his mind if he doesn't figure out something soon. ]

[She doesn't resent Winn. Not for not meeting Remy. And definitely not for not getting them out of this yet. That's an impossible task. But she would like to meet any of his important people that she hasn't and introduce him to any he might be missing. That would be something.]
no subject
[ he can feel his heart just breaking in his chest. or is his chest caving in around it? whatever it is, it hurts. even if both of them keep remaining, how much more of this can they take? this constant fear of loss is driving him insane. ]

I'm happier than I've ever been in my life. There are still hard days, but I have you. I have so many friends and our crews. We have these moments even if they never feel like enough.
