I know. I will not be caged again. Not ever.

[And, because he knows that tone so well... ]

What about you?

[She hesitates a little, but it's only fair when he's been honest with her. Scrubbing her hands a little more on her pants, she nods.]

It was the same, sort of. Ran away, because it was... wrong, what I was doing. I didn't know, until it was done. I was eight.

I can understand that. It took...getting a little freedom to realise how wrong my life had been.
hellofist: (many uses)

[Again she doesn't speak right away, but it's for a different reason this time. There's so much there that matches and it's making her think back on her first weeks in Gotham, her first months with Batman. Everything had been so blank about her then, just a body moving and fighting as it took to the newness of having a choice. It took a long time to stop wanting to die for the things she had done, and now she has a chance to ask if that's normal.

She's never met anyone else who would understand this, but Fenris might. Maybe he will understand that it's easier to keep taking orders even once you're free, to follow until you know who you are. Maybe, in the way she had her cowl, he had something to cling to to make himself feel right.

But she doesn't know how to ask that question. She doesn't know how to frame any of that the right way, and he's still basically a stranger even if she does consider him a friend. She can only get close to the right question.]

Are you happier now?

[He'd know that only too well. When you've taken order your entire life, autonomy is difficult. It's a vast chasm, which you have no prior experience with. You don't have the life skills needed to make the crossing over it, into what lies on the other side. Freedom? Normalcy? He doesn't know.

He's lucky. He's had the Kirkwall gang to help him. To ease him into a life where he could be his own man, but at the same time give him a shelter from the fresh fear of being free. They gave him things to focus on, missions, things to do. Starting points.

He takes a moment to respond, thinking about his answer.
]

I'm honestly not sure what that is. Perhaps?
