[He polishes off the rabbit and picks at the chicken, suddenly feeling kind of awkward. He should have known Riku wouldn't make this easy, but he didn't expect it to be this difficult.]
I bet you've got more to say than you think you do, but what do I know? [He lifts his eyebrows.] I know you like to dance, and you know how to cook, and that's about it. I guess it's a start.
no subject
why is this so hard? riku hasn't taken more than three bites of his kebabs--he's too concerned with this topic. ]
You don't like saying things plainly, you don't like dancing... you like metaphors, and weird words. [ hm. ]
For what it's worth... I don't know you that well, either, even in the future.
no subject
Correction: I don't dislike dancing... I just kinda have this thing about doing it in public. [It's a little embarrassing, okay?
[He takes another bite of kebab and chews thoughtfully, then shrugs one shoulder.]
Well, I guess that's something we both need to work on, then. [A tilt of his head.] I like ya, Riku, you're the kind of person I'd definitely want watching my back, you know? [He kind of grins then.] Words don't always speak as loudly as actions, sure, but they can be pretty important, too, so if you've got something to say, you can say it to me. Contrary to popular belief, I'm a pretty good listener.
no subject
riku looks at him, surprised. what? he looks away quickly and crosses his arms, kebabs sticking out from in between his fingers like claws. people just put up with him, they don't actually like him... this seems too weird. ]
... alright. I guess I could. [ he looks a little exasperated. ] But I mean it--I don't really have much to say, so... don't be surprised.
no subject
That's fine, too. Relax a little, okay? It's not like I'm gonna be mad if you don't have anything to say, sheesh.
[He puts one of the sticks in his mouth, just nibbling on the end of it, then glances around.]
I wanna find the fruit stand... I know I saw one. What kind'a fruit you got on your islands? You know, I went there once, with Roxas and-- [And? He stops short, then shakes his head. This is weird, it's like there's something on the tip of his tongue and he just can't find the word. Distractedly,] With Roxas.

Paopu fruit, passionfruit, coconuts... papaya, pineapple. [ rubs the back of his neck. ] Mango, too. There's a lot, but those're the ones I know about.
The fruit stand, it's... [ the scent, it's coming from... riku turns twice, to the west and then faintly to the south. ]
It's down that street.
no subject
[He looks a little puzzled as Riku turns in a circle, then arches one eyebrow.]
Did you just use sonar or something?
no subject
[ literally. ]
Those're the paopu. They're so important to the island they have a festival and a legend about them.
no subject
[He starts down the street, still nibbling on the end of that skewer.]
Ooh, a festival? Sounds like fun, we used to have festivals back home sometimes. Usually for like the changing of seasons. What's the legend?
no subject
[ he wraps his other kebab in the parchment it was sold in--he'll eat it later. he's full right now. after tying it off with a bit of string, he puts it in his satchel and follows axel, hands in his pockets and slouch in his spine (as usual). ]
The legend is, if you share a paopu with someone else, your destinies're intertwined. No matter what, you'll be a part of each other's life.
no subject
[He listens as they move down the street, passing vendors selling scarves and clothes and even a blacksmith's shop. He glances over his shoulder.]
No matter what? [He presses his lips together and frowns a little.] That's a nice legend. Wonder if it really works...?
no subject
riku peers up at him. he almost wants to ask if he has anyone in mind, but that feels too personal in the end; he veers away from it. ]
No idea. Before Sora and Kairi could test it out, I opened the door.

[The fruit stand appears! Axel's actually kind of impressed by the offerings: oranges, apples, strawberries, cherries, even pomegranates! He looks really pleased, and glances at Riku.]
Check this out--this stuff actually looks great! I wasn't expecting there to be cherries. [He's brought a bag for this--this is pretty much what he came here for, after all. He's sure he's got enough money to bring at least a dozen oranges back to the ship, and he'll get some cherries and an apple or two, too; he can give the seeds to Asteffiel and maybe they can grow their own stuff. Of course, growing fruit trees takes years, but he's not really thinking about that at the moment.]
You want anything? My treat. [He's feeling generous right now.]
no subject
briefly surprised, riku just. stares, before he actually turns to riku. he gives a light start and steps forwards a little, peering at the selection. ehh... ]
I... I think I'm okay. Are you really gonna eat all of those?
no subject
[A small box of cherries, five apples, and some blueberries later, Axel's bag is full and his wallet is significantly lighter, but he certainly looks pleased. He shoulders the bag and gives it a heft, then regards Riku a moment.]
You need anything else?
no subject
[ it's soft; when axel motions for him to open his palm he does, and he stares at the two strawberries for a second before giving a quiet sigh and shaking his head. ]
I wasn't really that hungry... [ but it's impolite to refuse a gift, so riku eats the strawberries with little fuss, in small bites. ]
I only came down here to dance, so I could get my mind off of... [ his voice falters a little, and he frowns. ] Off of other stuff.
no subject
[Axel looks at him sidelong when he falters, and then makes a 'hmm' sound, mostly to himself. There it is again, that feeling like Riku wants to talk about something, but feels like it's not his place to put the spotlight on himself. Even if it's subconscious, you don't bring something up if you don't actually want to talk about it, right?]
You know what I do when I wanna get my mind off stuff? [A beat of silence, and then his face is very serious.] Nap. [Yup.] Bad day? Take a nap. Pissed off at somebody? Take a nap. Everything looks a little better after a nap, I'm tellin' ya, you should really try it sometime.
no subject
... oh. ]
Hah. I'm not good at staying still.
no subject
[It's an innocent, benign inquiry. He saw the painting supplies, but he's not indicting.]
no subject
Kind of.
no subject
[He takes a deep breath and holds it for a moment, then exhales and tries again. This was almost easier with Roxas before he learned how to string sentences together.]
So whaddaya do, like... landscapes or something?
no subject
I'm not good at those. Usually I just paint the wood I shape. [ a light shrug... ] I already shaped Twilight Town, so I figured I should paint it, too.
no subject
[He watches their feet for a moment, then looks back up, scanning the rows of vendors.]
I haven't really had time for a hobby in a while. Now that I'm here, maybe I should pick one up again. [A hobby besides napping, of course.]
no subject
[ he asked that as he went back into his satchel, taking out something wrapped in a piece of burlap. when he carefully unwrapped it, he held it up for axel to see.
he'd taken the utmost care with making it--it had tiny details, and sanded out edges. the only thing really missing was the paint. ]
Brought it with me--I needed a size comparison for more wood.
no subject
Oh, so you do have a sense of humor. I was starting to wonder. [He shakes his head.] Napping is... a pastime I enjoy, I'll admit, but it's good to have something to do while I'm awake, too. I wonder if I can find a guitar anywhere...? Probably not here; I think all they'd have around here is like... a lute or something.
[He looks down when Riku pulls something out of his satchel, and his face slackens a little when he unwraps it.]
Whoa, hold the walkie, you made this? [He pauses in his steps and reaches for the little carving, then hesitates, asking silent permission before he gingerly takes it in his hands. He turns it around and marvels at the details.] Oh, wow, you've got the ice cream shop and everything, and you totally nailed the clock tower. That's really impressive! [He hands it back carefully.] Where'd you learn how to do something like that, anyway?
