how are you all dealing with the ever-so-educational volcano? have you played around with the visual toggle on those collars yet? aren't they cool? aren't these peasant clothes rad? if you haven't had a decent meal since Abeo, maybe you could afford some of that authentic farm-raised meat they have here. historical!

I bet you're all excited and completely thrilled to be here! who wouldn't be? ...so, make some discoveries, make some friends, and have fun!]

[ There's somebody that will look the same with the modulator on and off; her clothing is similar enough to the clothes here, her overall appearance so average, that there's just that little to change. ]

Are you waiting for something?

[he glances over at the question... and maybe stares a little bit too long at her face.

for one of the rare times here, someone is instantly honing in on the constellation of freckles circling her eye.

...he doesn't say anything about it, however. instead, he eventually shakes his head to answer her question, and then points at his own eye and gestured toward the crowd.

he's watching.]

[ She's not used to being so...intensely stared at when not wearing her mask. And when she is wearing it, it's so much easier to ignore. ]

Are you trying to blend in better?

[mortalcoil]

[he continues to silently answer her questions, but... yeah, he still might be quietly taking note of those freckles. it's not quite as intense of a stare as it was before, but it's still there.

and again he shakes his head, then points to his collar and shows how he's toggling the button back and forth to observe the differences.]

[ Wh-what, you wanna fight??? ]

Is it really that fun?

[mortalcoil]

[no, not fight. maybe just study.

and he hesitates a little... before shrugging. he doesn't know if fun is the right word, but trying to get across the idea of "interesting" without being able to talk--unless he wants to stop and pull out a pencil and paper--would be kind of a pain.]

I guess that's fine too.

[ Shrugs, pretty nonchalant. ]

Mind if I watch with you a bit?

[mortalcoil]

[and despite it being a completely nonchalant question, coming from such a harmless-seeming person... he still hesitates. he's got that quietly-wary look about him, like he's trying to figure out what her ulterior motive might be.

but, after a moment of being unable to think of a rational reason why he should refuse... he finally shrugs a little and scoots over a few inches.

[ She'll just chill here quietly with him for a bit, watching everybody. S'good times. ]

[and he lets her hang out there, busying himself with watching how people react to the lessons and quiz-bots, and how they approach the collars. he notes everyone's modulated and unmodulated appearances. and he does this for as long as he can, before the fact that another sentient being is right next to him finally gets under his skin.

he shifts in place for a moment, before finally turning toward her--he points at her, and then draws what looks like a question mark in the air with a finger.]

[ He wants to know about her... ]

Did I forget to tell you my name? I'm Emblica.

[mortalcoil]

[he nods... and then hesitates when he can't easily complete the exchange of names. it's always a little awkward on a normal day, but running into it while sitting with this kid is somehow worse than usual.

he doubts that she knows sign-language, but he holds up a hand to spell out his name anyway-- C-O-I-L.

at least most of the handshapes look like the letters they're meant to represent, in this case. if she even catches on to what he's trying to do, anyway.]

Your name?

[ She frowns, like she's concentrating. ]

Can you do it again?

[mortalcoil]

[well... repeating himself is still better than him having to write it out. and he won't mind so much if he's making someone use their brain.

so, after only a small hesitation, he runs through the letters again--slowly and clearly.]

[amarant]

[ Watches, carefully. ]

I think I have it now. Coil?

[mortalcoil]

[wow... most people give up, or don't even try.

he doesn't smile, but there is a lightening of expression around his eyes, and he nods. he's maybe a little impressed!

maybe not absolutely everyone in this fleet is a complete idiot.]
