No buying expensive formal clothes.
no subject
'Only an expensive formal crossbow. I'll get busy.'
no subject
You want to get lunch?
[Yeah, invite him to spend money just as he makes this big saving goal...]

[She waves for him to come on, and sets off. She saw taverns with tables set outside... nice to eat a meal under the open air... not that long but they're reaching the district where foods are being hawked again]
no subject
'Food here is pretty good. Maybe we can get ingredients too? Things that keep well...'
no subject
Good idea. There are a lot of supplies we can get here. Useful. [She, for one, is excited to have swords at hand again... even if they're not the blades she's used to.]
no subject
'What were you looking at? Weapons?'
no subject
And then out loud:]
Ah, over here. [And she points to a bustling place with space at one of their long outside tables, with an awning set over the whole thing for shade. It's easy to wade through the hustle and claim a spot. Hange raises a hand for an attendant.]
no subject
'Hard to find something in that style here.'
no subject
Of course. But better than nothing. I need my gear. [And then she sighs... because how is she supposed to get that? She doesn't really have the expertise to recreate the 3DMG's black box.]
no subject
B-O-W is for gear I had at home. Can make... [he hesitates, thinking of how to say it... wobbles his hand a little.] Some of it. Need better pieces from other places. You tell me your parts and I can look for them too.

[...please explain.]

The black box is the controls. We operate switches, but the black box is where it sends controls firing the hooks. I don't know if I can rebuild it.
[And then their food comes. Hange calls to the server and waves a hand, and in a couple moments they're served. She beams and promptly rips apart the bread to begin dipping it.]
no subject
T-E-C-H is too difficult?
no subject
[She sighs, and abruptly changes the subject.] Nice to have meat here. They've been R-A-T-I-O-N-I-N-G at home for years.
no subject
Engineer could build it.
[using whatever sign they came up with for "engineer" to keep it short--probably a wrenching motion.]
no subject
[But no, no. She wants to follow this subject change. She shakes her hand, dunks her bread in her stew, speaks out loud abruptly.]
Listen closely. I'll tell you about some events that took place ten years ago - the worst terrorist attack humanity has suffered in its history.
no subject
why did i say ten years i meant five. FIVE.
About one hundred years ago, humans lived free. Then the titans appeared, and the population from all around fled to live in side the three walls: Wall Maria, Wall Rose, and Wall Sina. It was degrading to live penned up like cattle, but there was no way at that time humans could effectively fight titans - not until we invented 3DMG.
Still, we survived. Humans farmed land inside the walls and raised livestock and hunted, although of course you must be aware of the population pressures we faced, unable to freely expand.
But the status quo continued until five years ago when the most terrible terrorist attack in our history was levied against humanity.
[She takes another drink of beer.]
Listen: each wall has four hero towns. They're built budding off from the main wall... at the cardinal points: north, east, south and west. Titans are attracted to high population density, so the hero towns will be the first ones sacrificed if an attack happens. They have gates allowing the population to pass into the land behind the walls, and also the land outside. It seemed like an attack might never happen, but then the hero town of Shiganshina was attacked by the Colossal Titan. Bigger than any titan ever seen before, it could peer right over the wall... it kicked in the gate leading outside, and then the Armored Titan, with special plates under its skin making it difficult to attack and cut, followed it inside on a headlong charge through the town. It never stopped and the unprepared soldiers couldn't make it falter, until it reached the gate that led to the lands behind Wall Maria, and crashed right through, allowing the titans to descend upon the hero town and into the land behind the first wall. Thousands of humans died in that first week, though the greater number of them reached the safety of Wall Rose. But that wasn't the end.
Because of food shortages a year later, we were forced to purge the population. [Her eyebrows pull down briefly.] It was called a repopulation effort. To send humans to live outside the walls again. One hundred soldiers and about one hundred thousand humans... a fifth of our population... were sent outside the walls with farming tools to attempt to reclaim land. Of course, they were devoured en masse. [Her lips pull back from her teeth in a brief and humorless smile.] Of those humans, one hundred returned from outside to tell of the carnage they saw. But the pressure on our food supplies was relieved.
Anyway, since then we've still had rationing.
[That's it.]
I will pretend I saw five
when she's done telling it, he looks over at her like he's expecting... something else out of it. a moral, a point, maybe.]
Re: I will pretend I saw five
It's not so different from home, here. Well, it is a bit... if we should be in the walls, it should be like this. Look at it, we're even getting meat.
