[It sure is a lovely day actually pretty much indeterminate time period out here in the vast darkness of space, isn't it? I bet everyone's enjoying themselves, getting a chance to get off their dinky little ship and stretch their legs. Even on this shitty, empty little waystation.

[ooc: hi everyone! I thought I'd give this a try and see how the game liked it. What we have here is a mass mingle post. Rather than everyone making a bunch of different posts about landing on the station, everyone is invited to post a parent comment with their character out and about, doing something. Everyone else is invited to look at who's posted, tag them, post their own parent comments, thread jack, tag around and generally have a grand old time! It should hopefully be a nice low-pressure way to do some action tagging with each other.

No, no. I think we'll be here a while, and it sounds like there's other stations further down... wherever we're going.

[he laughs to himself a little. he's funny. gosh, robin. stop being so funny.]

How about you tell me about where you come from?

[amarant]

[ Oh, you. ]

I was living in a town by the sea. It's right at the tip of the island it's on, so it's mostly surrounded by water, but it's up on cliffs. It keeps the buildings safe.

It's kind of like...

[ Kind of forms a hill with her hands. ]

The top of the city is the center, and it just...gets wider as you go lower.

[he copies her gesture while she explains--makes sense to him.]

What does the town look like? Is it pretty?

Some of it is. It isn't as nice, the lower you go. It's noisier, too.

Interesting. It sounds a lot like where I'm from, save for how my town is under the ground...

Interesting! No one would dare to build underground, it's where the gods live.

[ Other worlds are so weird. ]

Mm... [nodding along.] They didn't want to, since monsters live underground... But the surface became uninhabitable. They had no choice.

[amarant]

They didn't move somewhere else?

[ Since...a god only affects some land, so to her, if some surface land is bad, you just pack up and leave. ]

No, no. The whole surface was bad. The whole continent. They literally had no choice but to go down, and they only had a couple of weeks to do it.

[he remembers. his smile lessons, since this is... actually pretty horrible.]

We call that the Third End. To be honest, it's kind of a miracle that humans were able to survive it, let alone make any sort of comeback.

We all are. It was a long time ago, though. I try not to live for ghosts.

[he switches things up a little, leaning forward and propping his chin up on his hand.]

Will you tell me about your Gods?

...it's a sensible way to live.

[ Nods, slowly. ]

The first one that was there when I came to the city was a large serpent. It was far underground, beneath the center of the city. One day, it stopped breathing, and its heart stopped beating. Everyone was worrying, because when a god dies, the land it serves dies too. The water stops running, nothing grows, people lose their magic.

But it turned out the god had been killed, by the one that was growing inside it. It ate its way out, and there was water and plants and magic, but...deicide is a crime. Eating the flesh of a god is a crime. The new god-- it was a large beast with the face of a woman-- got very sick, and so did the land.

[hm... he listens carefully. these gods sound very different than his gods. more like monsters, really. with an even smile:]

Are you sick too?

[amarant]

[ Accurate. ]

Yes, but you won't get sick from being around me.

It's fine. It doesn't scare me.

[and he seems very calm and genuine about that; in a way, he's already kind of sick himself.]

Will that god die, eventually?

[amarant]

[ Nods slowly, it's an appreciative kind of nod, even though her face isn't visible. ]

That's good. I wouldn't want to make you worry.

It will, but not for a long time. Hundreds, maybe thousands, of years.

[it's so funny to him, to watch that animal skull nod up and down...]

That's a shame. I hope it dies faster.

[like that's a... normal thing to hope for...]

The Gods I'm used to are much harder to define, but there were many powerful monsters on my world that sound a lot like what ruined your city. Like the Leviathan.

It would be nice...though I don't know that it would change anything. It wouldn't change enough, certainly.

Where to start? People mostly know them as the scary things deep in the Underground that constantly long for the taste of human flesh. They eat stragglers on the lower levels a lot. Most of them are just dumb animals with claws and teeth, but they can get pretty strong if they live long enough. That's how you get the big ones, and the powerful ones...
