Justice has seen the new arrival around. She hasn't seen him because he's chosen not to allow her to, but sometimes he forgets that he's never revealed himself to many of his crewmates. He feels her staring, and for a moment he's tempted to disappear again, but he keeps himself visible. He can't avoid people forever.

Or he can, but that sounds miserable.

"We have not met." Justice doesn't mean to sound curt, but that's how it comes out as he dips his head in greeting. "You are Lioriley, lab support. I am the security officer."

As usual, he forgets to give his title. Names are such a mortal thing, and he may never get used to how attached they are to them.

She blinks owlishly at that, momentarily confused at the fact that he already knows her name and position aboard the ship. Maybe someone else told him? Definitely a possibility.

Either way, she doesn't seem to take his curtness as an insult or potential offense, and bows her head in greeting. "We have not, and yet you know my name before I know yours." She says with a quiet little laugh as she raises her head again, attempting - if he so allows - to look him in the eyes as she speaks. "'Tis a pleasure to meet you, ser."

"You do not know my name because I do not have one."

Yeah, Justice is never going to tell people that his name is literally Justice. It feels dishonest. But he also doesn't feel quite right telling her to call him Justice, either. He's not sure if he really deserves that title now.

But mortals need something to call him, and 'Justice' is the only moniker he knows.

"Call me Justice." He gives her a short nod in acknowledgment, but he doesn't give her nearly the warm greeting she gives him. He doesn't mean to be rude; he's just awkward. "You can speak to me if you have concerns about the armory or matters of security."

She looks him up and down once more, as if to silently confirm her assumption that he is in fact human. But humans, so far as she knows anyway, always have names. Is he something else, then? Or do people of his world not have names in general? Too many possibilities and she cannot rule out any of them. She doesn't outright ask however — his curt reply does not leave much room for questioning currently. So she just nods, folding her arms over her chest idly.

"Justice, then." She confirms, her smile still present despite his tone. If he doesn't wish to speak to her, she assumes he'll just stop. "I will be sure to do so, though I doubt I will have much use of the armory myself. I am not inclined towards weaponry of any sort - especially that of such advanced technology."

"My world does not have guns either. It is useful to learn how to handle one, and they require less training than a bow."

Justice would normally offer to train her, but he's not sure if he trusts himself to commit to regular contact with a mortal at the moment. Perhaps later, if he can.

"I do not recognize your kind," he says. The way it comes out, it can be taken as incredibly rude, though he only means it as an innocent question. "What are you?"

"I will consider looking into them, perhaps some other time." Or not. She knows how to handle a bow, but that's the extent of her knowledge on weaponry. Even then, she's not inclined to use it much unless she's hunting.

His question does come off as rude, but in her six centuries of life it is hardly the worst thing anyone has said to her. She seems more than happy to answer, too. "So it would seem not many do. I am a Lunari from the land of Kilarria." and to skip ahead, to where she assumes this line of questioning might go: "We are a race born of magic, gifted to us by Spirits that once roamed the northern lands. The magic is the reason I glow as I do." Another common question. She wiggles her fingers slightly as if to emphasize the leylines that curve around them.

"Spirits gave your kind magic? They are different from the spirits in my world, then."

Justice does not want to know what would happen if spirits just handed magic out to mortals when they felt like it. It seems like a disaster waiting to happen, especially since demons could do it too.

"Are you a mage, then?"

"Oh? I know not of spirits of other lands. Then again, I have not thought to ask." Technically, she didn't know a lot about the spirits of her world either. Just that they are the ones that gave the Lunari their magic, and that their secrets should be kept just that. Secrets.

She nods. "I am. What of you?" She has yet to meet another mage, but she won't get her hopes up.

“Most do not know much about spirits.” Whether they can’t learn because they don’t have the resources or they just don’t care. Not that spirits go out of their way to teach mortals about themselves, to be entirely fair.

“I am no mage. I know many in the Fleet, however.” It would be incorrect to say he doesn’t have magic of some sort, but ‘mage’ is a specific word for magic mortals. “None of them are Lunari. They are humans or elves.”

"I cannot speak for others, but I know for certain that the spirits of my world are quite elusive. It makes it difficult to learn much of them." Unfortunate, but she also can't blame them for acting as such. So many were inclined to try and use their knowledge and powers for misdeeds.

She smiles, wholly unsurprised that no others of her kind have arrived — or at least made themselves known. "Race matters not. I am always excited to meet other magic users, though. The magic of other worlds may very well be drastically different from what I am used to."

"In my world, there are many spirits who are fond of spending time with mortals, but most would prefer to be left to their own devices." He'd been one of those for a long time, but so much for that.

"I am certain it is. I have already met many mages whose magic behaves differently than I am used to." The biggest thing being that their magic comes from inside of themselves, rather than the Fade. It's weird to watch someone perform magic and not hear the Fade singing.

She nods her head, silently filing that information away for later. Not that she thinks she'll need it, but it's nice to know little tidbits of knowledge from others.

"How does magic behave where you are from?" She knows of her way; of gathering the power from within her very being and expending it as she sees fit. She knows too the ways of the other races — stealing from other living creatures, simply learning the magic and harnessing it, the list goes on.

"It comes from the Fade, where mortals go to dream and pass through when they die. Mages have the ability to pull power from the Fade and affect their own world with it. Spirits live in the Fade."

At least they do when they aren't pushed through the Veil by blood magic, Justice thinks.
invigorates: (you're the handjob girl right?)

[personal profile] invigorates 2018-02-19 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Lioriley looks absolutely enraptured by the concept. It's so wildly different from her own understanding of magic that she can't help but want to know more, to experience it herself even if she is certain she never will. Not unless they end up in his homeworld somehow.

"Can mages that arrive here still gain access to the Fade? Would it hinder their abilities if they could not?" How unfortunate.

"A mage with no connection to the Fade is Tranquil. They do not dream, have no magic, and they are unable to feel any strong emotions. Their willpower is crippled." It's nightmarish. Justice briefly imagines what it would be like if no one could reach the Fade here, and he shudders. "No. The Fade is further away, but they can still connect to it from here."
invigorates: (Why are you Guts?)

[personal profile] invigorates 2018-03-11 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Lioriley's expression shifts, and she looks visibly disturbed by the notion of Tranquility. Such a word's meaning seems inappropriate given what he says. No magic, no feeling, no dreams. A life she would not care to lead and would surely prefer to die if ever given the choice.

"That is good to hear. I would hate to think anyone here was suffering from being so far removed from it."
