It definitely is. Using your brain is important, or you'll get early dementia.

I'm not a psychiatrist, but I'd bet anything that's not how that works.

[Not that he knows a whole lot about dementia to begin with let alone early dementia.]

That's exactly how it works. If you don't use your brain actively, it goes to waste much faster and much earlier.

[Joseph says with a casual shrug. Although it's definitely an if he gets there by his estimation. Not because he's actually stupid enough to not be able to survive, but the men in his family do have the tendency to die young. He's never actually resigned himself to that and has every intention of hanging onto life as long as he can, but it also doesn't exactly leave him all that compelled to think of the future much either.]

How old are you anyway? You look way too young to be a psychiatrist.

There's no way you finished all that schooling by twenty-three.

School works differently where I come from. We're done with our formal education by twelve and then we work in the field with a teacher after that.

Seriously? That sounds awful.

[Joseph... Well, as can be expected, he didn't have much of a knack for school and didn't like it. At all.]

Why does it sound awful? It's hands-on practice instead of sitting in a classroom all day.

Sure, but when did you have time to just have a life? Pick up a hobby or two?

My family owns a flower shop. Gardening is one of my hobbies. I like shopping, too.

[Her answer catches him off-guard, so he laughs without meaning to. But Joseph quickly puts his hands up again just in case so he has a chance to explain himself.]

Sorry, you just didn't strike me as the type to have hobbies like that.

Gardening makes sense, I guess, but shopping just seems so... So... [He starts rotating a hand in the air, trying to will the right word to come to him, but then he just waves it off. She must know what he means.] I don't know. I'd just expect you to be into reading books or something over shopping.

[He grins.]

It's cute though. I would have never suspected.

And of course I like shopping. What girl doesn't?

I don't know. You're just not like most girls I know is all. They're not as smart. Or am I not allowed to call you that either?
