I've noticed a lot of discussion lately on the ways in which we can re-purpose the Iskaulit, but I am wondering if any thought has been put into organization. The ideas people are sharing are good and I believe they should be pursued, [some more than others if you ask her,] but a mad dash for space and resources won't do anyone any good.

We may also wish to consider leaving some of the ship's space free. Things have been relatively quiet, but we may find ourselves in need in an emergency.

Yes. Maker forbid that anything serious should happen, but we need to consider the possibility.

I definitely agree- you never know when Atroma might decide to have "mass systems failure" as the next dramatic plot twist.

This is why I wanted to have a small clinic or at least a cache of medical supplies on the Iskaulit as well- as a doctor, it's part of my job to think of every angle, including the eventuality of injuries.

That is a wise idea. Each of us should be thinking ahead to the possibility that supplies may become limited or lost. An emergency supply of food to be store might not be such a bad idea as well.

It would be difficult to account for the number of people on the Fleet in that regard, but a little food is better than none at all should the worst come to pass.

I agree, but then we need to get everyone together to discuss how we should organize. Finding a common time and place to meet would be the next step, wouldn't it?

Yes. It would not need to involve everyone in the Fleet, of course, unless they wished to attend.

But individuals looking to make use of the space and captains of each ship, perhaps would be adequate.

Yes, I think so too. Do you think the Iskaulit itself would be an appropriate place to meet? It should help when we discuss the space there.

How much space, though? If the Fleet keeps growing, who knows how many people might need to retreat there?

It's difficult to predict. We should have a minimum reserved, enough for a crew or two--whichever everyone thinks would be best--and see to it that the other spaces may be relatively easy to convert.

I'd vote for two. It's not a small ship, and anyway, if people have lived without these extras for this long, they can handle it for a little while longer.

So, say two crews - twelve people - and supplies for two crews. Backup communications. What else?

It is a possibility. Or Atroma may have a hand in something malfunctioning. [There's also the possibility of disease.] Either way, we should have something in place so that we can keep as many people safe and healthy as we possibly can.

Then I think that's a good idea. [ And because she likes Cassandra, Elize might just follow most of her ideas anyway. ]

I agree there needs to be some fleet-wide discussion and organization, and I am willing to meet with others, but... such things have not always gone over well here. Not that I'm saying we still shouldn't try, of course.

What went wrong in previous attempts?

Several months ago, we were attacked by another fleet of starships - we still don't know who they were or why they were attacking - and afterwards, I made the suggestion to both my own officers and the captain of the Three Twins that perhaps we should have some sort of fleetwide plan in the event of another attack, to help protect those ships without pilots and/or security personnel, and to simply give ourselves a better fighting chance overall. Every ship for itself is not as effective as a coordinated effort among all of us.

[She sighs.]

Only one or two ships were interested, and some people were even downright hostile towards the captain of the Three Twins for suggesting it on the network. I believe they saw it as her trying to take control of the fleet, which was not her - or my - intention at all. Of course, there are different people here now, so maybe I'm worried about nothing. But I thought it only fair for you to know.

I definitely think getting together to brainstorm is what's needed here, but too many speaking up at once and it'll just be white noise. And since it's so difficult to get everyone together in the same time and place, anyway, why not have each ship assign one or two representatives or liaisons on their behalf? It gives the quieter ones a chance to share their ideas without feeling railroaded, too.

I was thinking something along those lines, yes. Captains would need to be present, at the very least. Perhaps one other member or members who wish to make use of the space.

I would never desire a free-for-all discussion. Not that many people need to speak at once.

Pretty sure most people would agree that a safe space for a retreat is sound, at least. Working out extra fortifications shouldn't be difficult.

A wise choice. We have been attacked enough times now that a place of security should be a priority.

I am somewhat surprised that this hasn't been suggested already. I hope it's at least considered a possibility.

If they have any sense, it will be. If not, we can always wrestle some space form them.

Not a bad plan. If you want to assume that Atroma doesn't have just as much of a hand in the Iskaulit's systems, anyway.

Should have a team of engineers go over the ship's systems again, and probably a team of security, too. Do a more thorough search to see if there's anything else nasty waiting for us to find it.

I would have assumed something like that would have already been conducted. You raise a good point.

A group of engineers gave it a basic once-over while some of us were dealing with the former crew. Some more crawled over it the last month while we've been parked seaside.

A third look wouldn't hurt, especially if you pair security and engineering personnel. Or anyone with espionage or military background, who knows what a trap looks like.
