[Steven has some very mixed feelings about waking up in outer space. On one hand, it's space! He's so excited to be in outer space!

But that is dampened a bit by the conflicting feeling. The last time he was being taken to space, he was being captured and it was a Very Bad Thing.

The tiny child paces around uncertainly, trying to look for any sign of friend or foe. At least he doesn't seem to be in a prison cell this time. Maybe this isn't so bad?

When he finds the video feed, he'll prod at it uncertainly, while trying to be brave.]

Hey! Is anyone there?

Um... This is a nice spaceship! I really like it, and I always wanted to go on a space adventure. But I have important things going on back home, so it would be nice to save the space vacation for later!

[Then he frets a little more and looks around uncertainly.]

Un-unless I'm here 'cuz you're one of the guys that wants to do bad things on Earth. If that's it, then... Can we please just talk?

I'm fine; we've only been kidnapped by some powerful being or beings who have a predilection for television shows.

[Pearl, please.] And no, I haven't seen any other Gems here, Homeworld or otherwise.

[He gives a relieved sigh.]

That's a relief. I worried for a moment that - that they got us.

[With the possibility of Homeworld Gems out of the question and Pearl seeming being safe, Steven unwinds a bit and tries to think over what she's said so far.]

So we're stuck here because of some powerful beings. And... they like tv? [At least he's guessing that's what 'predilection' means.]

What's their opinion on Crying Breakfast Friends? [He doesn't want to miss his show.]

I - [she was totally going to go off on another tangent, but you've distracted her]

I...don't know if they are even aware of the existence of Crying Breakfast Friends. [i.e. the weirdest cartoon in the world] But Steven, we don't get to watch television, we're on it.

[for better or for worse. Probably worse.]

On tv?! [He looks around, as if expecting to see a camera crew around.]

So it's like... we're the Crying Breakfast Friends?! Does that mean everyone at home could be watching us?

[He hopes he doesn't look too bad if Connie's watching!]

Well, I haven't seen very much crying yet, but yes. That's about the gist of it.

And I truly doubt it. They seemed to be geared towards another type of audience.

Sooo we were kidnapped for a space tv show. That's weirder than usual!

And it's a different kind of audience... a space audience?

[Being watched by aliens kind of sounds less embarrassing?]

Right. They want us to entertain these people, but all they've given us are platitudes. The small ships aren't very impressive either.

They're not? That stinks... [He says as if just trying to agree with her viewpoint. He's confused because aren't spaceships impressive just by default? Either way, he wants to keep her from getting very unhappy.]

But hey, look at the bright side! We're in space, Pearl, just like you always wanted! Isn't that great?

[otherwise, she probably would've tried to make her escape]

Well, yes. That's true. [wait, is that a trick question] Sort of.

We still have Peridot to take care of. [and somebody might be worried about Garnet and Amethyst]

I know, I know. And Malachite... We've got a lot to take care of at home.

[He nods seriously.]

But we can still appreciate the good about this, right? Just until we find a way to get back home!

We could see what space has to offer us, while we're at it.

[and it hasn't been fifty years yet - which seems to be the upper limit for trips into space for humans.]

[That's Steven's job. And his own smile gets warmer, at the sight of a smile well-earned from bird mom.]

Yeah, that's the spirit! I want to learn more about life up here, and on different planets. I bet that'd be pretty neat! Are there a lot of places to visit up here? [He hopes they don't just stay cooped up in spaceships all the time.]

[honestly, she's not sure if she's taking care of you or if you're taking care of her]

Last month, we were at a planet with quite a few beaches and marine life. We're back in space now, and so far, we've only seen waystations here and there.

[It's okay, he's perfectly fine with it being a back-and-forth. He wondders, maybe that's what Mom had hoped it would be like.]

Ooh! Beaches, huh? It must have reminded you of home! Did you do anything fun there?

And what are those waystations like? Would you say that they're... wayyyy out of sight?

We went underwater on one of the shuttles, but otherwise there was mainly a lot of cleaning up.

[she knows that tone, young man. That's a Joke, isn't it?] For the moment, yes. We come across them periodically, so you'll see them yourself soon enough.

Ooh, you had an underwater adventure? I hope it was a really really nice time! [You know, without any flooding chambers or renegade fusions.

Don't worry, Pearl, Steven will do all the laughing for you at his own Joke.]

Yay, road trip! Or should I say, space road trip? I just know I can't wait to check them out!

[Then he frets a little as he looks at the screen, and then he looks around him.]

But... um... Where exactly are you, Pearl?

I'm on one of the small ships, the Vanquish. The ship you're currently on is the Marsiva. They'll most likely transfer you to a small ship within the week and then I'll be able to see you in person.

Within the week...? [For a moment he looks sad. Maybe a little afraid. Sure, he's been growing up a bit and becoming more independent. But it's weird to imagine life in space without Garnet, Amethyst and Dad. And it's weird to imagine going even that long without seeing Pearl in person, being so used to the convenience of warping.

Not just weird; it's scary.

But Steven puts on a brave face. He knows it can't be easy for Pearl either... being here by herself.]

It... It's really neat being in space, so I'm sure the time will fly by! So, we'll see each other in no time, Pearl.

[oh nooooooo that look on his face]

It's only a week, right? There should be other people on there you can make friends with [nobody here seems inclined to kidnap children, at least] and you can call me on this whenever you want.

[breaking into the Marsiva isn't exactly feasible]

Right! Don't worry about me! [He tries to put on a more reassuring smile.] It looks like there's plenty of nice people around, so I'll be alright, Pearl.

But, what about you? You've made a bunch of new friends, right? [Or at least he hopes. It'd be really sad if she got too lonely without Garnet and Amethyst around.]

[she really has to remind herself she's not supposed to hover anymore (or at least she can't watch him sleep), but this is an extremely different environment! One that may or may not be just as dangerous as the one he's used to. Hm.]

The humans here seem to have a wide range of abilities and extremely conflicting histories. If nothing else, they seem to be very good evidence for the "multiple universe" theory.

[that's not what he was asking, Pearl]

[Steven blinks a little and goes on with nervous politeness.]

That's really nice and all, but the last Dogcopter movie already sold me on believing in alternate universes. [That and he accidentally created an alternate timeline, but it's best not to bring that up again.]

What I really wanna know about is... friends! What kinds have you been making here, Pearl? Come on, no need to be shy!

[she probably doesn't understand Dogcopter either, to be honest]

Well, the humans on the ship aren't too bad. At least one of them seems to be very interested in space.

Ah. And there's somebody else who's almost like a Gem. He has a Mind Stone right here. [and she's pointing at her own gem]

[Steven smiles brightly at the mention of the humans. Pearl and humans, being friends? He's so glad! And he sounds so impressed about this one friend.]

Oooh! A Mind Stone? What's that like? Can he pull all kinds of neat things out of it like you do with your Gem?

[at least the lack of space on the ships precludes the possibility of any fence building, with or without barbed wire.]

I'm not sure about that. But I did think it was interesting that he seemed to view himself and his gem [or stone] as separate beings, to some degree.
