Well, I bought a few drinks earlier, so... [he's either got some money, or recently spent the last of it.]

[She will buy Nel a bottle to share, she has money to spare, but she's not paying for an entire drinking contest with the lil guy, alas.]

Ah, well, I'll buy a bottle.

Okay.

[and he... looks kind of bashful after a minute. he's not entirely heartless with all the mooching he's been doing. he knows.]

Sorry... having to spend money on everything is weird.

[She reaches over to ruffle his hair. Goddamn, but he's young. That's a pretty shitty life to be pressed into when he's so young, so it's not like she's without sympathy either.]

Don't worry about it, kiddo. Whatcha want?

[handouts are always welcomed, but sympathy gets weird. he can sense it in there, so he shakes his head after she ruffles up his hair, and busies with picking his fingers through it to put it back into place.]

Whatever. [he'll drink anything.]

And... man, it was so much easier to get stuff at home.

[see? no need for sympathy. everything was great. he had it easy.]

[She has a lot bigger things to worry about than one unfortunate, broken sex slave, to be honest. Nel's kind of story wouldn't be unheard of in her own home. So she lets it go without further pressing.]

Oh yeah? [Where he knew the ropes, she'd bet it was. She goes to the bar anyway, and gets a bottle. The strawberry flavor isn't that bad. Two glasses come with it.]

I'm not sure they have flavorless here...

[good, just the way he likes it. he can relax, like this.]

Yeah. I didn't need to pay for stuff--it was great. I could just go up to the bar and they'd give me whatever I wanted. Like, whole bottles.

--Oh, is that the pink kind? It's pretty good.

[She picks up the whole mess, bottle under one arm and glasses in her free hands, and makes her way towards one of the booths.]

Oh yeah? Sounds like an interesting arrangement.

[it doesn't dawn on him to ask to help her carry anything.]

Yeah, it was. We never had to buy anything. ...So this is way different.

[Brainwashed, broken, essentially made helpless, and allergic to being pitied, and she supposes to anyone trying to help him. Not that surprising.]

Mmm, I bet.

So you got on the ship before leaving the snow planet after all, huh?

Oh... yeah.

[he hunches up a little in that defensive, potentially false, bashful way he does.]

A guy from my ship came by, and wanted me back on there, so...

It's better that way. [Said with mellow assurance. She has no idea; maybe it isn't true, but there's no point in thinking like that.]

Who's on your crew anyway?

[Vash is a good guy, what can he say?]

A tall guy with spiky blonde hair, and two girls.

[She slips into a booth in the next second. Puts the glasses down, pops the bottle open, pours for both of them.]

You know their names?

[he follows, sits nicely, waits to be served.]

Vash, and uh... [the girls had names, just give him a second.] ...Ino. And Miyuki.

Oh, I've met Vash! He's a nice fella. Goodnatured. [She pushes the drink in his direction. She's met Ino and Miyuki too, they just stood out less to her.]

Are they treating you all right?

Oh yeah, they're super nice. And I think I lucked out? What are your crewmates like?

[and yesss he takes that glass and immediately sips some from it, like he hasn't already had a few.]

Mmm, thanks.

Oh, they're an all right group. All of them are pretty capable, which is all I could ask for. [They can sip this stuff. Hmm... she's here to get drunk, not take care of an infant, but next time she sees the kid maybe she'll bother him to let her examine him. Who know if he's sexually active, or what itchy, seeping surprises he might be spreading if he is.]

Petted any more ostriches lately?

Ha! No way.

[and he's here for the same reason, so sitting here sipping nicely is not what he'd planned on either.

he's also not very good at sipping in general. he's very quickly taking larger pulls from his glass than he maybe should. it's probably not going to be long before he starts to get a little antsy.]

I don't have great luck with animals. Once was enough.

Wasn't it fun though? It's good for you try a new thing once in a while!

[She'll keep his glass, and her own, topped up.]

I guess! It still would have been better if they were smaller, though.

[and yeah that bottle probably isn't going to last terribly long. and he's already a little twitchy, can't sit totally still in his seat. for now, just moving back and forth between leaning forward on the table and slouching back.]

I like trying new things that can't kick my teeth in.

Aww, there was a fence right there, kiddo. No way it could've got to you.

[In contrast to Nel she seems to have stilled. She knows to grab rest where she can find it, is good at that sometimes and not so much at others; the alcohol makes her better at it. Means she can settle.]

[and Nel has never mastered the in-between gears of life. he either guns the engines or slams the breaks. no one should ever let him drive for real. he's glancing out at the rest of the bar now, every once in a while, even though there's nothing there to see. no dancing, no shady folks to elbow up to.

at least this means that his attention always comes back to the table, without something shinier to pull it away for long.]

I bet they could have broken that fence if they really wanted. I've seen gargoyles do it. You just can't tell what big animals can do if they try.

What's a gargoyle, kiddo?

[Just a steady banked coal in comparison to his flickering light. She's observing him more than anything else. Wondering if he'll attempt to come onto her at some point during these proceedings and thinking about how to deal with that.]

[his brain is still scanning, bouncing around, searching for something to spend this energy on. he wants to play.

so, once the contents of that bottle get lower and he runs out of other places to search, it's pretty likely that he'll eventually focus on the person in front of him.]

Oh, man. You don't have them where you're from? They're these big, horrible creatures... kind of made of stone, I guess. People train them and keep them, but they're really dangerous.
