[ He's indulged with Kirk since he got here. Sable . . . is complicated and so is Loki. ]

[He considers this question. Prurient details are simple to give, and something Rogue would be very hurt by. He could spin yarns about the mechanics of the act all day, at any rate. But instead, he offers something much more honest and important.]

I do love her. I don't think I've ever before had sex with a woman I didn't hate on some level.

[Which makes more difference than he'd ever thought possible.]

For you, hate and love are very closely related.

[ Leto can't recall hating anyone. He's never been at that edge. Ghanima did, once when Leto supposedly died. But hate wasn't a Fremen quality. It had no place in the desert. ]

I suppose. [He is a monster, after all. He's keenly aware of this fact.] But I don't want to hurt her. I always wanted to hurt the other ones.

Not physically, mind you. I'm not that sort of monster. I'm not kind enough to settle for destroying someone physically.

It is an odd situation.

[ He didn't have to say it. ]

I was in love with many people, back in Aather. I had to leave them all behind.

[His lips quirk.] I've been informed that not all Loki's are so discerning about that as I. [So it seemed a relevant point.]

What is that like? To be in love with many people, rather than the leaving. [That latter, he knows the measure of.]

True. But I would still know.

[ He pauses. ]

It reminds me that I'm alive enough to still love and love strongly. Even when it hurts, loving is . . . a joy.

[He considers this for a moment.]

For a short time, I might have loved more than my lady. And in so doing, I nearly broke all to pieces. Everyone was quite miserable.

[The corner of his lips twitch.] Perhaps I lack your talent in that area.

You were not meant to hold that much.

[ And he would not recommend it to others. ]

Satisfaction is not in my nature. [He shrugs, faintly.]

I have been told by well-meaning humans that my capacity for love is far greater than I think. But I do seem very good at destroying that which I might love.

[He considers, eyes half closed.]

In Luceti, I died, once. To save the life of a man I might have loved. My lady was most wroth. And well, I suppose, for such a fool I am in thinking to do so.

[He does so like cutting himself with his own words, too, at times.]

Perhaps. But that is not for you to decide. The universe is unfair and only she decides. What matters is whether you felt it was worth it.

[ The universe will never be fair to Leto or his family. The least he can promise is that it'll be fair for the rest of humanity. ]

Whether your capacity for love is great or small, it only matters that it is yours to choose and yours to decide.

I have at times chosen whether or not to hate.

[I want my little brother more than I want my vengeance.]

But were there any choice in the matter of love, I would have been shot of it ere it was even a glimmer. It is a foolish thing and I am not well suited for it.

[ Oh, Loki. Leto can't say he is wrong there. ]

It is your purview.

[It's so refreshing that someone agrees with him for once. Most of the rest of the time it feels like he's being told yes, there is something terribly wrong with you, but it's not the thing you know it to be.]

And yet here I stand, trying so desperately to be good. Perhaps next I shall grow scales and claws and render myself a dragon.

It's something you need to want to be, Loki.

[ Not that Leto was ever good. He's a tyrant waiting to happen, to subjugate and enforce his peace until humanity tires of him. Playing the bad guy so that his example is never repeated. ]

And even then, it is not . . . necessarily the best for you. You should be Loki.

[He smiles crookedly. Because that's what he does when something is funny, and when something hurts.] Loki is a lie, Leto. A castle of air upon a foundation of sand.

So is Leto.

[ His original personality was destroyed when he was born. Only Aather helped him reassert that individuality. And it's threadbare. ]

You still let the castle exist.

[The temptation is there, to reach out for the man again, but he strangles it.]

It is a useful construct, yes?

The power is in telling our own lies, I suppose. Rather than believing the lies others have told us.

I would not know. No one has ever bothered to lie to me.

[ Loki had once urged him to. Not to hurt him, but to protect him. Leto could never do it. ]

[Such raised eyebrows. He certainly has lied to Leto. He lies to everyone but Rogue, out of habit, and because it's fun.]

I shouldn't wish to argue with someone so adorable.

[ He frowns ]

I can see why you might wish to cede from the argument.
