Hey, so, question: On a scale from "wow that's super weird we've never heard of something like that" to "it must be a Wednesday on the Fleet", how common is it to just like, get a bunch of "new" information from home? Which, now that I think about it, is kind of a dumb thing to ask because we have implants that give us job skills training. But I'm just wondering. Uh, in the abstract? Something like that.

Anyway, I'm going to go get some coffee and food because I'm starving. Who knew that sleeping was such hard work?

[ she feels like she can actually... show more emotion to Hank than with Winn or Kitty, so she's a little somber about the whole situation ]

A few weeks extra? Like, a month or two. It's kind of hard to sort through what I knew before and what I know now, I just also know that it's new to me.

[he tilts his head, brows furrowing in concern]

It sounds like you're going to give yourself a headache trying.

Yeah. I should probably not worry about it too much.

[beathach]

Well - no, not if - it warrants much worrying.

[as if he's allowed to tell people to stop worrying, when that's his default]

Is . . . everything okay, though? Back home for you?

Things are... complicated? Definitely complicated. But I'm fine. Winn's fine.

[ she wants to reassure him that no one's dead ]

[she actually catches him as he's stepping out of it to meet her by the shuttles. He stops short just outside of the door]

Oh. Yeah. Sorry. I came straight over.

No - it's fine, I don't mind. Do you want to - ?

[he gestures back to the lab, since it's a lot more private than the kitchen or the bunk area]

[ she heads into the lab, and sits up on the counter if she can ]

[she can! Anything he has going is set off to the side, out of the way in case he does get visitors. He's learning.

He shuts the door behind them]

I'd rather be over here. This is important stuff and I need to talk to Winn about everything, but it's not really a group conversation.

[he quirks a wry smile] I know. I would've waited until after that.

[he winces a little, sympathetic]

Yeah, that's . . . not fun. Especially when it's just - sort of thrown at you, like this.

My sister's a fugitive from the law. There's a substance that can make me like the worst person on the planet—mean, and cruel, and just awful. Oh, and Winn just had to date my work nemesis, who turned out to be a super powered nemesis. Surprise!

. . . incredibly invasive. Geez. [all of that happened in a matter of a month??]

I - why is your sister a fugitive? What happened? [let's. let's start asking about the beginning]

So, I told you about the DEO, right? The organization we work with? Well, Hank Henshaw is the director there and he's... actually a Martian. Like, from Mars.

Turns out when the government is funding an alien hunting organization, they don't like it when an alien assumes the identity of the director. But J'onn—that's his real name—he's a good man. One of the best, actually. That doesn't seem to matter. They arrested him and Alex, for her loyalty, and were going to take her to Project CADMUS, which is like... I don't know. Apparently it's the sort of place where they research aliens. And who knows what they'd do to Alex.

[ the implication of "research" here is very clear. Probably too clear to Hank ]

[it's incredibly, painfully clear. His expression goes from worried and surprised to worried anger on Kara's behalf, and he crosses his arms so he doesn't end up digging his claws into something instead]

That never matters. [he says quietly, agreeing] But - fugitive would imply that she didn't get there? Either of them?
