[It's not hard for Kaneis to notice Jove. The white hair stood out, so did the tale-tell pointed ears of an elf. The tattoos even reminded him a little of Merrill and Fenris's- though that could just be a coincidence. Thedas elves were hardly the ones to invent facial tattoos.]

[Either way, she definitely had the air of someone from the fleet. So when she sets up shop not far from where he's sitting, he'll speak up. Even in this bar, it was easy for someone with his hearing to hear her order at the bar]

You know, if you want liquor that's unpleasant and tastes like fire, you could always ask if anyone's got leftovers from the last couple planets we visited.

[She greets the stranger with a smile, somewhat self-effacing.]

I really was only looking for something strong, if I'm honest. You do have me curious about the other planets now, though. Were they unpleasant, if their alcohol was that bad?

[He gives a half-shrug]

Oh, I'm afraid so. One was a dust ball with people who liked wearing skull facepaint, another was a place stuck in a perpetual winter...

[He considers a bit]

The third wasn't bad. It had a spa, and an enchanted forest that wasn't full of undead or monsters. Never seen that before.

[She laughs softly, even more intrigued.]

Which begs the question, have you seen enchanted forests that are full of undead or monsters?

[He gives a ha as he takes a drink from his mug]

Sure. I went to school near one. Grizzly place.

[Well don't you just keep getting more and more interesting.]

There was a school near something so dangerous?

[Well Jove if there's one rule in your life, it's that everything around you is weird. Including the people you meet]

Well, it wasn't in the backyard, but yeah. You could see it from the rooftop, sure.

Most knew to stay out of it, and it was pretty rare for undead to wander out of the forest, so it's not like we were constantly fearing for our lives.

[You would think that eventually she would get used to the weird, but nope. Hasn't happened quite yet.]

And that was seen as... normal, to have a school so near that?

[In an overly light tone]

Oh of course! We actually seek out cursed forests for our schools. Just like poison marshes are ideal for orphanages!

[Haha just kidding. Tethe'allan orphans are left to fend for themselves, or serve out their parent's outstanding prison term.]

What a pleasant world you come from, in that case.

[She doesn't buy that last bit, hiding a smirk behind her glass as she takes a drink. On the off chance he's telling the truth, laughing at something like that isn't exactly the best move.]

I don't think we've met yet.

Oh, it's the nicest.

[His tone is dry, if that indicates that he's joking about that. But he gives her a nod]

We haven't, just figured I'd start talking and see what happens. [He gives a little lazy salute] Kaneis Major. I'm on the Wonderduck.

The- Wonderduck? [Who the fuck named anything ever something like Wonderduck.] Mine is called the Pathstone, I had expected the names to be more along those lines.

Yep, the Wonderduck. Seems like the names were more of a lottery. Some got neat names and others...not so much.

She's not a bad ship though. The crew takes good care of it.

From what I understand, mine is lacking in... an enthusiastic crew, shall we say. How long have you been on yours?

[The ship, not the crew.]

Ah, yes. Isn't Pathstone the ship with two captains?

[He makes an amused sound] Around four months now. I was among the first group brought here.

That would be it.

[She almost sounds exasperated, but she's still smiling. It's far too early to get fed up with her crew. This is new information though, she isn't sure she's met anyone that's been there as long as Kaneis is claiming.]

Have they given any indication what they want us for, then? I've heard the bit about ratings, but it can't just be for entertainment, can it?

I see. Good luck with that.

[Yeaaah he's heard tales of the Pathstone. No envy for you at all.]

I dunno. If there is something beyond entertainment, they haven't said it. Which is...kinda freaky to think about. But on the other hand, they haven't asked me to travel through time or fight a war for them- so I'd say they're less demanding than the last people who nabbed me.

[It's possible that, for just a second, she goes a little green. She's been there, done that, she's already fighting a war that should have been impossible and another one is definitely not welcome.

Any discomfort can be easily camouflaged as something else, though.]

It is disconcerting. I was informed there have been a lot of elves brought here lately and it's hard to think of any positive reasons for that.

[He snorts]

No kidding. From my experiences, I can tell you a group of elves is never a sign that indicates a good time-

- Uh.

[...Crap. Forgot for a second he was talking to an elf]

[She smiles, but it doesn't reach her eyes. She really is getting tired of how little her people are cared for.]

Not a fan of us, are you?

[A frown forms on his face. There's a pause as he mentally deliberates what to do.]

[Finally, he gives a shrug and decides to be honest] ...I've had decent experiences with elves, one-on-one. They're people just like anyone else. I can see that.

But the only elf group I've encountered? Made a kid wait in a monster-infested swamp forest while our group attended to business because they couldn't stand to have a half-elf dirty their village. Meanwhile the only reason humans were allowed in at all was because we had orders from the King saying they had to help - but they sure did what they could to make it extra difficult.

[Like making them climb a gorge for a leaf and then not warning them the leaf was guarded by a GIANT MONSTER. Thanks guys]

So...no, even if I know they're just people and it's not fair to judge a whole race on one part of them - especially when I haven't met an elf from Heimdall in the fleet? ...I can't deny groups of them makes me feel a little...uneasy.

[Since leaving her own clan, Jove has heard similar disturbing stories about what other groups of elves can be like. It doesn't excuse laying a blanket of hate over her entire race, but it's difficult not to see where someone is coming from when it's accepted to leave a child to die for such dumb reasons. She can't shake memories of Minaeve now, and it's because of her that Jove won't dismiss Kaneis and his explanation.]

I wish it hadn't been so. In Thedas elves mistrust humans because they've rarely treated us as anything better than slaves or servants, and I would like to say I've met more than a handful who do the opposite, but I can't. Still, I try to save my judgements on a case to case kind of basis. I hope this won't... disrupt anything, between us.

[Honestly, the fact Jove's willing to hear him out at all causes him to relax. He gives a shake of his head]

Don't worry, it shouldn't...I don't think. Even if part of me feel uneasy sometimes, I do try to try to treat everyone on a case by case basis.

[He shrugs] 'Sides, like you said- it's not like my kind are a whole lot better. I'm not blind to the terrible things they've done either, it's just...well, I have to see them more, so...I guess I'm more used to their shit than elves'?

[That gets a laugh, at least. Their shit. No one has ever put it more accurately than that.]

I guess all we can hope for is trying to try, hmm? I think we'll get along just fine.
