Oh, I thought I'd do English literature.

Is that different from just plain literature?

[axiomed]

Sort of. It's a different culture of writing after all.

But I thought English was a language, yes?

[axiomed]

It is. But only a certain group of people use that language. There are hundreds of languages around the world, all centered around the country's idiosyncrasies and cultures. As such, the term "English" literature usually means European or American based, two countries that primarily use that language.
