[He's not sure if that's much of a comfort- although perhaps it wasn't meant to be one, but rather a gentle reminder of reality. He knows there's a cost for everything- since leaving home, he's learned that. The cost of freedom is exposure to malevolence. The cost of exploration is danger. The cost of the power he's gained is to be tethered. The cost of loving humans is--

If the cost is too high, it won't be worth it. I'm self-aware enough to recognize my own greed in that regard.

...I guess we'll see.

[He makes no promises. But he'd rather not end up living with too many regrets to handle. The inner conflict that can create, which so often results in one becoming a hellion... that would be the worst fate.]

[He doesn't know what prayer really does for someone like him - his kind are prayed to, not prayed for, and he's never been comfortable with that away - but it isn't like it could hurt anything.]

I think you underestimate how a seraph values one's prayers.

[Whether he believes it's deserving or not, he knows the power of it.]

They said to us once that none would hear us, so I do not even know if my prayers are of use - but if they are, you are welcome to them.

None would hear you? What do you mean? Are your gods no longer listening?

Well. [ Maglor hums wistfully, chosing his words carefully to try and explain ]

For starters they are not... gods. Not as such. But they are the Guardians of our world. But... in my youth I... did something very foolish, and as a result, I was warned that if I, and those with me, would continue, then they would shut us out, and so it has come to pass.

[nerdeology]

I see... is that why you're also barred from the ocean?

[bythewaves]

I am not barred, as such. [ Maglor shakes his head ]

But ... home lies over the western sea, and I may not return, for I am exile. And I... fear the Ocean's fury.

[nerdeology]

Ah. I'm sorry for bringing that up again, it can't be an easy thing to bear.

[Having experienced the ocean at last, he can't imagine being forever separated from both it and home.]

But you've lived for so long already. Can't you be forgiven? Are they so cruel that you can't ever go back?

[bythewaves]

[ Maglor shakes his head with a small sad smile ]

Tis well enough, I mind it not. And tis not them who are cruel, but I - after all that I have done ... well. I would not want me back either.

[nerdeology]

What... happened?

[His question is hesitant; he's used to not being told things by those much older than he, either due to reluctance or the limitations of an oath, but it's impossible not to ask, anyway.]

[ Maglor's eyes are distant and his voice is sad ]

I... killed people. My own people. I killed them for nothing more than an Oath to reclaim the jewels that my father named as weregild for my grandfather. I killed again and again, and stained my soul irreparably.

[nerdeology]

[....Ah...

Mikleo doesn't respond at first, thinking carefully on that. It's not as if he objects to killing as a rule - Rose is an assassin, and he gets along with her just fine, even if they disagree on plenty - but it's the nature of the killing that concerns him.]

Why did you do that for jewels? Why would something like that be so important?

[And that comment about "oaths"... that has him wondering, too.]

Because we were sworn to their reclamation, irregardless of who or what stood in our way. [ Quiet and old and sad ]

They were not that important, truly. But they were my father's finest work, and when grandfather was slain, in his madness and his grief he named them as weregild from the thief who stole the treasures of his heart, both the person and the things, and so are we his sons bound.

[nerdeology]

What is "weregild"? I'm not familiar with the term.

[bythewaves]

Hm, I suppose you could consider it a ... "restituition price" - a blood payment, if you will, for a life stolen.

[nerdeology]

Bound... and you said oath, before. What kind of binding does an oath place on you? Do you have no choice but to obey, or can it be broken?

[bythewaves]

That would depend on the nature of the Oath, eh? By what terms you bound yourself, and to what ends.

[ Softly ] By the highest authority we swore and named them in witness, and to the worst of punishments we bound ourselves should we falter or fail. Words like that have power, Mikleo - and such an Oath should never have been spoken. But speak it we did - thrice did we swear, and so are bound. I... it became a madness. A force of its own that drove us on and on and on, past all reason. I might break it, I suppose - but I fear the Dark that would follow if I did.

[nerdeology]

I... understand, to an extent. I've never made one myself, but seraphim can forge oaths within ourselves, should we choose to. Oaths can grant someone tremendous power, but the cost can vary depending on the nature of the promise made. Breaking the oath can force a terrible price to be paid by the seraph.

[bythewaves]

Even so. It... might be alright? But... I cannot be sure. And so long as my brothers and my father's souls might depend on me not breaking it, I... dare not. Perhaps I am over cautious. But I cannot take that chance.

No, I get that. Things change when your actions will affect the people you care about. It's harder to risk it.
