[He can feel the panic threatening to overwhelm him. It surges in him in waves, each one getting ever close to dragging him away from shore- stability. He barely hears her quip as he tries to take in halting breaths, trying desperately to calm himself.

He hears her the second time, though, and does as asked- trying to focus on her voice. His eyes focus back onto her, onto her outstretched hand, and he takes it. For a moment, he revels in the fact there's no pain at her touch. The normal prickling ache is gone. Had the trade off not been so dire, he might have been glad for it. ]

I can't deal with this.

[ Her fingers curl around his without hesitation, squeezing briefly. Here and solid, something unmovable in the storm of fear and panic undoubtedly swirling around in his head. ]

I don't understand why this is happening. It shouldn't be happening.
