Volcano + Odd Jobs

a. Volcano

[Jennifer had barely had time to adjust to her new ship before they were landing on this new planet. She lingered for a moment on the Wonderduck's offramp before following the crowd to hear about the planet and its rules and regulations.

The innoculations caught her eyes and ears, so before heading out herself, Jennifer stopped to make sure nobody was having trouble vaccinating themselves.]

b. Jobs

[Jennifer had no money thus far, so she figured there wasn't much of a point in going to the taverns or shops around the village. Hearing other people talk about an odd jobs board, she drifted over to it, figuring she may as well make her stay worth her while and earn a little money, since she wasn't sure she'd be earning much while back in space.

However, she pulled a face at some of the jobs offered.]

Rat tails? I wonder what anybody could possibly use rat tails for...

Oh, I do...!

[says a very, very soft-spoken teenager as she's approached. she's been eyeing these things pretty... skeptically, but now she looks a little embarrassed to admit she'd like a hand. she's got good reasons for not watching to touch the things, but...]

I have no idea how to do this...

There's nothing wrong with that- administering a shot is trickier than it looks like. If it makes you feel any better, I'm a doctor, so this is pretty routine for me. Could you hold out your arm, please?

Oh, that does make me feel better. Thanks...

[she's surprised! a doctor who doesn't... look like a reindeer or something. she holds out her arm.]

You're welcome. [Jennifer gives a reassuring smile before she gives the innoculations with practiced ease.] There- you're all set. I'm glad they've provided these for us.

[s-she's a little nervous about having a needle stuck in her arm, but she doesn't look--and then it's over! a big sigh of relief.]

Me too. Unless it was a trap and I've just been poisoned with a horrible disease, but.

A valid concern- but I haven't seen anybody drop to the ground yet. It'd be bad for business if they made their clientele sick, right?

A good point! Wow. You're pretty good at this.

[she smiles, rolling her sleeve back down and rubbing the inside of her arm a little.]

[Jennifer smiles back and winks.]

Good to know all those years in med school weren't wasted. And yes, I am- I only arrived a few days ago.

Well, um, hello. [how cute. she holds out her hand. handshake?] I'm Krista, and I for one am pretty glad that you're here.

[a beat--and she quickly backtracks.] I mean, unless you've got really important stuff that you need to be doing at home. Because then that sucks. And I'm totally sorry you're here instead.

[ Steph was kind of hoping that the job board would give her something to work out her feelings on. But she's not really in the mood to run around picking flowers, and she's not going out and killing animals that aren't really doing anything but existing. She sighs a little. ]

You think they actually need them, or they're just making things up to give us something to do?

[Jennifer smiled over at the other woman. She flicked her collar on, confirming that she was talking to a fellow member of the Fleet, before she spoke.]

If this planet's a tourist trap, I'd say it's probably making up things for us to do. Of course, given the native population's level of advancement, they may well have rat tails on the ingredient list for some sort of cure or potion.

[ She wrinkles her nose a little. ] Sooo maybe not trusting any food here unless we're really sure what's in it... And I was really looking forward to something other than weird processed goo.

Food should be okay... I hope. I'd say as long as you can identify everything in it, you'd be okay. [She looks back at the board- vegetable picking, flower picking, helping prepare land...] I just arrived a few days ago, so I'm going to miss having real stuff soon enough.

I was getting sick of it before I got off the Marsiva. But they let us bring food up to the ships, I think... Maybe I should go pick some vegetables after all. If I ask really nicely they might let me take some with me.

[ She pauses, and then adds: ] I'm Steph, by the way. Welcome to... whatever this is.

[Jennifer smiles shyly back.]

I'm Jennifer- and thanks for the welcome. In that case, I might hoard whatever I can while I can get it, too- I haven't been able to earn money yet, so my options of what to do here are slim.

[ Sure, he knows more about human medicine than he did before, but it is not terribly helpful. Besides, he could always cure himself, right?

But sure, let's ask the human lady if she thinks plant-people need to avoid human sickness this way. ]

Hmm... [Jennifer stopped and took a closer look.] It depends on your physiology and ability to resist disease.

Physiology... Oh! I am made of plants. I think that means I don't have to worry about blood or flesh things.

[ When he says "made of plants", he means living plants all grown together. ... Which is how his clothing is, grown out of him. ]

[Jennifer smiles.]

I'd say better safe than sorry, but I think you might be okay. If you're composed of plant matter, I'm not sure it would even be possible to inject the shot, anyway.

[ He taps his head a couple of times for some very plant-hitting-plant sounds. ]

... Something about veins, right? [ New knowledge is weird, okay? ]

[She nods.]

Humans have an entire bodily system called the circulatory system to carry blood. There's an organ in our chests- the heart- that acts as a pump, and veins take blood to our other organs and body systems. That's why we inject vaccinations and such into veins.

[She regards the one speaking to her with interest.] Sounds like you won't have that concern, though.

[innercactus]

Oh! Yes, we don't have the pump - the heart, so there isn't any of the pulsing when we bleed.

[ He pauses after a moment, thinking. ]

... but we get stiff and tingly if we sit on a leg for too long. Or if it's tied or something?

[ So more like a plant's vascular system. ]

[Jennifer listens.]

Sounds like how a plant would behave, yes. Sorry, I find you to be pretty interesting- I feel like I'm staring too much. [She laughs nervously.]
