[He might find things a bit confusing once he tries to step outside proper. For one, despite the sounding festivities and bob of lights, once he opens the door to the balcony, he's met with...

...well, a balcony. But it overlooks a wide stretch of beach. Makie's there in the corner, on a chair old and rickety and wooden and western, not Japanese, the legs uneven. It's like she fished it out of a dump to sit on. But she looks content, with the shamisen on her lap. The beach is deserted, except for a small blonde girl scrabbling on all fours trying to chase a seagull. But there are storm clouds in the distance.]

I had no quarrel with Sir Manji. Kagehisa-sama asked me to kill him to protect his interests, and I thought... I loved him enough to be an assassin.

[ He blinks, shifting uncertainly at the change, but Makie, at least, he knows, and he comes to sit quietly beside her ]

Ah. That sounds like quite a tale. But an assassin's life is a hard one. Particularly if you are tasked with things you have no wish for.

I am no killer by nature. If I were, so many things would be easier.

[Her skill is unparalleled, though, in her own land. If people don't despise her for it, it's because they see a use for it. She'd prefer a much simpler life.]

Some are what society makes them. My country deems that as a woman without standing I have little value, and there are very, very few opportunities open to such an outcast.
