'cause it's better than nothing

[ Calibration Rooms ]
( for N-Z characters )

Before you post your toplevel comment, please:
1. Check the first letter of your character's name as its written in our tags. N-Z names comment here, and A-M names go to the other post.
2. Make a note in your comment if anything especially triggering or graphic might show up in the Calibration. If you're not sure if something's worth noting or not, we suggest listing it anyway, just to err on the side of caution.
3. Put your character's name (it can be shortened or different from the tag, this time) in the subject of your comment. This will help visitors find you easily, and help us update the list below.
4. Post your comment! It's fine if everyone's Calibrations end up looking and reading very different from one another. As long as you're having fun and following our guidelines, you're good to go. :)
5. If you have any questions or concerns during Calibrations, you are welcome to send them towards the mod team at any time, as always.

    [....Huh.

Felix takes in the...fluidity of the room for a few long seconds before Pavel notices him and speaks up.]

    ...Hey. Seems like it.

[....Is that a starmap....He's very curious and starts sort of gravitating towards it, even while he's got his attention on Pavel.]

Is there anything I shouldn't be touching?

[It is a starmap, and a beautifully-rendered one at that! The entire Alpha Quadrant is displayed on the screen.]

Thank you for asking, but I'm not certain what is where. [He glances at the wall of screens.] For the most part, I mean.

[Anyway. He moves over to the console and gives it a fond pat.] This was my place on the bridge.

I'm pretty sure I'm still jealous about your ship in general.

[He'd seen the rest of the bridge in Kirk's head last time this whole dance was performed.

...Also Felix definitely notices the way that Pavel glances at one particular spot. He's not going to prod, though.

Getting closer to the map, his gaze flickers across it's surface....looking to see specifically if Earth is there.]

    As you should be.

[The Enterprise was gorgeous, okay? Felix is right to be jealous.

The map brightens as Felix approaches. Earth is indeed there, clearly marked and located near the center of the quadrant.]

Do any of the systems look familiar to you?
    scanninggaydis: (all along the watchtower)

    ...They don't, unfortunately.

[He does take some time to peruse it, though.

And then he reaches out to touch his fingers to the spot where Earth is.]

Perhaps I can find other starmaps...

[Or perhaps not. When Felix touches Earth, a memory takes form.

It's the engineering room of a ship: a cavernous metal room full of ramps, catwalks, displays, and machinery. The scene is illuminated by red emergency lights and the occasional flash of something malfunctioning--or worse, exploding in a shower of sparks. A klaxon is blaring. Most alarmingly of all, gravity isn't working. Red-shirted men, women, and others, many of them injured and all of them grim, are trying to navigate the mechanical carnage. A few bodies float lifelessly through the chamber.]

    Evacuate the area!

[That's Pavel. The Russian (younger than he is in the Fleet by a few years) is floating several feet above the ground and digging inside of a sparking panel, one arm looped though the panel's handle so he doesn't drift away from it. The Russian's expression is equal parts concentration and panic.

The few remaining officers--the ones who are still moving under their own power--acknowledge Pavel's order with ayes or nods and begin making their ways to the exits.

There's a sudden, alarming lurch and a distant roar. Bright white lights turn on and the alarms fall silent; gravity reasserts itself. Pavel's downward descent is halted by the handle, but not everyone in the department is so lucky. Screams are cut short as bodies collide with ramps and railings and the cold metal floor.

Pavel lets go of the handle and drops somewhat gracelessly to the deck. For a moment, he stares blankly at the still body of a young woman in a red uniform. Her blonde updo is matted with blood and her blue eyes are wide open. She's only a little older than him.

(There's a flash of a memory within the memory: Pavel behind a console, looking at a transporter pad where a Vulcan is reaching out to nothing.)

The engineering section spins back into focus. Are there more alarms going off than there were before? Is that even possible?

Pavel pulls himself together and consults the nearest intact readout screen. It's bad. It's bad and there's no way to fix it, not even if he'd asked the other engineers to further endanger themselves and stay, but he has to try something. Kirk put him in charge of engineering. He trusted him.

What a terrible idea that was.

The ship's gravity begins to shift once more. Pavel loses his footing and--

And the memory ends. The klaxons and emergency lights fade away.]

[Not that Felix was ever engineering specifically, but this is...a sadly familiar feeling for him, plunged into the middle of a crisis. There's part of him that immediately feels compelled to start helping out in whatever way he can and he actually has to remind himself that this isn't his crisis to fix, that it's something that happened who knows how long ago.

So he just watches in tense silence until it's all over and he's back in the decidedly calmer strange space he started in.]

Well. [He clears his throat a little awkwardly.] Good to know crises in space are multi-universal.

[Which...of course they are, but saying that he's sorry space was rough for Pavel too seems...weak.]
    candothat: ((´͈ ᵕ `͈))

[That is not one of the memories that Pavel would have voluntarily shared and he's immensely grateful for Felix's lack of questions.]

Is it? I like to imagine that there are universes where working in space is a calm, safe affair.
