It...was the hardest battle. He was my friend. But he was going to kill Bucky and I couldn't...I couldn't let him do that.

[He keeps looking straight ahead, remembering that time. Remembering before. It hadn't been an easy call but he'd make the same one all over again.]

We still haven't spoken. Maybe we never will.

[passingthrough]

Of course you couldn't. I'm not sure you could have if he wasn't your friend either. [Steve standing by and watching an injured man killed in front of him? It didn't sound right to her. But she's missing context too.] Why was he going to kill Bucky?

[Steve winces.]

I don't know how much you know about Bucky. But...when he died falling off that train, he hadn't actually died. He was taken by Hydra and used as their weapon for seventy years. Brainwashed. He couldn't refuse them. Couldn't stop himself. And one of those missions...

[The screen flickers and a movie plays. ]

I...remember this. [Seeing it again triggered the foggy memory to resurface and it takes her a second to remember where she saw it.] Last calibrations in Bucky's mind, but just the attack on Howard and the woman as a memory, not a video. And not the rest of it.

[brooklyn_boy]

We knew him. Howard. Both of us knew him.

[He bends all the way forward, showing the weight that this holds on his mind. It's painful, even here. What Bucky had to go through. What he had to know Steve knew.]

He didn't have a choice. It wasn't his fault. If he had... If he could have stopped, he would have. That wasn't Bucky.

I know. I don't blame him.

But they weren't my parents. [So she could understand how that man reacted in the moment too.]

[Steve sighs.]

I know. Tony... I don't know if I blame him for the way he acted. But he was going against the wrong person. I didn't know what else to do but stop him.

[passingthrough]

He looked like he thought you were going to kill him. [Part of her thinks that's smart. You should never turn that reflex off. That gets you dead. She would know. Another part of her thinks it's obvious Steve wouldn't do that.]

He might have stopped himself if the odds hadn't been against him so he could act out on it. But you'd know better than me.

[brooklyn_boy]

That wasn't the Tony I knew. I had no idea what he would or wouldn't do.

[It was part of what had made Steve fight so hard. He looked over and saw that intellect and focus land on revenge. There was nothing that could have stood in his way so he had to be stopped.]

I feel like he regrets it now, but I can't know for sure.

[passingthrough]

You never tried to make contact again? Because you were in hiding after this? [She had heard something of the problems at large.]

I gave him a phone. I was never angry at him; I did what I had to do for Bucky. But no. He never called. Not yet.

The hiding didn't help I'm sure.

Giving someone a phone is still a passive kind of contact. Didn't think he was ready if he didn't initiate?

[brooklyn_boy]

Something like that. Tony...[He sighs.] He's a proud man. I want to make sure that the first step comes from him. Otherwise... I don't think it'll stick.

[passingthrough]

[She nods.] It's always possible he'll show up here. I mean, maybe not specifically here. [Gesturing to the theatre] But the fleet. Lots of Avengers have passed this way.

[brooklyn_boy]

I don't even know what I'd say if he did. And who knows when he'd be yanked from.

[Still, it's a nice thought. Tony was a friend. He hopes they can be once again.]

Yeah, the timeline part can be tricky. More than tricky. Or the part where one day you're from your current timeline and the next morning you might wake up from a different one. [At least for all you non-dead-back-home people.]

Think any of the exists will work or should I peak at more of your totally not secret private memories?

[Steve looks over at Kitty and then to the door in the back of the theater. The door has light behind it and, as he watches it, the sliver widens until the opening is wide open.]

I guess you're free to go whenever you want. It's been nice meeting you, Kitty.

Well, I would like to get to know you as you more, but since we don't actually know for sure either of us will even remember any of this and it can get kind of awkwardly invasive, probably best to use the door. It was good seeing you again for the first time, Steve. [She smiles at him warmly.]
