Well, there is one place to land to take care of all that, and that's on a dusty old moon in front of a planet that no one wants to go to. On this moon, you'll find a civilization that looks a lot like one's stepped into a wild west movie, hardened cowpolk and mutant horses and all. Will you become a vigilante, hunting bounties and stopping gangs from doing their dirty work? Will you go exploring planetside, with a cowboy hat and a stalk of wheat in your mouth to complete the look? Good luck with that; there is no wheat. This town ain't big enough for all you flooters, but make it so! For the ratings!

[She takes a deep breath, calming herself after that initial shock.]

But, please know, you're not obligated to tell me. That was just... unexpected.

Yeah. Sorry.

And... I don't know. I don't really care, except it's complicated. Usually I feel like I have to... I guess, comfort people when I get into it. There are reasons I don't want to go back, except to get my sister.

[Literally. Even the most ruthless of the Federation's enemies would never sacrifice children. Sometimes she wonders if humans really aren't the most brutal species in the galaxy.]

If you're wondering, no one has to do... anything like that as a trade off for food and medicine.

Well, that's good. The last place I was, we didn't have to pay with money, but we did do tasks, sometimes.

The last place... you mean not home, right? Another place like this, where they take people from different universes to live together?

Yeah. They also took our memories and made us earn them back.

[dancingmd]

[Her hand automatically goes to the implant at the nape of her neck. No doubt Atroma could do that here, if they wanted. The thought makes her shudder.]

That's awful!

It wasn't great but I'd still take it over the Games.

[She frowns. The Games? Another universe, or Nova's own?]

And now? Are your memories intact?

I'm not... entirely sure. A lot of them are, but how can you really tell?

Short of a full brain scan, I suppose you can't really.

Yeah. I'm not completely convinced I have everything back but... I don't know if I want to, right now.

[She nods, if not in agreement, at least in understanding. Having lost all her memories once before, she's personally not keen to go through that again, yet she's not going to presume what is best for Nova, especially seeing as she only has only the tiniest inkling of an idea of what Nova went through at home.]

That's understandable. Regardless, I'm sorry for what you went through.

I might. It's hard to predict what we'll find at the next house. Some of my cases have been relatively simple issues that I can attend to easily, but other times... well, they don't have many resources here. We'll do what we can though.

[Beverly gives her another small smile, then beckons for her to follow as she heads off to her next case. Consulting a piece of paper with a handrawn map on it, with certain houses marked in red, she leads Nova to a tiny tin house - more of a shack, really. Before knocking, Beverly stops and opens her medkit, pulling out two pairs of gloves and two surgical masks. She hands a set to Nova.]

I don't know if we'll need this, but, here, just in case.

[She pulls on her own gloves and hangs the mask around her neck, not pulling it up quite yet. People are not usually comforted by the sight of a masked person showing up on their doorstep, however well intentioned they are.]

Though it's just as much for their safety as ours, maybe more so.
