[ Calibration Rooms ]
( for N-Z characters )

Before you post your toplevel comment, please:
1. Check the first letter of your character's name as its written in our tags. N-Z names comment here, and A-M names go to the other post.
2. Make a note in your comment if anything especially triggering or graphic might show up in the Calibration. If you're not sure if something's worth noting or not, we suggest listing it anyway, just to err on the side of caution.
3. Put your character's name (it can be shortened or different from the tag, this time) in the subject of your comment. This will help visitors find you easily, and help us update the list below.
4. Post your comment! It's fine if everyone's Calibrations end up looking and reading very different from one another. As long as you're having fun and following our guidelines, you're good to go. :)
5. If you have any questions or concerns during Calibrations, you are welcome to send them towards the mod team at any time, as always.

[And now Keith can learn about Zuko. What an education for him. ]

The memory flickers, not showing much at first, just a deluge of feelings, of mistrust, of anger, hate. You would almost be forgiven for thinking this is a memory of a dangerous enemy, which, for a while, it is. That soon give way though, instead shifting to a hot air balloon, flying over the ocean. You're lounging in the back while a teenager with a distinctive scar on his face shoots fire form his hands into the balloons core- keeping it afloat. Things are a little...awkward, the conversation is stilted, when it happens at all. Then, eventually, you break the silence.

"You know, a friend of mine actually designed these war balloons."

"No kidding," the sullen one replies.

"Yep!" you confirm. "A balloon. But for war."

"If there's one thing my dad's good at, it's war," the boy replies, throwing another ball of fire into the engine.

"Yeaaaaaaaaah, it seems to run in the family," you reply dryly.

"Hey!" the boy turns to glare. "Hold on, not everyone in my family is like that!"

You raise your hands in surrender.

"I know, I know," you say, trying to pacify him. "You've changed."

"I mean my uncle," he looks down to the ground. "He was more of a father to me, and I really let him down."

This...you can understand, your expression softens. A solid feeling of fellowship drops into your heart and sticks there.

"I think your uncle would be proud of you," you say, and mean it. "Leaving your home to come help us? That's hard."

"It wasn't that hard," he admits.

"Really?" you ask. "You didn't leave behind anyone you cared about?"

"Well...I did have a girlfriend. Mae"

You grin, leaning forward a little. This is gossip and you love it.

"That gloomy girl who sighs a lot?"

"Yeah," and the guy looks pretty lovestruck, just for a moment, then his smile drops again. "Everyone in the Fire Nation thinks I'm a traitor. I couldn't drag her into it."

You sit back, trying to think of a way to make him feel better, a little surprised that you do, indeed, want to make him feel better. Eventually, you settle on something to make that problem seem small in comparison.

"My first girlfriend turned into the moon."

The scarred boy stares at the sky-it's day, but still. He contemplates that comment, trying to find the right response.

    "...That's rough, buddy."

And then, the memory fades, but there's a nice solid feeling of friendship, no, of family left behind. The scar boy is good people, and Sokka loves him like a brother for it.

That was oddly... familiar... the sense of hating someone, only to come around to liking them later. Keith kind of smiled a bit. Good for Sokka. He put the sword back, and then moved over to the sculpture. Leaning in close, he examined the details, not touching it right away because it was made out of snow, after all, but then he couldn't help himself.

He touched one of the larger balloon/sail-like parts.

[He's endlessly glad they gave Zuko a chance. There's no way the war would have been won without him, and he would have missed out on a dear friend at the same time.

The sculpture seemed to be pretty sound, not crumbling under Keith's touch (further proof it's absolutely not something Sokka made himself). As he touches it, the memory comes in around him.
    ]

EVERYTHING is chaos. The world is burning, the air is unbelievably hot all around you. You are riding on top of a metal airship, as it burns and ploughs into other airships in a long line. This was part of the plan, but the actual getting off is a little trickier. You run with two girls, your hand gripped tightly with the smaller of the two. She's blind, she needs you the most. A piece of the rigging crumbles, and the other girl falls down.

"Suki!!!" you scream, watching he go, helpless.

She lands on another ship, raises her hand.

"I'm okay!" she calls. "Just finish the mission!"

"No," you whisper, dread settling inside you not again.

The blind girl tugs your arm.

    "Sokka, I think we've gotta-"

She and you half jump, half fall down towards the next burning airship and the one you were standing on SLAMS into it. You land hard, but you instantly leap on top of the blind girl, protecting her body from the burning, falling debris with your own. You wait for a second for the worst to stop falling, before letting her go. Hopefully, she won't kick you for the heroism later, but you're not counting on it. You stand and run, hands still on the blind girl, pulling her along. You need to get the heck off this carnage, and preferably without dying in the process.

"Toph," you pause. "Metal-bend the rudder so it's jammed in a turning position. The ship will spiral and slam into the others."

The blind girl, Toph, grabs you by the shoulders, moves you out of the way.

"Got it," she says, before gripping the metal rudder, pulling it as if it were made of fabric, She bends it into a turning position, and the ship starts towards the line of airships not currently on fire. That should deal with the rest of the fleet.

"Have I ever mentioned how sweet it is that you invented metalbending?" you say, throwing her a grin you know she can't see.

"You could stand to mention it more," she grins back all the same, she knows, she gets it, she gets you.

Your ship crashes into more, and soldiers from within come onto the roof, throwing fireballs at you. You grab Toph again, and make another run for it. You take a running leap off the side, unsheathing your sword as you do so. You keep one hand tight on Toph, the other slamming your sword into the side of the ship. Metal cuts through metal, but it at least slows your drop enough so when you hit a metal joust, you don't end up dead. Your leg breaks with a sickening crack but you push past the rushing pain to focus on what's more important. Toph doesn't hit the joust and dangles precariously over the edge. You tighten your grip on her hand. Whatever happens, even as your arm muscles scream in agony at the weight, you will not let her go.

"My leg" he grit out, then look down at her. "Hang on, Toph!"

"Aye aye, Captain," she responds, and there's a rare look of fear in her sightless eyes.

Two more soldiers flank you. With your one free hand, you throw your boomerang, it hits one of the soldiers, knocking him off balance as he drops to the fiery inferno below. You kick up your working leg, catching your fallen sword and catching it, flinging it at the other soldier. It slices through the joust he was standing on, dropping him into the abyss. You watch your sword vanish down with him.

"Bye space sword," you say quietly, jeez, you loved that thing.

More soldier surround you, and you know that you are done. You have no weapons, you have nothing, and yet you still hang on tightly to Toph. You will not let her go.

"I don't think boomerang is coming back, Toph," you say, and you see tears welling in her eyes. "I think this is the end."

You wait for death- but it does not come. The soldiers suddenly run away, gasping in horror. You turn and frown, confused, as another airship comes towards you, slamming into the airship you're on. You and Toph drop onto it, you land badly on your broken leg and pain flares into you again.

"How did that happen?" asks Toph, confused. "Did boomerang come back?"

"No," your face lights up as you see your saviour, leaning on one of the ropes holding the airship together, like the glorious warrior woman she is. "Suki did."

And with this moment of small victory, the memory fades.

[Keith actually stumbled back and fell. It took a second for him to realize that his leg was actually fine, and that was Sokka's memory. Was there anyone else here? He glanced around, getting up again, though the lingering sensation of pain sort of made him a little cautious at first as he took a few steps.

No... no. He was good. That was okay.

Keith another glance back at the airship and frowned. In a few of these, now, he'd come across the actual person, right? So, maybe he was here. He called out.]

    Sokka?!
alwayscomeback: (And if we should die tonight)

    [personal profile] alwayscomeback 2017-06-16 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
[Sorry, Kieth, still no Sokka. He's staying firmly by the Blue Fish sculpture, not going in either version of his village. It's better there. No decisions or choices need to be made there.

Still, hey, at least he won the battle? That's good right?
    ]
    tempredmental: (Concerned Or Sad)

    [personal profile] tempredmental 2017-06-18 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
[Oh... right. He was out there. Keith gave one last look back at the rest of the village for a moment, and then headed back out to where Sokka was standing.]

Hey. [He tried giving a small wave. Not everyone was responsive in their own mindscapes, and he was hoping this was one where he was.]
alwayscomeback: (I never said another word)

    [personal profile] alwayscomeback 2017-06-18 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
[Sokka turns, and offers Keith a welcoming smile. Yeah, it sure looks like he's functioning fine. ]

Oh, hey buddy. You've been enjoying looking around?
    tempredmental: (Soft Smile)

    [personal profile] tempredmental 2017-06-19 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
[Keith gave Sokka a weak smile.]

I like that I can't feel how cold it is.

[He glanced back, able to see both the villages again.]

So, you don't mind me being here?
    alwayscomeback: (Which will refresh)

    [personal profile] alwayscomeback 2017-06-19 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
You do come across as someone who'd be a wuss in the cold.

[NO OFFENCE OR ANYTHING, PAL. He smiles and shrugs.]

Nah, it's cool. I like this place.

[It's COMPLICATED, but he still loves it. ]
    tempredmental: (Uh...)

    [Wat...]
    tempredmental: (Side-eyeing You Big Time)

    2/2

    [personal profile] tempredmental 2017-06-20 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
[Keith decided to let that slide for now.]

    What's with the two villages?

[He recognized the Blue Fish, so he had a feeling what that was. He could be horribly wrong, but... eh.]
alwayscomeback: (It's empty in the valley of your heart)

    [personal profile] alwayscomeback 2017-06-21 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
    Oh...those.

    [Sokka's brow furrows. ]

One is the village I lived in as a kid, the other is how it is now. After the war.
    tempredmental: (Wait What?)

    [personal profile] tempredmental 2017-06-22 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
    That's a big difference.

[Way to state the obvious there, Keith.]

I guess it's better, yeah? [Though, Sokka's reaction didn't make it seem like it was.]
    alwayscomeback: (Unsaid unheard)

    [personal profile] alwayscomeback 2017-06-22 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
[Sokka doesn't reply right away. He stares off at that city, uncomfortable, very much unhappy. ]

It's progress. It means our tribe will finally have a place in the world, be taken seriously...but I'm not sure if it's a completely 'better' thing, either.
    tempredmental: (Wait What?)

    [personal profile] tempredmental 2017-06-23 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
[Keith raised an eyebrow. That was an odd way of putting it.]

    Why not?
    alwayscomeback: (With without)

    [personal profile] alwayscomeback 2017-06-24 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Because it means the North has all but taken over. We've...lost a lot of our identity in the process. We might lose more yet, too. It's change, and things do end up different. It's just... a lot at once. My people aren't happy.
    tempredmental: (This Is So Confusing)

    [personal profile] tempredmental 2017-06-25 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Did they attack your village or something that they took over?

    [Keith was a little confused.]
alwayscomeback: (I’m a desert in the rain)

    [personal profile] alwayscomeback 2017-06-25 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Not...exactly. The North are our sister tribe. We're both Water Tribe, we've just been separated by well, the world for a long time. They originally came to help the South rebuild after the war, we needed it. But the North just kinda...made everything more North-y while they were doing it.
    tempredmental: (Determination)

    [personal profile] tempredmental 2017-06-26 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
    [Keith considered that.]

So, even if it's helping, and it's progress... it's still losing your identity.

I guess I kind of get what they're doing, because they're going with what they know and helping out, but, at the same time, they're sort of just running all over what makes you guys... well, you.

I can see how that would be pretty frustrating.
    alwayscomeback: (We trust we doubt)

    [personal profile] alwayscomeback 2017-06-26 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
You hit it right on the head there My sister is really unhappy about it. Thing is?

[He glances over at the city, brows furrowed. ]

The Southern Water Tribe we grew up in was a war-torn mess. The war lasted a hundred years. No one alive remembers how we actually used to be, in peace. Whatever we're becoming now, it's...something different. but honestly, our true identity was lost a century ago when the Fore Nation started wiping us out.
    tempredmental: (Brooding)

    [personal profile] tempredmental 2017-06-27 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
[Keith had seen that with a few races. The Balmerans they had met had never known anything else. The Galra had taken over generations before the ones they knew, and they were born into slavery, knowing nothing else. They'd lost who they were as a people. He frowned.]

    That's rough, buddy.

    That must be hard.

    [He considered what he'd seen.]

So, that one guy... with the scar. I guess he's from the Fire Nation. That explains why you resented him at first.

[And why the other teen had seemed to partially accept the resentment. Keith felt that. He hadn't pushed back against Allura's anger towards him over the Galra thing because, well, he could understand why, even if it hurt.]
alwayscomeback: (You will leave these things behind)

    [personal profile] alwayscomeback 2017-06-30 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah. For a long time, he wanted to win back his father's affection- he was the prince of the Fire Nation, his father led them. He was our enemy for...a while.

[He smiles, and it's fond. ]

Eventually, he realised he didn't want his father's acceptance. That it was more important to do the right thing and help stop the war. He's Fire Lord now. Working for a better world, to undo the mistakes his Nation made.
    tempredmental: (Don't Mess With Me)

    [personal profile] tempredmental 2017-07-03 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
That's going to be a hard thing to do. I hope it can work.

[After all, Keith had a feeling the Blade of Marmora was going to have a similar task ahead of them... fighting against their own kind, and trying to repair the damage while people hate them simply because they're the same as the ones who caused all the problems in the first place.

It was something that he'd almost been a target of himself, and he was nervous as a result. Allura's reaction had set a thought process in his head. How was he supposed to work for Voltron if word ever got out about his heritage? Would people be so willing to accept their help if that happened?

    He was nervous.]
alwayscomeback: (But I will hold on hope)

    [personal profile] alwayscomeback 2017-07-04 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Me too. I think he's got it in him to do it. He's stubborn.

[Sokka's tone is fond, all the same. Zuko's a pain in the ass, but he's a brother and Sokka would do anything for him. Sokka feels Zuko is living proof that anyone can change for the better, if they so chose. Pick the path that's best for as many people as they could. He'd heartily say the same applied to Keith. ]

So. Is there anything else you'd want to see?
    tempredmental: (Content Smile)

    [personal profile] tempredmental 2017-07-05 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
If you wanna show me around.

[Keith gave Sokka a small smirk.]

Maybe what your village used to be before it became some big city?
