i know you, that look in your eyes is so familiar a gleam
( for N-Z characters )
Before you post your toplevel comment, please:
1. Check the first letter of your character's name as its written in our tags. N-Z names comment here, and A-M names go to the other post.
2. Make a note in your comment if anything especially triggering or graphic might show up in the Calibration. If you're not sure if something's worth noting or not, we suggest listing it anyway, just to err on the side of caution.
3. Put your character's name (it can be shortened or different from the tag, this time) in the subject of your comment. This will help visitors find you easily, and help us update the list below.
4. Post your comment! It's fine if everyone's Calibrations end up looking and reading very different from one another. As long as you're having fun and following our guidelines, you're good to go. :)
5. If you have any questions or concerns during Calibrations, you are welcome to send them towards the mod team at any time, as always.

Sure did. Well, the little place, anyway. The bigger part is...new.

Industrialization, I take it.
[ That seemed pretty obvious from the memories and the current sight before him. Machines had come to this land, and with them their poison and their blessing. ]

Oh. Oil. That's a story as old as time in my world.
[ He shook his head. ]
Do you and the north not quite get along? Or let me guess, the North thinks they now have a right to run the South because they found the oil?

Do you want advice? I'm not sure if it can help you much for when you go home, but my world has been through this sort of thing, and we do hammer our trade agreements like this quite a bit between new Federation planets. Not that that will solve everything, but...
[ He gave a half shrug. ]

I'll take just about anyone's advice, honestly. Any way forward is a way forward.

A common thing, when oil was the prevalent fuel source in my world, was for companies to lease the land where the oil was found. Your tribe, the south, could lease the land to the North - for a period of 99 years. You would have a solid source of income, and it can include certain amounts of the oil they bring up.
And with a solid contract, it protects your tribe. The North won't be able to push you around, and you'll have the solid income source to advance your own tribe.
[ It wasn't the prettiest of solutions or a perfect one, but he thought it could work as a stop gap to help him. ]

That's...not a bad idea, actually. If I manage to get home and remember this, I'll be sure to talk to my dad about it. See if we can make an arrangement that works like that, so we don't get...well, lost.
Thanks. That was actually helpful.

[ He nodded. ]
I'm glad, and I hope it does help you. I understand wanting to hold on to your roots, to your culture. And that is possible while also advancing forward.
But that, I can't really help with. That's something you and your people will have to figure out together, but I have a feeling you'll do it. Just have faith in your own decisions, even when everyone else around you is just full of spit and spite.

[It might fail eventually, but he'll just have to brace himself for that, and have another plan in the works to hop right back onto from it. ]

I think the easiest thing to do is remind yourself that people are scared. Scared of change. It's not entirely irrational a fear, but it's not so great a one as they think.
[ He let out a soft sound and rubbed the back of his neck. ]
Sorry, I don't mean to lecture you. But that's the advice we give to a lot of new governments we meet when we're encouraging them to join the Federation.
no subject
[He's not sure what he would have done if he'd lost his father, too. He smiles, though it's a little faint. ]
I'm not taking it as one. It's good advice, solid.
no subject
What? God... I'm sorry. That's... yeah, that's tough, when it goes that far. That's not just fear that's full on mob mentality. At that point, I would suggest knocking some sense into them, your sister too. It doesn't help if the leading family is divided.
[ He shook his head. ]
I wish I had more answers for you, but this is just one of those things that people have to work out for themselves. But I can guarantee you this - if you don't figure it out, you will get left behind and ground beneath the feet of the North or anyone else. It's a harsh reality, but a very real one.

[They need to be able to find togetherness in this, or they'll be swallowed whole. ]
Especially with that oil there. We could have been left alone, but not now. And I don't think we should be. We need to take our place in the world, just like the others. It's bad enough the Air Nomads are gone, we need to be able to keep the South going, too.
no subject
[ Kirk shook his head. ]
No. I sincerely doubt you would have been left alone. For a little bit at least, but eventually? Eventually the advancements would come, the pressure. Staying isolated is difficult, and it will harm you in the end. Better that you try and at least get a toe hold on the world stage now.
[ He knew it might not be exactly what Sokka wanted to hear, but it was a truth he knew from his own world and on many others. ]
You're doing the right thing, Sokka. Eventually your people will see that.
no subject
[She'll get there, eventually, he hopes. ]
Thanks, I'm just trying to do what's best for them.
