[ and the what-if scenario no longer holds interest to loki. looking at the past is not an aspect of his character anymore, despite how well it defined him for a time. ]

[She stares at him flatly. She's not going to say that he doesn't know anything about her, or that he wouldn't say that if he'd seen her leave the Avengers in puddles of their own drool, but she is definitely thinking it. Finally she huffs and turns away.]

That's not good enough.

[Does he really expect her to believe in acceptable casualties? What happened with the Hulk...that was a terrible mistake. He was never supposed to go anywhere near the city.]

I'm tired of getting revenge. I want to stop these things from happening.

[dothelokimotion]

[ loki is pretty sure acceptable casualties is the motto of the avengers until it's someone they know. they only galvanized themselves against him when loki hurt someone they knew. which is why he finds their hypocrisy a little annoying, but typical of the stereotype they wish to fit into. he cocks an eyebrow at her. ]

And you think a group called the Avengers would help with that?

[ they tend to avenge, but be bad at everything else. ]

[She raises her own right back.]

Where else was I supposed to go? Another cage?

I had nothing else. And they were good to me.

[ loki snorts. ]

They're only good to those who conform to their own ideals.

[seeingscarlet]

And you have no reason to be biased.

[This is still mostly a teasing tone, nothing too biting.]

[ loki shrugs. ]

I'm biased, not blind. They're a predictable lot after all.

They might surprise you. They weren't what I thought.

[ loki huffs. ]

They've yet to do so with me. No, the Avengers have always been what I've always thought they'd be. I hardly hold any expectations of their improvement.

[seeingscarlet]

[She gives him a flat look.]

It would help if you gave them a chance.

[Oh yes, she heard about that 'sexless doll' comment. Rude. And it says volumes about how little he's actually engaged with them or he'd know better.

Then again, she also has the benefit of being able to look into anyone's mind whenever she likes.]

But you didn't come here just to insult my friends, did you?

[ hmm. his eyes narrow briefly before he realizes why. he schools his expression. ]

I did not, though I did not wander here voluntarily either.

[seeingscarlet]

[Well, nothing to be done about it. Wanda makes a soft 'hmmm' sound and regards him curiously. He must want something. That's why she has to stay here, after all.]

...don't touch the Scepter. There's nothing worth seeing.

[She's not necessarily going to stop him over that, though - he can learn that lesson for himself.]

[ he gives her a flat look at that. ]

Why would I want to touch that thing again?

But if you don't want me to warn you about things you won't want to see...

[She's not going to willingly let him touch the golden flowers on the balcony, of course, but he might be one of the few people she would let near Ultron's heart.]

[ loki shrugs. he's not particularly afraid of what could be in someone's mind. he's been in plenty and has used that to his advantage. ]

I will be fine.

[seeingscarlet]

[She shrugs noncommittally.]

You do this often?

[dothelokimotion]

Yes, actually.

[ loki moves across the room, looking around. ]

A good deal of my powers reside on the mental plane.

[seeingscarlet]

[It's a comfortable enough room, aside from the cagelike observation door. A gilded cage, but is it keeping Wanda in or everyone else out?]

Then you should know that not everything here is safe.

[And it's more than just the Scepter or Ultron's heart. For now, there's no sign of anyone else, but Koschei is never really far. And outside is many things, but safe is not one of them.]

[ loki glances at her. ]

And? Why should a mind be safe? Why should you be?

Most people still expect me to be.

[Most people just don't know what to do with someone like her.]

[dothelokimotion]

[ loki makes a quiet noise at the back of his throat. ]

And who do you want to be?

[seeingscarlet]

[It should be such a simple question, shouldn't it?]

Myself.

[She's still figuring out what that is now, but it certainly doesn't feel good to smile and pretend parts of herself don't exist for the sake of preserving someone else's delicate sensibilities. They want her to protect them, but there are enough vocal people who seem to expect her to be completely tame otherwise...and that's just not how it works. But when you're also hyperaware of the emotional temperature of a room...]

Not a monster.

[ not particularly. it's certain a question loki has faced often enough and finally pushed through the crucible to get it. he pauses briefly before moving along. ]

All things are monsters. There is nothing you, me or the Avengers have not done that are not monstrous. Monsters do not come from the dark. They come from the lies we tell ourselves.

[seeingscarlet]

[She takes a minute to absorb that. It's a lot to unpack.]

Not everything. Not everyone. [Most of the Avengers...well, it depends on your perspective, doesn't it. But not everyone. She shakes her head.] Not love.

But I know what I've done.

[dothelokimotion]

[ loki scoffs lightly. ]

Make no mistake. Love can make monsters out of people. To deny our ability to be monstrous to give power to those who wish to use it as a weapon.

[ monster, witch, creature. loki's been called every name in the book. and it's all true and it always will be. after all, odin himself said wherever loki goes, he'll bring death and destruction. he was not wrong. why deny what gives a person power?

what is power if it is unused, laid in the service of the guilty? to be a noose that must tighten in servitude. ]

It is not about knowing or even the context. Your life is your own. At the end of the day, I am not your enemy. The world is not your enemy. You are your own enemy.
