[She curls her fingers into his shirt and silently shakes her head, eyes still tightly shut.]

[ Carefully. ]

Doctor Beverly's world sounds quite nice at times.

[Very quietly:] Do you not want me to come to your world?

[Beverly is be nice, and she likes her. But Charles is the only one who has offered her any sense of a mission, of being useful.]

I do. And I do think you'd make an excellent addition to the school.

[ He pauses. ] But I also want you to explore as many possibilities as you can.

You're the only one who's offered. [And she's not going to go where she isn't useful.

And really, the only person who trumps Charles in importance is Winter, and... He doesn't need her for anything like that, she doesn't think.]

[ Hm. That may be true, but he doubts that many people know that Wrath requires a place outside of the Fleet. ]

[ It wasn't a joke, but Charles holds his tongue. He knows there are some things Wrath isn't prepared to handle. Individuality is a difficult thing to hold onto. ]

[She still has a difficult time understanding the idea that someone would want her around for a reason other than her ability to perform a job. It conflicts too directly with a deeply planted directive.]

[ His lips quirk. ]

[She considers this as a serious question.]

[ He winces. ]

[ He sighs. ]

I know what you . . . needed from that, I'm sure. The same thing Winter does, at times. But Erik is -- [ He pauses. ] He's not a weapon, even though his powers may have that capability.

Erik reminds me too much of Envy sometimes, maybe.

But I know he's a person. And I'm still really sorry about it. [But it's people who are going to have to stop her or Winter, if it comes to that.]

[ He nods. ]

I guess there isn't anyone here I don't think is a person. [Except for herself. But Winter said together or not at all, so... if Winter is a person, it seems she has to be too, somehow.]

[Her hand seeks out one of Charles's, not because she has any thoughts about the projecty-whatever Charles mentioned, but because it's another gesture for herself, something to hold on to. An assurance of the reality of the situation.]

Winter said together or not at all. So if I think he's a person, that means I have to be a person too.

[ Smart man, Charles thought as he squeezes her hand gently. ]
