a. exploration

[It's nearly a week before Erik ventures onto the planet of this system, his interest being fairly low. He can't deny, though, that being on such a green world is refreshing, after so many weeks in space. He appreciates the chance to stretch his legs in fresh air, at least.

He tends not to stray far from the ship, venturing out into the edges of the forest and wandering among the undergrowth. On rare occasions he'll frown, and hold his hand out, a stray bolt or piece of scrap metal hidden under the forest floor jumping into his fingers. He turns them over in his hands, uncertain where they could have come from on such a world.]

b. deeper forest

[When he does strike farther out, he ends up coming across a herd of deer-like creatures. They certainly look like deer, though a couple of feet taller than any deer he'd seen before. The animals had scattered when he first appeared at the edge of the little clearing, but once he sits on a stump in silence for a while, they begin to come back.

Erik merely watches them, grazing and wandering in the grass. His thoughts and emotions turned inwards, he murmurs something to himself, heedless of if anyone else is around to hear.]

[Gemini's been exploring this forest ever since her shuttle landed, flying over the trees as a bird at first and then slipping into a four-legged form to see the native flora and fauna up close. She came across the deer a little while before and became one, trying to convince the others that she belonged. They could smell that she didn't, her rubber scent making them skittish, although by the time the stranger appears they'd calmed a little and she joined them in shying away at first.

Gemini watches him from the corner of her eye, pegging the man as another passenger, and when he speaks she just can't help herself.]

I'm afraid none of us speak Polish.

[Her deer mouth didn't move and she's still pretending to graze. Wasn't this deer that spoke.]

[Lost in thought as he had been, it's still a shock to hear something talk back. That had been the furthest thing from his mind. He goes rigid and stands up, scrutinising the deer with narrowed eyes.]

Who's there?

[Chew chew chew. Nothing to see here just a normal if slightly big deer, albeit one with absolutely no metal in its body whatsoever. Not even iron in the blood, odd huh?

Gemini's smirking inwardly, rather enjoying the stranger's surprise, trying to throw her voice a little so he can't pinpoint which deer it's coming from.]

Isn't 'knock knock' supposed to go first?

[He scans the field again, flexing his fingers warily. If this was a spirit or some kind of magical being, he wasn't going to fare well in a fight. It could however just be someone getting their kicks. He crosses his arms, addressing the deer. There's nothing else to focus on, unless he wants to start talking to the trees.]

I'm not much of a joker. I don't think I need to be, either; you're enjoying yourself enough.

[Her voice is reproachful although she does laugh, finally abandoning her act although not yet the form and turning to face him with an odd looking animal smile.]

Besides I got here first.

[A shapeshifter. His gaze flicks over her briefly as she takes on her humanoid form. If he's surprised, he doesn't show it. It doesn't have the same scale-quality that Mystique employs when shifting - and changing into animals is a rarer talent. The older Mystique could turn into a wolf, he knows.]

So it would seem. Did I interrupt something important? [The last is a bit dry; there's an entire planet here, and staking a claim on some small meadow seems a bit pointless.]

[ peggy stands at the edge of the forest -- hands on her hips, surveying the tree-line. a possibility occurs to her: a small expedition, perhaps prompting some of the avengers to venture deeper into the woods. silently, she starts composing a mental list of needed supplies.

but she's caught up in a distraction when, not far down the woods' edge, she witnesses erik bidding scrap metal up from the mossy ground. it's remarkable enough to draw her closer. ] You're from the Heron, aren't you?

[ they'd spoken only briefly, but peggy certainly took note. ]

[He'd been too engrossed in the panel in his hands - or at least it might have been a panel once, too broken up and rusted now to be much of anything - to notice Peggy at first. When her voice rings out, he looks around without recognition. Ten years away has left him lacking when it comes to remembering his more fleeting encounters.

He nods in response to her question, lowering the piece of metal to his side.] I am. Erik Lehnsherr.

Peggy Carter. [ she tries to watch his eyes above all else -- but her fascination with his abilities is certainly a compelling reason to look elsewhere. luckily, she's a lady of discipline. ] I'm from the Starstruck, but I'm -- friends, let's say, with your captain.

[ it's clearly a little more complicated than that, but she owns the awkwardness right off the bat. ]

Winter? [He didn't know much about the man's circle beyond Charles and Wrath, but he supposes it's not that surprising that he would have other friends. Even if the Heron tends to be full of the less sociable people in the Fleet. Erik nods, acknowledgement and greeting both.]

Are you down here for the first time?

[mucked]

I popped out earlier with some associates. We had a look down the tree-line. Nothing too invasive -- [ not yet. ] So, no, it isn't my first time. It was my first time alone, however.

[ until she struck up a conversation with him. ]

There doesn't appear to be anything in the way of civilisation here.

[ There's no way for Hermione to avoid the forests, really, not when she feels so alive under the watch of the trees; it's as if her magic is singing a little, and she can reach out for it and feel a kind of warmth and rejuvenation that she hadn't felt since she activated her shard in the Drabwurld. Sometimes it feels a little like she can reach inside and unlock that place inside of her again, but when she tries all she's given is the hollow reminder of what the Atroma took away from her when she arrived here.

She's in a bit of a daze when she comes across Erik, and her expression softens as she moves up to walk to his side, standing there without pause. Turning her attention back to him, ignoring the prickle of things on the edge of her senses, she frowns at the metal near his hands. ]

Is there something in there?

[exothermia]

[He glances at Hermione as she approaches, but stays quiet until she speaks. A couple of screws and a sliver of broken steel hover above his palm, spoils from the earth.]

Nothing bigger than this. I've found a few scattered pieces like these, but never anything more substantial.

That's weird.

[ She frowns, tilting her head and glancing out over at the forests. Taking a deep breath, she takes a step forward before she purses her lips. ]

I tried exploring a little, but I keep getting lost and this planet... It's doing something with my magic. I'm not sure how I feel just yet. Does your mutation feel different?

[exothermia]

[Hermione isn't the first to mention this sensation to him. Increasingly he wonders if he does feel something, but he's rational enough to know he's overthinking it. He knows his powers. Nothing about them has changed.]

No. Nothing has changed for me. Other people have mentioned strange feelings about this place, though.

[brainiest]

[ She frowns, considering for a moment, before she shakes her head. There's a part of her that is a little cautious, but the way it makes her magic feel warm, makes her feel more alive than she's felt in a while... She can't help but be excited. It's nothing like anything she felt in the Drabwurld, nothing malicious anyway, so she wants to give into the urge. ]

Maybe it's not to do with mutation? I'm a witch, not a mutant, so it might come back to that rather than anyone with unique powers.

Not entirely. Charles feels something strange about the place as well. [Honestly, it's odd to be the one who doesn't have the impression of being watched or changed.]

[Erik's visits to the planet no longer go anywhere near as far as the wrecked ship. He'd had quite enough of that, and it still gives him lingering nightmares. No, he's satisfied keeping to the edges of the forests that the Fleet lands near, and it suits his purposes just fine.

Right now, he's in the process of harvesting seeds from a nut bush that Hank said was clean. He didn't come alone, either.]

How are the plants in your own room going?

[crouched nearby with knife in hand, Tempest is watching for now; she has plenty of her own plants in her room, plus seeds that Erik had gotten for her from his trip further into the forest. She doesn't need to add to her garden, but - ]

They are doing very well, the spoiled little things. [she says, as if she's talking about a couple of children, rather than flora] They have taken over my room.

You say that as though that wasn't your intention.

[He drops another handful of nuts into his bag, casting her an unconvinced look.]

I never said that was my intention, but it was certainly not a complaint.

[completely different. She hums a little, reaching out to brush her fingers over the plant Erik was cutting from]
