[ Calibration Rooms ]
( for A-M characters )

Before you post your toplevel comment, please:
1. Check the first letter of your character's name as its written in our tags. A-M names comment here, and N-Z names go to the other post.
2. Make a note in your comment if anything especially triggering or graphic might show up in the Calibration. If you're not sure if something's worth noting or not, we suggest listing it anyway, just to err on the side of caution.
3. Put your character's name (it can be shortened or different from the tag, this time) in the subject of your comment. This will help visitors find you easily, and help us update the list below.
4. Post your comment! It's fine if everyone's Calibrations end up looking and reading very different from one another. As long as you're having fun and following our guidelines, you're good to go. :)
5. If you have any questions or concerns during Calibrations, you are welcome to send them towards the mod team at any time, as always.

    tempredmental: (Red Protective Bubble)

[As Kolivan got closer, he'd feel a strange energy. It felt like a presence reaching out to him, but also playing coy and hard to get. The glow around him grew and soon he was in the hangar bay of Sendak's ship. Hovering in a protective red particle barrier, the Red Lion waited, inactive, held in place with massive braces and cables. No one seemed to know how to bring down the barrier.

Suddenly, the doors opened and Keith, fresh from Earth, wearing his Red Paladin armor, came running into the room.]

Bingo. Let's get out of here. Open up.

[Keith stepped up to the barrier and placed his hand on it. Nothing happened.]

It's me. Keith. Your buddy. [Still nothing.] It's me! Keeeeeeiiiiith, your—I. AM. YOUR. PALADIN!

[Red stayed firmly sealed up... like she was mocking him.

After a moment, Kolivan, having been feeling Keith's building frustration this whole time, felt a suddenly sheepish idea of knocking on the barrier, like someone had previously suggested it, and he'd thought it was dumb. He brought his hand up and gave a small knock. Before any response could potentially happen, though, the doors to the hangar opened again and a bunch of sentries ran in. Keith gave a mental curse, activating his shield as he took cover from the weapons fire as best he could.]

I'm bonding with you! Hey! Come on! We're connected!

[Completely ignored by Red once again. Keith clenched his teeth for a moment, and then activated his bayard, jumping up and charging at the sentries.]

    You're not getting this lion!

[Keith did his best against them, but he was still new to the whole Paladin thing. His fighting skills from home hadn't prepared him for something on this level, and he was soon in trouble. One of the blasts got through, and Keith barely got his shield up in time to block, but he was knocked back into the console that controls the doors. His shield still in place, he looked at the control, and then at the doors. He clearly wouldn't have known that Galra tech only worked for Galra and he didn't yet know he was part Galra himself, but he slammed his hand down on that control anyway. The doors opened to the vacuum of space and the sentries were sucked out. Keith clung to the console, grunting with the effort, until he was knocked loose by flying debris.

Suddenly, he was flying through space, untethered in the middle of a battle between the battlecruiser and the Blue and Yellow Lions. He was scared... very scared... Even his Garrison training, incomplete as it was from being kicked out, hadn't truly given him the experience he needed to be suddenly getting sucked out into space like that. It was one thing to know what one should do, but it was another to suddenly find oneself in the actual life-threatening situation... especially in the middle of a firefight of three massive space vehicles.

And then... she was there. With lightning speed characteristic of just her, Red swooped in, opening her jaws and taking Keith out of the battle. Despite her speed, she still managed to grab him gently enough to protect him and keep him from being injured. There was a sudden feeling of warmth and acceptance as Red seemed to thank Keith for saving her and defending her. As the seat slid into place and Keith grabbed the controls, he smirked.]

    Good kitty.

    Let's roll.

[Despite the effort, it was still a fond memory. Keith's relationship with Red was important. She helped him get through some difficult times and gave him a purpose. And for that, he was thankful. Having her choose Lance when Black decided it wanted Keith was good. Keith knew Red would be good for Lance. She'd help him grow. Keith had finally accepted Black's choice, but he would always have a fond place for Red and the family she helped him find.

Kolivan would find himself back in the mental plane, a warm fire where the glow had been, but feeling drawn back towards the center of the area he'd just left. There was more. Would he choose the isolated door with mixed feelings about something in the past or one of the colored stars?]

[He actually finds himself smirking and crossing his arms as he watches this unfold. Somehow he had a feeling this would be how Keith formed a bond with the Red Lion. It suits him and the way his attitude is. Honestly Kolivan wouldn't have him any other way.

Looking into the fire when he's back, he shakes his head then looks to the door. A few strides takes him to it and he touches the handle to open it.]

[Beyond the door is the inside of a rundown shack. There was a large bulletin board on the wall to Kolivan's right covered in diagrams, pictures, notes... all connected with colored strings. A few pictures stand out.

One is young Keith with young Shiro. They're both in Garrison uniforms, Shiro as of yet untouched by the Galra Empire. Behind them is a hoverspeeder, and they both look a little dusty.

The other is Team Voltron as Kolivan would remember from when he first arrived on the Castle of Lions.

The third is a very young Keith with another man. Keith resembled him a bit, showing that he was a blend of both parents in more than just that he looked like a human male version of his mother.]

[It's actually the last picture that catches his attention the most actually and it's that one that he reaches for to touch. What memory is this? Because he knows this to be Keith's father. He's seen Krolia's memories, after all.]

[The shack and Keith's father were also in his Trial vision, if Kolivan had seen that part...

And, as he touched the picture, the scene shifted. He was no longer in the shack. Keith, younger like in the picture, sat on a bed in a room full of beds. There was a sense of urgency in the room, and a lot of noise coming from a space below. Kolivan may not recognize what passes for an Earth fire department house, but that was where they were. Keith had been brought along so he wouldn't be alone while he dad answered another call that night.

Speaking of, his father, complete in his gear, approached.]

We're heading out. I'll be back soon, and then we can head home. Just like usual, okay?

[Keith looked angry. He had his legs pulled up and his arms wrapped around them, blocking out the world, especially his father.]

No. [His tone was sharp.] It's not okay. Why do you keep doing this?

Keith, you know this is my job.

[Someone called from downstairs that they needed to go. There was a sound of a large engine running.]

And what happens if you get hurt again? Or worse? It's bad enough Mom left. If something happens, I'm gonna be alone.

[Keith's dad visibly held back a sigh. They'd had this argument before.]

We'll talk about this later, Keith. [He stood up and left, running off to get to the waiting truck downstairs. Keith put his head down on his knees, hiding his face.

The memory glitched to morning. Keith had laid down at some point, still on top of the blankets, and fully dressed, and he was curled up on his side. There was a somber feel to the scene as someone else in the similar gear to what his father had been wearing entered. The man crouched next to the bed, a tired look on his face. It was quiet for a moment as he gently woke Keith and the conversation seemed muted, distant... like Keith's mind was holding back from watching it again.

Young Keith suddenly sat up, arguing and yelling at the man who was trying to talk to him. There was a quick and very emotional exchange before he finally just pulled the boy into a tight hug. Keith tried to fight back and push away, but he finally just broke down and cried...

There was another glitch, and they were in a cemetery. Keith stood alone at a headstone, visibly holding back the powerful emotions he was feeling. He refused to talk to anyone around him. When it faded this time, Kolivan was back in the shack.]

[The death of his father. He finds himself less surprised by the anger that Keith always seems to hold in him. Even if he has come a long way. He's seen that growth in him.

Sighing, he looks around again. And he touches the picture with Shiro.]

[Reuniting with his mother had helped with that...

The next picture brought Kolivan to a vast desert. There were two hoverspeeders in the distance, racing each other as they skimmed over the ground and left clouds of dust in their wake. Shiro was in the lead with Keith following. Shiro was clearly challenging Keith to keep up, navigating through difficult canyons and ravines as if he was testing Keith's skill and discipline. Keith kept up easily as they jumped a ravine, landing effortlessly and perhaps even a little smoother than Shiro on a narrow rocky ledge on the opposite side. They both banked hard to the left as they landed, avoiding slamming full-on into the rock wall.

The race continued, leaving Kolivan with a sense of exhilaration from both pilots, the adrenaline junkies they were...

The scenery flattened out again, opening wide just before the two approached a cliff. Shiro pushed the accelerator, leaping off the cliff and tipping down into a nosedive. Keith slid to a stop just short of going over, watching in shock as Shiro cranked the handle, shifted hard, and forced the nose of the speeder to pull up. He barely skimmed the ground as he took off.

Keith lifted the goggles from his face, staring at the trail of dusk Shiro left behind in awe.

The memory shifted to later when Keith finally caught up to where Shiro had stopped. It was a quiet moment between them.]

    How did you do that?

[Shiro explained that it was a matter of timing and feeling it out. Keith asked if he thought he was ready, and Shiro posed the question back to him. Keith smiled.]

I think I'll wait a bit and practice what I already know.

[It was one of the few times Keith backed down and didn't try to take more than he could handle. Shiro was Keith's stability and a calming influence on him... which he needed, being angry at the world like he was after being left as an orphan with a missing mother and a dead father.

Which was also where the conversation slowly turned, Shiro asking Keith about him growing up out in the desert, and Keith admitting that it had just been the two of them alone until his father died on the job trying to save people from a fire.]

They told him not to go back in, but he just wouldn't listen to anyone.

[Shiro seemed to hesitate for a just tiny moment out of reverence for the subject, but then he managed a small smirk as he attempted to lighten things up.]

Sounds like someone else I know.

[That got Keith's attention, and he blinked. Was he actually more like his dad than he realized? Was that a good thing or a bad thing? Keith wasn't sure how he felt about that, but his thoughts were cut off when Shiro suddenly flinched and gripped his right wrist. He pressed a button on a bracelet-like device he was wearing before quickly pulling down his sleeve.]

    What is that?

[Shiro dismissed the question, reassuring Keith it was nothing and everything was fine before climbing back up on his own speeder. He said they should head back as it was getting dark.

Keith frowned a little and the memory faded.

This time, Kolivan wasn't alone in the shack. Keith was sitting quietly on the couch under the main window.]

    [personal profile] knowledgeordeath 2019-02-04 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I was wondering when you would appear.

[It always seems if they don't appear right away then they will eventually.

He turns to face Keith, looking down at him to study his expression. He can't help but to be mildly curious about his reactions after some of the things he's seen.]
    tempredmental: (Listening Intently)

    [personal profile] tempredmental 2019-02-04 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
[Keith lifted his eyes to look at Kolivan and huffed a small chuckle through his nose in response. It wasn't exactly a happy sound, and the tiny smile he managed didn't meet his eyes.]

Yeah... like they say, 'mileage may vary'.

[He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees as he clasped his hands. He wasn't sure what to say, honestly, so he hesitated.]

    Well?

[There was certainly more that Kolivan could probably dig up if he wanted to go looking at the last picture, or to go back outside and poke at the multi-colored stars.]
    knowledgeordeath: (Listening carefully)

    [personal profile] knowledgeordeath 2019-02-07 01:30 pm (UTC)(link)
[Of course he studies him a little while, noting his reaction to all of this. If that is all he has to say then he supposes he's meant to continue.

So he touches the last picture.]
    tempredmental: (Mind Map)

    [personal profile] tempredmental 2019-02-07 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
[At first, it was like the dream never shifted. Kolivan was still in the shack. But there was something different about the bulletin board. Instead of pictures of memories, it was covered in what looked like research... maps, star charts, diagrams, photos of rock carvings and scenery, notes written on post-its and stuck all over the board in various spots. Things were held in place by pushpins and some were tied together with colored string.

The largest map took up the center of the board, and there were concentric circles in the middle with a few circled X marks around one particular spot. There was writing on the map said, "Energy Source!" and "Triangulate". Then... a voice... Shiro's voice.]

What have you been working on?

[Turning away from the board, he'd see Team Voltron gathered in the small room.]

I can't explain it, really. After getting booted from the Garrison, I was kinda... lost and... felt myself drawn out to this place. It's like something... some energy, was telling me to search.

    For what?

Well, I didn't really know at the time... until I stumbled across this area. [Keith pointed out an area on the board, right where it said "Energy Source!".] It's an outcropping of giant boulders with caves covered in these ancient markings. Each tells a slightly different story about a blue lion, but they all share clues leading to some event, some arrival happening last night. [He lowered his arm and looked back at Shiro.] Then you showed up.

[After a beat, Shiro turned to Hunk, Pidge, and Lance.]

... I should... thank you all for getting me out. Lance, right?

[Shiro reached out to Lance to shake hands. Lance hesitated, almost nervous, but then gripped it in return. Shiro then did the same towards Pidge and Hunk. Pidge was the one to respond.]

The nervous guy's Hunk. I'm Pidge. So, did anyone else from your crew make it out?

I'm not sure. I remember the mission and being captured. After that, it's just bits and pieces.

Yeah, sorry to interrupt, but back to the aliens. Where are they now? Are they coming? Are they coming for all of us? Like where are they at this very moment?

I can't really put it together. I-I remember the word "Voltron". It's some kind of weapon they're looking for, but I don't know why. Whatever it is, I think we need to find it before they do.

Well last night, I was rummaging through Pidge's stuff, and I found this picture. Look it's his girlfriend.

[Hunk showed everyone a picture of what looked like Pidge posing with a girl. Pidge snatched the photo back.]

Hey, gimme that! What were you doing in my stuff?

I wa—I was looking for a candy bar. But then, I started reading his diary.

[Hunk pulled out Pidge's diary. Pidge snatched that back, too, just as fast.]

WHAT?! [She quickly flipped through the pages as if looking for damage.]

And I noticed that the repeating series of numbers the aliens are searching for looks a lot like a fraunhofer line.

    Frown... who?

It's a number describing the emission spectrum of an element, only this element doesn't exist on Earth. I thought it might be this Voltron, and I think I can build a machine to look for it, kinda like a Voltron Geiger Counter.

    Hunk, you big, gassy genius!

It's pretty fascinating, really. Th-The wavelength looks like this.

[Hunk pulled out a graph of the wavelength that he had apparently drawn up while looking at the wavelength numbers the previous night. Keith grabbed it from him.]

    Give me that.

[Keith studied it for a moment, and then looked up at his board. He slowly brought it up, matching the wavelength's appearance to an array of boulders he had seen and had a photo of.

The memory faded, focusing on that photo until it became real. Kolivan would find himself outside, staring at the actual boulders that had been in the photo.]

... OK. I admit it. This is super freaky.

[Hunk was messing around with some sort of device he was holding, with Pidge holding a dish above her head and trying to peer over, or rather, around his shoulder. She was too short to see over his much larger bulk.]

    I'm getting a reading.

[Hunk used the device to locate a cave with ancient carvings inside.]

    What are these?

These are the lion carvings I was telling you about. They're everywhere around here.

[Lance approached a carving and wiped his hand across it to clear away some dust and cobwebs. Suddenly, they all started the glow... the entire cave.]

Whoa... Whoa! [He backed up towards the group.]

    They've never done that before.

[The ground beneath them lit up in a circle, and then collapsed. The team fell through, carried along a water slide until they were shot out into a cavern, landing in a shallow pool of water several yards below. Lance was the first to look up and see the Blue Lion inside a force field.]

    They are everywhere.

Is this it? Is this the Voltron? [One by one, they each slowly got up. Keith was the first to his feet.]

    It... must be.

This is what's been causing all this crazy energy out here. [Keith started jogging forward towards the Blue Lion, the rest of the team slowly following behind.] Looks like there's a force field around it.

Does anyone else get the feeling this is staring at them?

[Lance paced side to side as they walked, staring at the Lion.]

    Hmm... No.

Yeah. The eyes are totally following me.

[Keith ran up to the force field and put his hands on it with no reaction.]

I wonder how we get through this.

[He moved his hands around, like he was looking for a spot that would trigger it to open.]

Maybe you just have to knock.

[Kolivan might remember Keith's attempt at knocking on Red's forcefield in Sendak's cargo bay. Lance literally knocked on the force field and it reacted, dissipating and igniting the area around them in blue. Suddenly, they were overwhelmed by a vision of Voltron forming from the five Lions in their minds. When it cleared, they were in collective shock, Hunk and Pidge actually sitting on the ground.]

Uh, did everyone just see that?

Voltron is a robot! Voltron is a huge, huge, awesome robot!

And this thing is only one part of it! I wonder where the rest of them are.

This is what they're looking for.

    Incredible.

[The Blue Lion suddenly lowered its head and opened its mouth to allow them inside, eliciting nervous whining from Hunk and Pidge. Lance hesitated, but the smirked before entering. Keith glanced at Shiro and followed him inside, the other trailing behind.

Inside the cockpit, Lance was looking at the screens that had activated once he sat down.]

    Heheh! All right! Very nice!

OK guys, I-I feel the need to point out, just so that we're all, y'know, aware: We are in some kind of futuristic alien cat head right now.

[As they all looked at Hunk talking about cat heads, Lance tensed up suddenly in the chair.]

Whoa, did you guys just hear that?

    Hear what?

I-I think it's talking to me. Hmm... Um...

[Lance tapped a few controls and the Blue Lion stood up and roared. Hunk and Pidge scream.]

OK. Got it. Now let's try this.

[Lance shoved hard on the control sticks, and the team clinged to the chair and Lance for dear life as the Blue Lion burst through the rock wall of the cavern into open sky. They rolled and spun and hovered, and almost danced through the air. Everyone was hanging on, and Pidge and Hunk were screaming. Finally, Keith couldn't take it anymore.]

YOU ARE. THE WORST. PILOT. EVER.

[As it faded, they were back in the starscape now, having left the shack and the only memories that were there behind. They stood among the colored stars, all familiar shades to Kolivan... pink, orange, yellow, blue, green, red, various shades of purple from light to dark and pinkish to bluish, and each color had dim and bright stars, as well as some in between.

The door was behind them again, but it had a sense of ending... like it was Kolivan's way out of the dream.

    Keith watched him.]

Part of me wants to know what you're thinking... but, I don't know if I want to ask.

When you look at these pictures in this room what do you think about?

[It's not really a sharing of his thoughts but the question has been asked all the same as he looks over at Keith. He's...curious. To say the least. Wanting to know what his answer will be in this instance. Perhaps then he will have his thoughts solidified enough to tell him exactly what he's thinking about all that he's seen here.]
tempredmental: (Uh Well I Guess I'm Okay)

    [personal profile] tempredmental 2019-02-08 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
[Keith looked back at the door for a moment, then around at the rest of the space they were in.]

This isn't exactly how my mind is all the time. It's just for while we're here. I'm not sure why it comes up like this. Last time we went through this, it was just the house and the land around it.

[If that's what Kolivan was asking about... but...]

For me, I see what everyone else sees. The objects and pictures... stuff that draws attention... It's guiding people to see certain things. I don't have to interact with them because I know what's there.

Though, it does sometimes change for different people. Sometimes, it can be the same object presented in a different way, or a different object altogether. I guess it depends on how I feel about the person who's looking.
    knowledgeordeath: (What was that...)

    [personal profile] knowledgeordeath 2019-02-08 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
    [The frown he wears deepens.]

That is not what was asked and you are aware of this, Keith.
    tempredmental: (Worried About the Journey)

    [personal profile] tempredmental 2019-02-08 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
    [Keith sighed.]

Why does it matter? They're pictures. I don't actually have pictures like those. They're not real. They're just representations of memories here. Different milestones in my life, I guess.

Each one had a big impact on where my life is now. It's hard not to think about what they represent. Each one was important for a different reason. Same thing with the colored stars, or the fire.

This place, though? It's my past. I can't change any of it. What happened, happened. Do I wish that my dad hadn't tried to be the hero? Sure. Am I glad I met Shiro? Absolutely... more than anything. Am I glad we found the Blue Lion that day? Definitely.

I'm okay with how things have gone. It wasn't all great, and it wasn't easy, but I've learned to live with that.

[Again, he knew he was sort of dodging the question without giving a direct answer for the pictures. He sighed. Articulating his thoughts directly had never been a strong point for Keith. He looked at the door again, floating there in space.]

Racing Shiro in the desert was a good day. For that moment, we were both able to just forget everything else that was troubling us. I didn't know it, yet, but Shiro was sick. The two of us out there, just going fast, focusing completely on the moment, took him away from that. For me, it took me away from the fact that I was struggling after the loss of my dad. I didn't have to think about how the world seemed to hate me.

Losing my dad was... hard. I hated him for a long time after that, because I blamed him for it. He went into that building, knowing how dangerous it was, to save someone else's family. And, in the end, he left his own family behind. I resented that. But, I know that's just who he was. He put others' lives above his own all the time. And, as much as I hated to admit it, he was definitely a hero.

And when I think about finding the Blue Lion... that was the first step for me on a long journey that helped me find myself and my family. I don't know where I'd be now if we hadn't taken off that day, but I don't think it would be a good place. So, I'm grateful we found it. Yeah, it's been hard, and I've been through a lot, but I'm better now than I was.

    .....

Is that what you were asking?
knowledgeordeath: (What did I tell you not to do?)

    [personal profile] knowledgeordeath 2019-02-12 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
[He listens to him and then he nods. That is what he wanted to hear. The honest expression of his feelings. How he feels about each of these things. Some memories are easier than others but sharing is not always something that someone wants.

He turns to head towards the door, pausing a moment.]

I am glad I was able to see what I saw.

[And he doesn't say more. He goes to open the door to leave. As far as he's concerned, he's seen enough.]
    tempredmental: (You What?)

    [personal profile] tempredmental 2019-02-25 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
[That left Keith confused for a moment, but he didn't get the chance to question it... as soon as Kolivan opened the door again, the dream faded into nothing... ending the moment.]
