[ Jim would've probably touched it anyway, but right now that pull he feels is even stronger, impossible to resist. Jim doesn't just want to touch it, he wants to be able to pick it up, know he has what he takes to lift its weight.

His fingers brush near the base, then slowly curl around the handle, grip tightening as he tries to lift it up from the ground. ]

[ Mjolnir. It feels imposing, like thunderclouds above your head. Everything feels narrowed to you and this singular object, this force of nature. You are caught in its vortex and an overwhelming need to prove yourself. Can you lift it? Dare you try? ]

[ Mjolnir doesn't seem to budge. The lights around you dim, leaving nothing else but the dark and stars all around you. They sing to you, the song of the universe, but you can only hear it in your soul. your fingers strain but it will not budge.

In fact, you seem to be sinking a little. Your every insecurity is screaming at you in your head, you can't do it, you can't lift it, no one can lift it, you're not worthy.

will you keep trying? ]

[ Thing is, Jim is too stubborn for his own good, and too curious at times too. He knows it's supposed to be nearly impossible to lift the hammer, but like hell he's not going to give it his best try before giving up.

So even despite the words echoing in his head, trying to weaken his resolve, he wraps his fingers tighter, and pulls harder, unaware that the hammer itself might just end up sinking him along with it. ]

[ and it . . . budges. only a little, but it is enough to bring a change to the room. the light dims until everything is pitch black. except.

except the stars come alive. bright sparks that spin wildly to create the scenes you see before you. they seem to form images out of starlight, akin to the flicker of a camera reel, but the light, the light sinks into your skin like a breath of fresh air. electrifying and so full of . . .

. . . full of . . .

. . . love. it's overwhelming, this singular thought, free of all doubt, all pain, all suffering. untinged, untouched, pure.

eventually, the light comes back to the observatory. ]

[ The stars shift and move all around him, and Jim's eyes widen at the scene playing out before him. He feels that warmth, that love as though it's being poured straight into him, all over him, making him feel warm and happy and so full of love. Even if that love isn't meant for him.

His breath stutters when the observatory comes back into view, and he lets go of the hammer, stumbling slightly for the few seconds it takes him to regain his balance.

Then he starts walking around the room again, glancing at the hammer one last time before he focuses on finding Loki now. ]

[ Loki seems a little … different. Someone seems to have taken a brush to his face, because there are swathes of blue in a zig-zag pattern and one of his eyes seem to be a dark, blood red. His form seems to flicker on and off as if he’s not truly there and his voice tends to distort, like radio static. When you step onto the bridge, you can hear the siren song of the V̵̙͓̦̺͆͗̋ͩ̒ͅo͓͓̹͎̪ͪ͂ͧ̓ͨ̋͞i̭͎̹͍ͤ͊̆d͏͓͔̭̜͚, calling for your oblivion.

Loki cocks his head when Jim approaches. ]

Careful.

[ The static is strange. Loki's appearance, not so much. He has seen him completely blue before, eyes blood red, still remembers Loki's warning that Jim shouldn't touch him. It didn't scare him before, doesn't scare him now.

Everything else scares him, though. Worries him. He steps up close to the edge, until he's standing right beside Loki. He can't help a brief glance down, sucking in a soft breath, then his eyes find Loki's face. ]

Should be telling you the same thing.

I won't fall.

[ not anymore. the temptation may linger, may sink its claws in him, but he'll no longer follow its calling. but it remains here, ever present. ]

But others might.

[ There's something magnetic about it, something that keeps drawing Jim's gaze despite his better judgment. It very much reminds Jim of one of the memories he saw before. ]

I won't, either. If you're worried about me. [ He glances back down. ] What is it? Where does it go?

It is the space between the stars, the ugly dark. Where no light touches. I fell through there, long ago. I lost all meaning of time and space.

[ he rolls his shoulders. ]

It opened my eyes. It showed me how small I was, how small we all were.

Wouldn't need to fall into a black hole to learn that.

[ Maybe it's just... a different sort of perspective, a different way to see life. Jim can't begin to guess what kind of person Loki was before he met him, after all. ]

How did you get out? Wouldn't something like this... you know, kill you?

I had assumed it would.

[ he looks down. if jim follows his gaze, he'll see that at the end of the broken bridge, three figures are there. odin, thor and loki, holding onto a slim piece of metal, a spear. he seems to be saying something but it's hard to make out but you can hear odin's voice clear as day.

"No, Loki"

and loki — loki lets go. the vision fades soon after thor's cries. ]

It was unfortunate that I survived.

[ There's a startle in his chest when Loki lets go. He nearly reaches out before he reminds himself that it's just a memory, and he's too far away to stop him anyway. It takes a moment for him to compose himself again, his eyes finding Loki's. ]

I'll have to disagree, if it's all the same to you.

It is within your right.

[ but it's hard to shake off. unfortunate. everything about his existence has been unfortunate and sometimes, loki uses that to fuel his life, to continue living. but lately, it's been hard. very hard. ]

[ Jim understands that there's a lot to Loki's experiences that he really can't speak of. Maybe he did have an unfortunate life. But he still believes it's not unfortunate that he survived.

Even if that may be for a purely selfish reason, which is that Jim got to meet him. ]

Will you come with me? [ He rests a hand on Loki's elbow. ] Inside. Please.

[ loki cocks his head curiously before shifting away from the edge. ]

There is no need for concern. I will not fall again.

[ Jim still doesn't look too sure. He struggles not to let his eyes flicker to the edge, and beyond it. ]

I'm still concerned. I don't want to leave here without you.

[ a flicker of a smile passes through his face. ]

Of course.

[ they return to the observatory. the stars continue to glitter in the expanse. ]

I'm sure you have questions.

Questions about what? This place? Your mind?

[ He looks around, marveling at the beauty of it, even if, at the same time, it feels incredibly quiet, incredibly empty. ]

I only want to know what you're willing to share. About yourself, or your experiences. I've already poked into some of your memories, which... I'm sorry, for the record. I'll admit, I definitely meant to pry.

[ loki shrugs, nonchalant. he seems very at ease, which is unusual for him. ]

It does not bother me. What is important is kept safe under Mjolnir. The rest are simply old narratives, lessons and landmarks.

[ His eyes drift to the hammer in the middle of the room, and he nods. ]

I... saw something there, too. I mean, I didn't manage to lift it up completely, but it did nudge.

[ loki nods. ]

Mjolnir does not move for just anyone. It takes true worth to make it move.

[ Jim gasps, a little too theatrical. ] You mean I'm not worthy?

[ Joking aside, however, he doesn't move to try again. What's underneath the hammer is important, but it's also Loki's. Some things he'd rather have Loki share when he's ready to. ]

Hey, did I ever tell you that your brother looks just like my dad did?

[ loki flicks his fingers against jim's cheek for that. ]

You did not. How does he resemble your father?
