[Okay, must not be a problem if he's laughing about it. As long as Taako isn't going to get in trouble, he's not going to police his language then.]

Magic is the greatest. One day I'm going to be the most powerful sorcerer there is, you can bet on it. I know I'm small right now but I grew a whole inch last year!

[He is going to be so fucking embarrassed when this is all over.]

No one will care if I'm rich or poor if I have magic.

[He doesn't mean to snort in amusement, but he totally just did. It's hilarious seeing Belthazar talk about being a sorcerer when the one he knows already is. It reminds him of meeting Loki as a kid - all curiosity about magic he should have already known.]

Yeah? A whole inch, huh? What a growth spurt.

[Is it patronizing? Maybe a little, but it's also hilarious when he thinks of how short Belthazar is in comparison to Taako.]

So? What school of magic are you gonna specialize in?

[He wrinkles his nose and squints his big blue eyes, and then he sticks his tongue out again.]

All of them! The grand archmage is supposed to be an expert at every school of magic.

Buuuuut... my favorite is arcane magic. I'm good at charms and shields.

[Enchantment and Abjuration then, makes sense. He'd mentioned potions once, too. That grand archmage thing though?

Taako raises an eyebrow.]

You aiming to be the lord of all nerds of magic, huh?

[He holds up his finger.]

And the head of the greatest magical society in all of recorded history, the Kirin Tor! I guess that would make me the head of their floating city, too, but I just want to prove that a commoner can be as powerful a mage as someone with a noble bloodline.

Oh, so just the Lord, then? Mkay, I mean, I guess if administration's your thing, that could be cool? Sounds like a shitload of work though.

[Way more than Taako ever wanted to do. He just wanted to be comfortable, whether that meant in an inn or in a palace.]

Are mages in your--this world only inherited by blood?

There's no shame in working hard. As long as no one's taking advantage of you, that is.

[Haha.]

Not really. A lot of people have magic in some way or another. Some people are better with the Light, some people talk to the elements, and some people blow things up.

[So elegant.]

But in Silvermoon, status is everything. To be noble means having an ancient bloodline, and the oldest families can be traced to ten thousand years ago when we became separate from night elves.

Mmm, hard pass on that hard work thing.

[If he can get away with doing the bare minimum of work, he will. But he listens to Belth's explanation and nods. Sounds about right, not quite what he knows, but he was a peasant outcast so the whole world of nobles, aristocracy, and formal schooling? Out of his wheelhouse.]

So you're gonna upset the whole balance and fuck up the world order, huh? Power to you, kid.

I like working hard. I don't mind doing it so you don't have to. [That's probably not true when he's older, but he's so eager to help...]

Mm-hmm. I think if Silvermoon can change its ways, then we won't need to keep fighting the humans.

I met the human prince once and he was nice. We even liked the same books. But... his father was big and scary, even though he tried to help me.

What do you think of humans?

[Taako snickers as Belthazar talks about wanting to do the hard work. He's going to have to remember that because he's going to make him do all of it once they're back in their normal states of being. He's not going to let Belthazar squirrel out of this sweet little deal.]

Done-zo. You can do all my hard work for me then. Deal struck, legally binding.

[But that's not nearly as important as what Belthazar says next. Fighting the humans? That just doesn't compute to Taako. He can't remember or recall ever hearing about a war between the humans and elves and, for once, he's glad they're from different worlds. He's pretty sure he wouldn't have survived without the human caravans and circuses that he attached himself to in his youth. They often relied upon his elvish beauty to draw customers to food stalls or bolster less popular carnival games. He hadn't exactly enjoyed it, but it'd paid the bills and kept him on the caravans, meaning he had another night of safety and another night of food in his belly.]

Uh, well, that's the thing, pumpkin, I don't- I don't think we have the same problems with humans that you do. I mean, it didn't really matter all that much, y'know, the whole "different races" thing. I work with a half-orc and a dragonborn, and I'm pretty sure that Bradson nerd is actually a full orc, so? We just didn't care. Human or elf or whatever. No biggie.

But only if you pay me! Your cooking's really good, so you can just feed me.

Oh, [he murmurs, his eyes widening.] You've met a half-orc? Ah, but-- what's a dragonborn? Wait, so humans and orcs never fought a big war on your world? What about trolls? Or tauren?

[Kid, if he can get free labor for food? Hell yeah he's going to do it and so he holds his hand out to give Belthazar a little shake.

Do deals made within a person's mindscape with a projected image of their child-selves still hold legal weight in the waking world with their adult selves??? Taako is going to have to ask someone.]

Deal - work for food. You're getting the sweeter deal out of this, but I can suffer the loss.

[Once the handshake is done, he'll answer Belth's questions with a shrug.]

Dragonborn're people whose ancestors got it busy with a dragon somehow? I dunno, they're humanoid dragons. And there were probably wars? Like a long time ago? Who knows. Some orcs like to be big ol'd dicks and go marauding, but most are just kinda chill to do whatever. The fuck is a tauren? Are you just saying random shit to trick me now?

[Belth giggles. He's a huge fan of Taako's cooking so he's fine with this.]

Dragons and humans don't have kids though. ... I think. Halfbreeds of anything are really rare since everyone kept to themselves until the orcs came through the Dark Portal.

Tauren are bull people who like nature. You don't have those?

[Taako shrugs. People didn't have to make a baby to mix their blood with another species - there were spells and rituals for that. Sometimes it came as a curse. Sometimes as a boon. Sometimes it was because dragons could shapeshift and they got busy. There wasn't a lot of literature from that far back that explained how it all happened.]

No Dark Portals, no Tauren, nope. We have merfolk? And uh...the Tabaxi, they're cat people. The uh... The Aara...Aarakocra? They're bird people. But no bull people. I think.

[He isn't exactly a biologist though, so who knew.]

Guess there're more differences in our worlds than we thought, huh?
