dreams in digital
( for A-M characters )
Before you post your toplevel comment, please:
1. Check the first letter of your character's name as its written in our tags. A-M names comment here, and N-Z names go to the other post.
2. Make a note in your comment if anything especially triggering or graphic might show up in the Calibration. If you're not sure if something's worth noting or not, we suggest listing it anyway, just to err on the side of caution.
3. Put your character's name (it can be shortened or different from the tag, this time) in the subject of your comment. This will help visitors find you easily, and help us update the list below.
4. Post your comment! It's fine if everyone's Calibrations end up looking and reading very different from one another. As long as you're having fun and following our guidelines, you're good to go. :)
5. If you have any questions or concerns during Calibrations, you are welcome to send them towards the mod team at any time, as always.

[ He looked around and he sighed. That was a complicated question. ]
Yes... and no. At first, it bothered me a lot. It still does, but not as much. But on the other hand, I get to see a bit of my home again, even if it's just a dream. I suppose I've taken the memories as the price I pay.
[ A little shrug, because he wasn't sure how else to explain it, this give and take. He had weighed it all and that's just how it all settled for him. He dipped his head at Daryl. ]
You can touch. I don't mind. Just avoid the dark spots. Those... don't hold good things. Just a hunch.

[ he says easily, with a light shrug like it's no big deal. But really, any scene of his past that popped up would be a damn nightmare, he wouldn't want anyone having to see that.
For that matter, he's happier if folks don't know what he comes from. ]

It's kind of fun, sometimes, other people seeing my memories. I don't think people believe I've done what I've done until they've actually seen them. Some of the looks are pretty priceless.
[ He grinned widely, and that was actually true. Those memories were less personal, in a way. They were a large scale, shared event most of the time. And looking back, most of them were pretty fucking cool. In the moment they had been tense, but watching someone else view them could be pretty entertaining. ]

Stuff like this happen before?

About twice before, in the time I've been here. It's... not my favorite thing, to be sure, but you can either spend all your time hating it and trying to fight it, or just learn to roll with it. Some people don't even remember them. Others, like me, do. No idea why some do and don't though.
[ Wasn't that the theme of practically everything to do with Atroma though? ]

Got a favorite?
[ why the hell not. ]

[ Kirk looked at the display, thinking for a long moment. He had many favorites among many memories. It was hard to decide which he would want to show Daryl. He paced around the table slowly, but finally he settled on one of the planets, knowing what he wanted to show. He reached out, brushing it with his finger tips, the holo table buzzing with static, until a new image appeared: a younger Kirk, a little rounder in the face, a little less lined by tragedy and victory in equal measure.
The scene played, Kirk chuckling at points. While he was not entirely proud of the way in which he had won this particular test, he wasn't sorry for the point he was trying to make, for the trajectory it had set his life on. The scene ended, fizzing and flipping back to the rotating planets in their orbital dance. ]
That, by the way, is how I met my first officer for the first time. Though he ranked quite a bit higher than me at the time.

[ From Daryl that is a fairly neutral statement. ]

He wasn’t, at first. But he’s Vulcan. They don’t handle or show emotions the same way humans do - they value logic most of all.
Now he’s one of my best friends as well as my first officer.
