[ loki hums. ]

In those tapestries are the little truths. Regrets, in a manner of speaking.

What regrets could I have with you?

[It's so direct a statement, so earnest, that Thor honestly doesn't know what to say for a moment. He had been looking at the tapestries but whips his head around to stare at Loki instead, startled. His laugh is bewildered yet his smile is genuine.]

I'm sure you could come up with some if you tried.

[dothelokimotion]

Oh, probably.

[ but it wasn't that important. whatever regrets he may hold with thor, they don't last. they haven't changed him. and so, they are not put here with the tapestries, who still hold messages for loki to this day. ]

Don't tempt me though.

[rebuildyourruins]

I hardly need to.

[Though he says it in jest only. Loki is free and giving with his criticisms; Thor has no doubt he would hear about any issues he had given enough time. Though Thor has to wonder if Loki doesn't regret at least some things about how things ended at home. It's a sobering thought, and the smile fades a little from Thor's face.

He steps closer to Mjolnir, giving the pedestal and cracks stemming from it a critical look.]

And what of this?

[dothelokimotion]

[ loki raises an eyebrow. ]

You know what that is.

[ but he frowns slightly. ]

Everything that is important is safe-guarded by Mjolnir. Only those who deem me worthy can lift it.

[ what is unsaid is easy to pick up on: loki can't lift it himself. ]

[That just earns a grunt. Of course he knows what it is. The question is more what it's doing here. He pauses in the midst of scrutinising the shape of the hammerhead before straightening and staring at Loki, a frown settling over his face.]

You're in here alone normally.

[dothelokimotion]

[ loki nods. ]

Of course. Usually, I have stronger safeguards in here but they're not active at the moment.

[rebuildyourruins]

And what do you usually do with this, Loki?

[Mjolnir is taking centre stage here. If only those who think Loki is worthy can pick it up, there's a glaring question there about what happens in usual circumstances, when there's no one else around to try it.]

[dothelokimotion]

[ loki glances at it. ]

Whatever is important is kept safe. Untouched by doubt.

[rebuildyourruins]

[It's not much of an answer, but Thor thinks he can cobble one together out of it. And he does, judging by the way his eyebrows pull together in dissatisfaction.

Thor has always been more about action than words though. Turning back to Mjolnir he steps up to it and moves to grab the handle without hesitation.]

[dothelokimotion]

[ unlike the others, it doesn't simply budge but comes alive in thor's hand. it is enough to bring a change to the room. the light dims until everything is pitch black. the crackle of lightning fills the room, dimming the eveninglight glow of the observatory.

except the stars come alive. bright sparks that spin wildly to create the scenes you see before you. they seem to form images out of starlight, akin to the flicker of a camera reel, but the light, the light sinks into your skin like a breath of fresh air. electrifying and so full of . . .






. . . full of . . .





. . . love. it's overwhelming, this singular thought, free of all doubt, all pain, all suffering. untinged, untouched, pure.

eventually, the light comes back to the observatory. ]

[Even when the lights go out, Thor feels no fear. There can't be any, not with Mjolnir in his hand and lightning flaring around the room. Only it's not the security of his own power that lends him that surety this time. No, it's something else, something deeper. As the stars flare above and these moments, these memories brighten around him Thor already knows what he's being shown. He knows it but still finds himself unprepared for how it feels.

It's a shot straight to his heart. One he'll never forget or let go of.

Because this isn't something Loki would ever say in words. Thor would be hard-pressed to do the same in a way that got this sensation across, even if he feels it just as strongly himself. It's ... fortifying. Despite the knowledge of Loki's death and the empty space waiting when he goes home, Thor takes it to shore up his own self.

When the light returns Thor still has the hammer in his hand, though it hangs limp by his side. He turns to Loki, his oddly disjointed brother with the mismatched skin. There are tears running down his face but he's smiling like he hasn't done since before their return home.]

You call me sentimental, but I think you're just as bad, brother.

[dothelokimotion]

[ loki shrugs, even as he reaches out to wipe away the remains of thor's tears. ]

I never claimed otherwise.

[rebuildyourruins]

[Thor clasps Loki above the shoulder warmly, snorting with amusement.]

You like to give the impression though.

[Maybe that's what he means by 'kept safe'. Left unsaid. Like many things in Loki's life.]

[dothelokimotion]

[ loki huffs. ]

I won't deny that it is difficult to express and it grew harder over time. But that doesn't matter, as long as it's safe.

[ all his feelings, love, affection, the lasting good is unharmed. ]

Just don't confuse safe with secret. Though it wasn't much of one, even before.

[Thor's had his fears of course, his doubts and his hurts. In those years where Loki went mad, saying and doing things that made no sense and were only designed to wound, it had been difficult to see where the brother he knew had gone. If he was still there. But Thor had come to his own conclusions a while ago about how Loki felt about things, and had gladly been proven right.

This, monumental though it is, is only confirmation. Hefting the hammer again Thor returns it to its place on the pedestal.]

Sometimes things need the light of day to prosper.

[dothelokimotion]

Perhaps someday.

[ this place is still carrying some wounds. it'll be some time before loki is willing to let anything out. ]

[That's good enough for Thor. It's not as though he needs to know more. This is already a lot.]

Someday, then.

[ his lips curve despite himself. ]

The exit is past the tapestries.

[ the door slides open to reveal asgard at the other end of the bridge. of course, once you step on it and the further you go, the more your eyes droop and you slip away, only to wake up later. ]
