Am I...? [Nodding after a moment. Not everyone comes into or hosts these with the same level of awareness. It might be best to play along at least for a bit.] Yeah. First time. What are you doing?

[ First time is... a little weird, but hey. He can let it go. ]

Well, welcome to Alexandria.

[ He gives a little smile, then glances back toward the window. ]

I was just... watching. It's quiet today.

[ In fact, there are no other signs of life, but hey. This is all seemingly normal to him. ]

Thanks. [Aaron mentioned that place too.] I'm Kitty.

Watching for the... [They don't call them zombies.] the dead ones? [She's not sure that's it, but it's not zombies.]

[ He exhales a soft breath of a chuckle. ]

No -- there are people on watch, walls to keep them out.

Inside of them, we have lives here. Community. A future.

[ Well, some people do. Not so much him. Details. ]

Yeah? [Her expression softens further. Not that she walked in with it very hard in the first place, but there's something about that which strikes a cord. Not just that he's putting the effort in to comfort her, but what he's saying reminds her of points in her life when she felt like maybe for the first time in a long time she could have a future. And every time she started building it up some wave came along and knocked down her best-laid sandcastles.]

Futures are pretty dangerous things you know? You start hoping for things and then planning for things and making things happen. And then life has other ideas. Or death. [Pretty applicable in both their cases.]

Yeah...

[ His gaze falls then, a vague darkness creeping in on him... like he's been reminded of something. Should Kitty happen to turn at any point after this, she'll find a door has appeared in the corner behind her. Not that it's open, but it's... there, somewhat ominously.

After a moment, he takes a deep, steadying breath, and looks back up. ]

I think we have to try, though. Not just to survive, but to live... to build something. Because we might not be there to see it, but someone will.

[She looks at him thoughtfully. She can't really say anyone will back home. There was hope when she left, but Kurt's from a few years into her future and the only hope he had left was that maybe he could stop their world from devouring the rest of the multiverse. The bar had gotten very low. Still... How many times has she started over? How many times has she tried? How many times has she found something or someone to enjoy because what else is there?

This has gotten surprisingly real for a conversation she considered she was just playing along with. She steps back, turning slightly, except not toward that mysterious door she hasn't noticed yet. Instead, toward the dresser, lined with eclectic items.]

Something like Alexandria? [It might help to think less about herself and more about him. Good advice in general. Even as she reaches out to touch the deflated green balloon curiously.]

[ It gets hard to avoid the heavy, life-or-death topics when those are the stakes you've become accustomed to dealing with on a day-to-day basis. For him, for her... anyone that comes from a place like that. Even outside of that context, on the Fleet, living like that stays with you - and here, it's essentially being home for Glenn. At least as far as his awareness goes. ]

That was the idea. A community that could become a new start...

[ When she touches the balloon, Glenn falls immediately silent and sits upright at attention. A different man's voice breaks through - ]

Thank you.

[ And a gunshot, echoing. Kitty hasn't been pulled out of the room and into the memory yet, but she will be if she lingers... ]

[She instinctively phases at the gunshot, but it's hard to say if it works in this place. Not in any real way of course, but there's also no bullet ripping it's way toward her so there's little to prove it one way or the other. She doesn't let go of the balloon as she looks around for the source of the sounds.]
