Before you post your topcomment, please:
1. Check the first letter of your character's name as its written in our tags. A-M names go to the other post, and N-Z names comment here.
2. Make a note in your topcomment if anything especially triggering or graphic might show up in the Calibration. If you're not sure if something's worth noting or not, we suggest listing it anyway, just to err on the side of caution.
3. Put your character's name (it can be shortened or different from the tag, this time) in the subject of your comment. This will help visitors find you easily, and help us update the list below.
4. Post your comment! It's fine if everyone's Calibrations end up looking and reading very different from one another. As long as you're having fun and following our guidelines, you're good to go. :)
5. If you have any questions or concerns during Calibrations, you are welcome to send them towards the mod team at any time, as always.

[Ugh. Cars. Convertibles especially. Clay finds himself in the passenger seat of this car, and while it took him a bit to realize that and the fact that they're moving, now he's sulking a little bit. He hasn't been in a car for a long time, and he doesn't like being in them now.

Still, it'd be rude to just complain about it and ask the guy to stop. So, while his eye does pass over everything, he mostly focuses on the driver himself.]

So, uh, where are we going?

[Shawn taps his fingers against the steering wheel, in perfect time to the song, as he looks over at Clay.

Huh, he doesn't recognize the guy. Must be one of Eric's and Jack's friends. He'd said something about helping them drive new students around - and well, Shawn doesn't break a promise like that. So he manages a smile.]

You ask that on our last road trip before orientation? The road's all ours, man. We can go wherever we want.

[Right on cue, a green exit sign pops up on the right hand side, with four options. A) Topanga Canyon, 5 miles away B) Pennbrook University, 7 miles away C) John Adams High, 15 miles away or D) Cornelius Corner, 8 miles away.

Shawn glances at him expectantly. Although Clay doesn't know it yet, this road trip can last as long as he wants - he can pick all of these exit signs, some of them, or none at all and remain on the highway. OR Clay can start rifling through the items in Shawn's car. Shawn's in too much of a good mood to care.]

    Orientation?

[Weird. He leans on the door, elbow against the window and fingers pressed to his forehead. What orientation? Is this some kind of Atroma thing? Is he being whisked away to something completely awful and undesirable?

He almost misses the exit sign, but he does happen to catch a word or two before it completely passes his field of vision. Huh. Those don't sound like Atroma things, though it still doesn't stop him from feeling a bit apprehensive.]

    Uh... the university?

Yeah. College orientation for Pennbrook. All freshman're required to attend before classes start?

[Shawn frowns, as if just realizing something important, but he pushes it to the back of his mind.]

Stopping by school real quick? Got it.

[He moves towards the right lane, turning on his indicator - except, instead of actually getting off the highway, the road ahead fades out with the rhythmic clicking of the turn signal, and the car comes to a halt as the road and the sky disappear into a memory--]

[video version here, scenes starting at 7:54 and 10:20-ish, respectively]

[Your estranged brother Jack's decided to attend Pennbrook University, of all the universities in the world, and you can feel the blood boiling in your veins every time you stare at his dumb mug. Nevermind that you share similar features, and you technically have the same dad; this jerk and his mom bailed on Dad.

You want nothing to do with this guy and his fancy three bedroom apartment in downtown Philadelphia, but Cory's hellbent on making sure his older brother Eric rooms with Jack too. After the most awkward reunion at your favorite restaurant, you were hoping that would be the end of it.

Except he dares to show that ugly mug of his at your trailer home. Dad's so proud, like all "lookie here, I've got me a boy in college!" and it's all you can do to hold in your rage. You're not Jack. You don't have a wealthy stepdad looking out for you. If you got into college, it would be a longshot and - well, kind of a miracle in itself.

Jack even dares to say that he came here to visit YOU. Now that can't be right. Jack has shown absolutely zero interest in meeting you - why would he bother now? After what, a whole life of pretending you don't exist?

Then it comes, the big slap in the face: he offers you a room in his fancy apartment, and "if you're worried about the rent, I can make the difference."

NO. You did not ask for any kind of charity handout, and you aren't going to be rescued by some guy who shares half your DNA. Nope. You're done, and Jack can barely keep his composure even as he turns to leave - though, of course, he tells Dad stuff about how nice it was to see him.

Good, you find yourself thinking as Jack leaves. You wouldn't want to live with a complete stranger anyways.]

[It's... strange. Clay never really has feelings like this, never had a reason to feel this way. And yet he finds himself narrowing his eyes at this stranger, spitting out venomous words, feeling raw anger, annoyed, insulted. This guy comes in here, just hoping things would be okay, things would be cool between them?

No. He left a long time ago, never even bothered to call or - or anything. This is a joke, and he's not part of it, he's not getting the punchline. He just wants him out of here. And when he does, he feels a strange sense of vindication.

Good. He didn't want to live with a complete stranger anyways.]
    unfulfilledpotential: (concerned here)

[As soon as the memory fades, Shawn's leaning forward in the driver's seat, looking almost melancholic as he stares at the road ahead. They're still on the highway, with clear skies and beautiful sunny weather, but...]

It's weird how much I hated Jack back then. He waltzes in, like he's been there my whole life, but... it was hard, figuring out exactly where we stood with each other.

[He shakes his head, with a thin smile appearing on his face.] Sorry, man. I'm not trying to wander down memory lane here.

[The car slows down again: while you're not quite at Pennbrook, you're not back on the highway you started at either. While the exit sign's disappeared from the highway, there's now a points of interest sign on the right-hand side.

The glove compartment is still ajar, with CDs stashed inside, and of course, the graduation tassel and Chubbies' keychain hang off his rearview mirror. Shawn slows down a little to better look at Clay.]

You feel like exploring the road to school a little more? Or should we get back onto the highway?

    Uh - No, it's... it's fine.

[He crosses his arms and slumps forward just a bit, letting out a sigh. That was... weird. Like he had no control over his thoughts and feelings. And... it hit close to home. It was everything he thought about his dad, whom he hasn't seen since he was six. If that man ever came back into his life... he imagines he'd react much the same way as Shawn did.]

I don't think I like this road much. Can we get back on the highway?
    unfulfilledpotential: (say that again?)

    [personal profile] unfulfilledpotential 2015-10-24 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
    Sure.

[Shawn shoots him a sympathetic smile, switching the song on the radio to something more upbeat. Even though the road hasn't changed, the green exit sign pops up, and Shawn slows down so Clay can read it better:

A Topanga Canyon, 5 miles away,
    B) Pennbrook University, 7 miles away
    C) John Adams High, 15 miles away
    D) Cornelius Corner, 8 miles away

Weirdly enough, although the Pennbrook sign remains, it feels older now, as if it's been worn by age or weather.]

    Where should we go next?
