Recently, I'm afraid. Is this a safe place to conduct your training?

Nowhere is safe. [She doesn't sound angry, or bitter. It's just a bald statement of fact.] So why worry about it?

[Everywhere is equally unsafe, then? He nods, though he still wears an expression of concern.]

I'm sorry to hear that. But it seems you're used to working within those constraints?

Well yeah, you have to. Wouldn't be much point in working if it wasn't dangerous, And you're there to protect other people.

[Still, the state of things is...worrying. Except for one bright exception, which he gestures toward.]

The sunset is beautiful.

[She looks up at it.]

I remember that sunset. I don't know when it is, though. But it's important.

"Then I'm glad it's here." One beautiful, important thing quite literally bursting through the grey wreckage of the rest of the landscape. Why is it wrecked, though?

"What happened here to make all the, ah, holes?"

She looks around. Is there something wrong with it? "That's how it's always been," she says. "As long as I can remember."

[unbearablynaive]

"It doesn't need to be," he says earnestly. "You can fix it, no matter what caused the damage. The new shape may be somewhat unlike the old, but it will be better for you."

[pain_train]

"I don't understand what you mean," Wrath says, squinting at him. Is he fucking with her. "I'm not in construction. I'm a soldier."

[unbearablynaive]

"You are a soldier," he agrees, "but that does not mean you cannot be anything else."

[pain_train]

She stares at him, shoulders slumping slightly. "Why does everyone always assume that it isn't enough?" she asks quietly. "Or that it's a bad thing?"

[unbearablynaive]

Aw, Wrath. He hadn't meant to hurt her feelings. But it's a valid question, nonetheless.

"Because we hope for peace, and we do not want our friends to be without purpose."

[pain_train]

"There's always someone that needs protecting." She shrugs. "The work needs to get done."

[unbearablynaive]

"Yes." Goodness knows that's his job back in his own world. "And there will always be those who wish to harm others. However--"

And he pauses for a moment, inspired by what else he's observed here.

"Even soldiers have downtime, do you not? Perhaps you could paint a way to fill the holes."

[pain_train]

That's really confusing. Paint a way to fill the holes? This is how things are. She just kind of stares at Vision like she's not sure what he's talking about.

"...there's something wrong with the holes?"

[unbearablynaive]

Ah, so she isn't aware of why he's concerned about the holes. That makes a bit more sense, and he nods.

"Yes. In a healthy landscape, the ground and buildings would be whole - or, if damaged, there may be signs of repair. That way you would need to focus less on keeping your footing and could dedicate more attention to your drill."

[pain_train]

Well, Vision is nice, and he is her shipmate, so she trusts him. Wrath nods. "Okay, so there's something wrong with my city." That's alarming. "The holes are bad." Okay, we've established that. "What do you want me to do?"

He nods, satisfied with her line of questioning. "If you were going into battle on unsafe terrain, how would you modify your approach?"
