[His voice is soft and wounded as he replies, looking into that fire. It feels like the longest he's been near Rogue since... since the cliff.]

I... I don't know.

I keep asking, and I don't know.

Why do so many people have to hate what makes us special? Why can't we all just... get along? ...Why does anything have to break to begin with...

[There are answers for that, but they're not very good ones.]

I don't know why, Kurt. But that doesn't change how it is.

But... We're mutants! We're supposed to be special and gifted. With everything we can do, can't we just... change how things are?

[touchofrogue]

[Aww, Kurt. You sound so sad. It compels Rogue to answer with a little gentleness.]

Maybe someone strong enough an' powerful enough could. Maybe they could make it so that everyone loves everyone all the time, an' there's never any problems with anyone... never any choice. An' where would that leave us? Would anythin' we do even matter after a thing like that?

People have ta have a choice for their actions to mean something. Or else we're all just part of a machine.

...Okay. I get what you mean.

So then, what are we supposed to do with all our mistakes? Just... hide them away? [He looks back towards the trophy.]

[touchofrogue]

[Rogue eyes him.

Really?]

Ya think that's what I'm doin'?

[Does he really think the trophy is something as small as a mistake, after he held it like that? Does he really think that something on display in a mantle is hidden, for all that it had a protective glass cover that is still not replaced, for all the sense of darkness leaking out of it where it remains, broken and uncovered?]

I... I don't know! I'm just trying to figure out what just happened...

[touchofrogue]

Then why don't ya ask that instead of philosophizin'? [Though he might have at the beginning of this conversation, before everyone got distracted, well... Rogue DID get distracted.] Or if you're that desperate, go ahead. Pick it up again.

[It's a dare, almost. She doesn't think he'll do it. But his consistent undercutting of her character is really starting to tick her off. She isn't who he thinks she is. She made a wrong choice. But that is not all that she is.]

[They're both prone to distraction. It must run in the family

But now Kurt's eyes widen and he quickly shakes his head.]

N-no way! When I picked that thing up... I felt all these awful feelings... [He runs a hand through his hair anxiously.]

[touchofrogue]

Yeah, that must've sucked.

[Sarcasm engaged.

She shakes her tiny little made out of the fire head. And because he still seems to be clueless, Rogue decides to offer him a hint.]

Gee. I wonder what it would like to feel that way all the time.

[digthefuzz]

[Kurt has been internly denying it out of shock, but it's becoming harder to do so now that the fire Rogue has practically been telling him ouright. He breathes for a moment uncertainly and then breathes with a shallow gasp.]

All the time...?

[touchofrogue]

[Crossing her arms.]

When ya hurt everythin' ya touch, it has a certain psychological impact. [Her voice was very matter of fact.] So does the lack of physical contact. There have been studies on just the impact lack of physical contact has on someone in the length of a week. Imagine over a decade.

[She glanced back at the trophy, frowning.] It was gettin' better, though.

[Hence, the protection around it.]

[digthefuzz]

[He takes in her words for a while. Silently, with a deep frown and closed eyes.

Then he stands up, crosses the room and carefully reaches for the glass bell, to place over the broken trophy.

...And then he tries to look for a blanket to throw over that.]

[touchofrogue]

[When Kurt replaces the glass, the sense of darkness and cold radiating from the trophy ceases, and the room is one again more comfortable. There are blankets on both the armchair and the couch, but when he throws one over the trophy, it won't stick, just slides right back off.]

No use tryin' ta hide it, Kurt. It'll still be there. Why don't ya just go... get somethin' ta eat or something.

[digthefuzz]

[He Tried. Well, at least things feel comfortable again. And he turns back to the flame with a sheepish grin.]

Ohhh, you know the magic words!

Is there, um... a lot to eat around here? [He looks around uncertainly.]

[touchofrogue]

Over in the cupboard. [The tiny fire figure points in that direction.] It should be full. It's not like I can eat right now.

[digthefuzz]

If you say so! [He then nervously makes his way over to the cupboard and opens it up!]

[touchofrogue]

[And nothing happens!

The cupboard is stocked with delicious dried goods, and also drinks of various kinds. Have at.]

[digthefuzz]

Sweet! [He'll start snacking away at most of the selection immediately.]

[touchofrogue]

[The moment Kurt takes his first bite, his other four senses fade slightly, putting all of his focus on taste. He becomes more aware of the weight of the food in his mouth, and the sensation is pleasurable. He becomes more focused on the taste of whatever he is eating, and it is good.]

[digthefuzz]

[Kurt looks increasingly delighted as he chows down in the least dignified manner possible.]

Dude! This tastes awesome!

[touchofrogue]

Good.

[Pause a beat.] So, you wanna get of here early there are two ways - touch the mirror or play the game.

[digthefuzz]

[Through the looking glass... Kurt raises an eyebrow, intrigued.]

What kind of game are we talking here?

[He's guessing she doesn't want to just play Operation or Connect Four or Don't Wake Mutant Superterrorist Mom.]

[touchofrogue]

Checkers.

[No, seriously, checkers. There's a board set up over by the window and everything.]

[digthefuzz]

...Checkers? [He looks confused for a moment, but then he smirks confidently. Sure, why not?]

Fine, you're on! Prepare to be checked!
